The Java Update prompted (http://www.macrumors.com/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=2488) discussion about Apple's upcoming implementation on Java 1.4...
This mailing list email (http://lists.apple.com/mhonarc/java-dev/msg14085.html) from Jan 30, 2002 reveals a WWDC early release for Java 1.4:

If Apple continues to improve Java support as they did in 1.3.1, I will be a very happy man. I think that 1.3.1 showed us that Apple is committed to making their Java support better. There weren't necessarily any ground breaking improvements, but GUI response and drawing is speedier. It was a positive move.
Apple must continue down this path and provide the more current Sun offerrings of Java. 1.4 at WWDC would be outstanding.
Keep it up Apple. Help make Java competitive on the Mac platform. At a time when MS is targeting the Java market with its .Net offerring, Java needs all of the support it can get!

OSX's "advanced Java" was one of the reasons I choose to upgrade to OSX back in March of 2001. Needless to say up until the update to 1.3.1 I had been very unhappy. 1.3.1 did address most of the problems I've had with Java up until then. I'm a very pleased user. I only hope that there's continued development and that we (Mac user) don't have to wait around, for table scraps like the family dog, in the future.

By WWDC? Great! We really need 1.4! (Hopefully it means we will be able to access Hushmail from a Mac browser for once! Got the classes issue fixed I hope!)

A critical omission to java support on the mac is the java3d api. No mention has been made of the progress or prospects of adding this api, and unfortuntely java application support is incomplete without it.
It seems to me that the Mac OS X platform and java3d are a natural match, being that the OpenGL api is built into the platform and most hardware configurations include a capabable graphics accelerator.
This api provides a high-level and object oriented method to display and manipulate complex, interactive 3d scenes. For me and many others, using it has allowed application development at a rapid pace with impressive and professional results. To get more information check out:

Apple is not working very hard on Java 3d right now because they don't see it as worth the amount of effort necessary. If you want to see it, call Apple and say so.
