View Full Version : Dieting for the summer?

I know there are more MR readers than not that still have the fountain of youth bubbling inside of them.... But for us old fogies... (I am 27 ;) ) How many of you are dieting for the summer, and what are you doing?
For almost 2 months I have been doing the tired and true eat less and exercise more method. It seems to be working. I am up to 7 people who have sontaneously told me that I look like I lost weight. I am not sure how much I lost since my kids broke my scale... :(
Anyway, anybody else dieting for swimsuit weather?

I eat about 10x more red meat in the summer than the winter, does that count? ;) Seriously tho, i can't diet (it's physically impossible, i'm too damn lazy) but I have a newfound friend with a swimming pool, so I think I'll be there a couple of times a week exercising... I'd rather work out at a friend's house and look good at the gym than look like crap at the gym to look good for my friends...

I'm exercising more, and trying to eat less (can someone loan me some willpower?). The docter told me I was fat and had to lose weight. She threatened me with blood pressure pills if I didn't.

Yup, I am. I really gotta lose weight. I was totally ripped just 3 years ago and I won't even tell you how much weight I've gained since then  It's gotten to the point to where I'm almost embarrassed to meet someone that knew me back then but hasn't seen my in a while, 'cuz I know they'd be thinking: "man, he has really let himself go."
I'm just going back to what has always worked for me: low fat and high protein diet, drink lots of water, 5 or 6 workouts a week. The hardest part is getting used to the hunger. I don't care what anybody says, you have to have a calorie deficit to lose weight. Specifically, 3000 calories = 1 lb of fat. Certain things like exercise make you feel the hunger pangs less, but you have to go hungry. Ideally your calorie deficit should be about 500 calories a day so you lose about a pound a week, so it won't be a shock to your system. What I've done in the past that worked like a charm is not eat until I've been hungry for about an hour. Except at night when I go to bed hungry.
Anyway, good luck. I plan to be back to fighting shape by the end of summer.
there was a recent study looking at the high protein diets (atkins) and weight loss.
In the end, it looks like the people who lost weight ate less calories over longer periods of time. :)
so... no big surprise, but also no magic bullet either. Though, many claim you are less hungry eating a high protein diet - making it more doable.

The high protein is because otherwise 1/3 of the weight you lose would be muscle. The way to combat this is to eat high protein and work out.

I wouldn't say diet, I'll looking to get a bit less off the stomach though, maybe I can somehow transfer the fat from there into my non-ass.

...well maybe if you use a stepper or ski machine on the right setting then it will work your stomach and build the muscle in your ass bigger at the same time.....well maybe ;-)

yeah, i'm getting liposuction and stomach staples so i can look hot at the beach - just kidding. actually, i've started running again and i gave up dairy. i'm pretty skinny (150) but i've been starting to get a belly for a while. i was already a vegetarian (since '96) but starting eating pretty bad stuff lately - lots of NYC pizza, do-nuts, cheese enchiladas, bagels and cream cheese. if i ate like that into my 30s (27 now), i would definitely become huge.

I heard that step climbing creates the wrong kind of @$$ for a woman. If they really want to look good they should use stationary bikes and tread mills.
Diet.
What's that? :D
What me worry?
I've found that drinking water in the morning when you get up and right before you go to sleep help. So too does exercising before you go to sleep because then you're asleep and the fat's burning when you don't mind. You may still be hungry in the morning but eating breakfast after drinking the water makes you eat less in the morning but doesn't make you so hungry.
I'm working on losing weight. I lost about fifteen pounds in the last year without much effort. I'm working on another twenty before Summer time.

there are plenty of cute girls at the guy that use the stepper and they dont look bad not that i look or anything....I personnaly find the inmpact on a treadmill really hurts my calfs or my knee's. I can do the bike, ski, stepper or rowing machine for quite a while but five mins on the treadmill and my calfs feel like the've been streached to hell and back again.

The only thing different I'm doing with summer is more time out on my bike. I keep a decent diet all year long, exercise with weights regularly and hit the bike whenever I can usually. ;)
High protein diets are pretty decent, with a lower fat & good fat intake. Studies have proven that people who drastically reduced their fat intake lost less weight than people who had a balanced diet consisting of good fats & less calories.
now about 27 being "old"...I'll be 26 this year...and I'm in better shape than I've ever been in my life... ;)

Well I didn't really feel old until I had kids. My oldest kid is going to Kindergarten next fall! Now that my friend is old... :p
I also gained weight with my wife when she had the kids. She and I never lost it....
I don't think I will hit my total weight loss goal by the time we vacation at the beach this year, but I think I already weigh less than I did when we went last year.
For my diet I have switched to smaller portions and I eat slowly. I have cut out foods that I can live without that are high in calories. (like fried foods.) I have not cut out sweets... Cuz I can't live without them.. :D But I do moderate how much I eat of the sweets. I also introduced fruits into my diet... I like them and they are better for you than a candy bar....
I also cut out (Pick your native word.. Soda, Pop, Coke) and replaced it with diet coke when I need a caffine fix....
My exercize routine is not orgainzed at all, but it at least gets me moving. I jog, do situps, pull-ups, and move around a few light weights.
I bascially introduced one change at a time and stuck with it until it became routine. Then I added a new one. I am trying to make this permament.

I find i' prefere a beef sarnie or a pork pie or the like over chocolate or sweets but then i guess i must be weird....guess they are better for you than sweet stuff though. I heard almonds are suppose to be very good for you if you want to tone up and not put weight on, along with water, salmon, milk, yogurt with fruit and pasta...not all together though.....

It seems that u are doing it right. Too many people dive in headfirst into new diets or exercise, end up burning out too soon, then quit. Things take time, and exercise takes time to build up and really see the benefits. I've been working out on & off for about 10 years, but only in the past couple have I really pushed myself to keep it up consistently (and I am seeing results).
The less caloric intake is key, along with not overstuffing yourself. It's amazing to consider our stomachs take 20 mins, on average, to tell our brains we're full...and usually by the time we feel it, we've been eating so fast we're really stuffed. More small, healthier meals more often is an excellent way to boost your metabolism. Still stay within your recommended caloric intake, but spread it out over a longer period of time and your body will continually be working to process food, thus making your metabolism work harder.

For those of you considering high protein diets like the Atkins', please realize that they have the potential to be injurious to your health (the liver particularly). No one totally understands the body's metabolism but a lot of these non-traditional diets seem to have too many well-informed critics. In my opinion, the best way to diet is through a lifestyle change. Many don't like to hear it, but exercise is the closest thing to a health magic bullet. That and eating healthy foods and maintaining a reasonable caloric intake.
Best of luck to all of you.

A few months ago I posted a repy advocating a one meal a day as a good diet strategy. People dismissed it as being stupid and insane. Well, more and more studies are coming out saying that eating less can be mentally and physically benificial. Just this past few days, msnbc.com reported two studies that reaffirmed what I knew and believe.
I'll again advocate one meal per day diet plan.
Pros: it saves you money and it gives your digestive system a break. When your blood sugar level is low, your body is forced to burn excess fat. Fewer bowel movements!
Eat whatever you want for this one meal, but I suggest quality over quantity which may not save you much money.
If you don't like to exercise and work at a desk, I suggest eating one meal every other day. Trust me, you won't die. There are literally millions of people in the world that consume much less food than this and they are living albeit not at a desirable level.

Dieting always seems to imply eating less and exercising to lose weight for a period of time. The weight gets put on again and so the cycle starts all over.why just "diet" for the summer? It would be far more beneficial to eat healthier foods and exercise properly.
Also its important to organise your meals so that you give your pancreas a break.I read somewhere its better to eat complex carbohydrates in the morning because they take time to get broken down and give your pancreas a break from producing insulin and glucagon all of the time.
My plan in the summer is to engeage in alot of cardio work outs cos i ve been kinda neglecting it for the past few months. Also im aiming to achieve more tone all over.Im not aiming to get bulk muscle cos that wont help my climbing instead im aiming to reduce my body fat %

Metabolizing food puts a lot of strain on the body, so eating less is indeed healthier. But eating one meal a day is not a good idea. The best way to eat is "grazing" - just eat a little bit of food every 3 hours or so. Whatever your body can't use within 3 hours it will store as fat, so you end up putting more strain on your body by having to store fat and then burn it off again, which is what you were trying to avoid in the first place...

eating more times burns more. eating less time allows your digestive to rest and you feel better probably after getting used to it. but you burn less. if you eat many small (small, i won't call them a meal in american terms but not snack = crap either) a day, you keep burning and burn easier. so like instead of having one 700 kcal meal a day you'll burn more eating 1200 kcal divided to 6 200 kcal mini meals. even eating many times should be eating not much during the day, that'll burn more. it'll keep also your brain working better.
i can do days without eating at all, i don't feel hunger, but that won't burn the right way. it'll burn the muscles, and when you have burned them you'll have just the fat left (even if you do sports), and once you eat you'll get easier just the fat back. besides i notice too often huge energy drops, the brain just quits working after there is no sugar left (in liver). so just to think i force myself to eat sometimes.

Yes, 6 small meals a day are much better than 3. Will make it easier for the body to digest! The evening meal should be the smaller meal, because your activity is decreasing at that point. What the body doesn't need it will store as fat! ;)

Having gone on the Atkins diet a bunch of times, here is my take on it: You lose a lot of weight really fast. You can eat as much of the allowed foods as you want (which gets smaller, because you get tired of meat all the time). Having said that, You also gain weight really fast once you go off it. I have probably gained and lost 100 lbs over the last 2 years on this diet. Not healthy. I know.
I find this other diet I was on (and kind of currently on) to be a really good idea. You just eat when you feel the physical sensation of hunger, and only enough to kill that hunger pain. You can eat whatever you want, but you can only eat when you are physically hungry. It works pretty well. I have adapted it so I basically only eat once every one or two days. I know that is not healthy either, and even combined with my excersize and physically active job, i will still lose muscle, but I just have to do it. I really want to lose 20 or so lbs. by June 15th. I know that is unrealistic and I will probably fall off the wagon and gain weight before then, but I really want to do this. I am 20 years old, 5' 7" and about 175 lbs. I am not really all that fat, except in the middle (gut, butt, ect...). I kind of have a homer simpson body, and it is not good. I wish I could just lose fat there, but the only way to spot reduce is to get liposuction, and that is just too expensive and too drastic for me. I dunno. I have been fighting this ever since I was like 12, but I have never gotten into shape. I know that if I can just get down to a good weight, I will be able to stay there and keep it off, and excersise to get into good shape, but I haven't been in shape ever as far as I can remember.
The problem is that I really like to eat way too much and I live near chicago and there is just too much good food around here, and we have the WORST kind of good food. Stuffed Chicago style pizza ( giordanos...), chicago dogs (portillos...mmm), Italian Beef (buona beef is sooo good.) These are all like the worst food. That combined with my lust toward white castle and arbys, and the occasional fling with steak and shake and mcdonalds, I am a mess. Oh, did I mention my mom is like the best cook? I am trapped by all this delicious, nasty, fat food. Arrg....
I am going to stop typing now.

Diabetics follow a calorie diet to keep their disease under control. Those wanting to loose weight watch their calories. Physicians still put patients on a certain caloric diet to contol numerous diseases!

Mangia!
For some reason this reminded me of the indescribably wacky restaurant La Mela in Little Italy. There is no menu, they just start bringing you food and you have to turn it down if you don't want it. And one time my friend was on a date there and I guess he was eating too slow, and the waiter came up to him and said: "You got-ta mouth-a, you got-ta use-a it!", grabbed my friend's fork, and proceeded to shovel tomato into my friend's mouth. Those wacky people!

I don't even remember which magazine it was now...likely Men's Health from a couple months ago. It factored in your weight, how much exercise u maintain, and did some math to come to it basically.
I'm trying to find it to post a link... ;)

It took me two months, but I am trying to make more of a lifestyle change. I still eat junk, but far less of it. I also started exercising. I jogged a mile and a half today when I used to not be able to make a quarter mile. (And then I walked 3 more miles.... :))

Uber, who doesn't? ;) You post it all of the time. :D
I was just concerned since you have also posted your low weight several times. I just wanted to make sure that your posts were just bragging on your low weight, and not a cry for help. My Sister-in-law, who is in highschool, has friends with eating disorders. They are very dangerous and more common that we would like to believe. Since I have never seen you, I asked ibookin. :D

It's definitely a non-typical Italian restaurant, even by Little Italy standards (which is just a big tourist trap now, the Italian community mostly moved out of there decades ago). It's just...unique. But hey, it's worked for them. Most people go there not for the food but for the wackyness.

Hey, it's just what I read. All three were in the 2800-2900 range, as I recall. Must be all that Guiness. I'm not sure what the story is in Greece. I've been to Greece and the people definitely didn't seem fat there, so maybe it was a flawed survey.

btw, the eating disorders aren't common ONLY in US but their incidence / percentage in the population is about the same in all the world.. with probably just more pressure of the environment to look 'acceptable' etc on (any of the) western countries. and about 10 % of all people suffering them, are males, probably even more ..

Well, I see ... below some quotes from her on this and the other thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21201).
"you guys are so freaking NORMAL!!!!!
i'm like 5'7" and i only weigh like 90 pounds...okay okay i'm a superskinny girl geek"
"my mom sayz i'm just like steve jobs...a vegetarian that doesn't eat anythin"
" Ummm that's like near impossible every week i'm losing at least 2 pounds or so and i did swim and play football and or basketball but not anymore [...] i'm all skin and bones!!!!!"
"**'s trying to force me to eat but i'm trying not to...i'm not hungry...
he also yelled at me because when i came back from a three day snowboarding trip i was totally different..."
"I'm not a plump person, i'm so skinny that i'm starting to look more and more like a skeleton[...] my doctor was freaked out by my weight...it was closer to 80, not 90 and he's like omfg you just gotta try and eat more"
"i just can't eat. i would love to but i don't feel hungry."
"i stopped eating a lot to the point where my mom tries to force me to eat every single day..."
i think those comments pretty well say it. i don't mean to piss you off über but those thoughts aren't probably exactly as a westerner 14 y old girl is supposed to think.

(Sorry to gang up on you Uber, I am sure you get enough of that at your house. (Based on what you have shared... ))
By the way, I don't like having boobs either... But I am a guy. ;) I am hoping that with this exercise I will at least drop a cup... :D
jelloshotsrule
May 7, 2003, 12:26 PM
as a vegetarian (blah blah), let me just say that it takes more eating to get the right stuff. that is, you get protein from pretty much everything you eat, just not much... sure, beans, rice, peanut butter and soy/tofu are all pretty high in it, but it's not meat. plus, you generally eat meat with each meal. not every meal for a veggie involves the various things i mentioned, so you need to eat more to get the protein (though most people do eat more than they need of it)
that said, protein is not the only thing you need of course. calcium is big. even for non vegans, the calcium in milk has been found out to be not all that usable... the body can only use a pretty small % of it. so even if you get your 100% daily requirement, you really are only getting a % of that because your body can't process it all. this is why coral calcium (which the body can more easily process) is getting bigger... personally, i'd love to get on a coral calcium thing, but the gel caps are well, gelatin, which kinda defeats the purpose for me. ha. once the powder goes down in price and i have $ i may get some.
as for ubergeek... she's 14? i thought she was dating ibookin, who apparently is in college? i'm confused....
but 80 pounds isn't healthy given the comments above. there is a mental connection to being hungry, so it's not just physical. if you really really don't want to be hungry, you won't be (at least, not as easily/often)
ps. sorry for the tangent. good mood. :)

I'm very certain I could do vegetarian quite easily; I would feel the hardest part would likely be finidng foods that were 100% meat-free. I know I already like the vegetarian foods that can be bought in grocery stores & specialty stores.

i didn't like vegetables either. you learn to like new things... i started out by not eating meat.. but eating fish. now i don't eat fish, and when i can, i don't eat dairy... it all gets easier. i mean, think about it one meal at a time and it's simple. that said, you need to actually have the motivation. you couldn't do it, "just to do it"
eye- yeah, there are some great foods that are nearly always vegetarian. or have veg options... for instance, indian, thai, and chinese places often have a tofu substitute option, or just dishes with tofu. or at least dishes without meat.
the hard things to avoid for "vegetarians" are gelatin and beef broth and that kind of stuff... the "sneakier" stuff. some people don't even bother (ie, my girlfriend. ha) she'll eat a marshmallow or jello with gelatin in it... but hey, to each their own.
now, trying to avoid all dairy is nuts, especially when eating out. that's why i do it when i can, but i don't put people out of their way or if i'm eating at a restaurant, i just get whatever they have that seems like the best option. if it's dairy free, then great. if not, i don't fret. ;)

Yeah, it's definitely easy to get tofu dishes at ethnic places. One of my clients is a kosher restaurant; which means they do have meats, but no dairy. It's easy to get dairy free desserts that way at least.
I think the bottom line is most people are educated enough in the sense that they think "vegetarian" means just eating plants & rice. There are some vegetarian substitutes that I'd swear weren't. ;)

Uh? I was grown as catholic too. so? I haven't eaten meat since 1989 or so ..
In a bar (some weeks ago) there was a vetyperoxide-brained (=blonde) waitress that though chicken was a vegetable. so she brang.. err... those vegetable quesadillas, and once i figured out it had chicken, i could not help going to vomit it all. i won't go back to that place again.
Oh, i remember some restaurants in finland had nothing as vege menus ... so, i tried to order the vegetarian parts of 2 different plates. well - the finns seemed to consider sausages as vegetable, so as well that felt quite unedible...

i freak out when i find even gelatine .. like in candies, medicines, whatever. so.. vege, allergic to about everything...
i find it more hard to avoid onions than finding meat-free stuff. i'm just freaking allergic to onions. at least i can cook so i can avoid it.
so no meat (or chickens etc), no fried stuff, no creamy stuff, no gelatine, no onions.. and no wheat. (=no bread or pastas either). occasionally some fish though... i feel like the nightmare of all those cooking addicted people, they just freak out.. ;)

Heh, be careful at Chinese restaurants. Most real chinese restaurants don't understand the concept of "vegetarian", they think you can still eat white meat. Ask for the "Buddhist" menu and then they'll actually understand what you mean :)

This is wierd because I haven't been doing too much physical labor or anything, just walking my fat poodle up and down the street daily for a few weeks, but that's not exactly a very tiring task, I haven't weighed myself in awhile though so I thought I'd lust give it a shot for the hell of it and wow.
No wonder all my pants have been sagging as of late...
Sweet!!
Just yesterday I noticed that I could tighten my belt one more notch. So that's one inch down and, uh, several more to go...

You are going to starve yourself to death!
I am really stressed about money right now, so I have comforted myself with food the last few days. Today I had.
2 soft tacos from Taco Bell (http://www.tacobell.com)
1 chicken grilled stuffed burrito
1 diet pepsi
1 coke
1 vanilla coke
1 chocolate ice cream thingy
half of a Digiorno Pizza
3 glasses of milk
:(
When I am dieting right I eat
Half of a wrap sandwich from Roly Poly (http://www.rolypolyusa.com) (On wheat)
1 sun riser combo from Krystal (http://www.krystal.com)
8 oz of Orange juice
and a light dinner (Whatever the wife is cookin)
2 cups of milk. (it does a body good. ;))
(And I exercise)

I recently had a series of surgeries done for a sleeping disorder (a variant of apnea) which entailed deviated septum correction, tonsillectomy, adenoid removal, turbinate removal and a uvulectomy (sp?)
As such, I was on the italian ice and beef broth diet. I lost 25 pounds over two weeks (sometimes I would just ditch "eating" completely and subsist on iced tea) but have since then gained five or six back.
but it was JUST the start that I needed. Plus, since not being able to eat for that period, my appetite seems to have changed. Whereas before I could go to this mexican joint and eat and eat, now i can BARELY finish the meal.
So hopefully that, combined with a half hour of treadmilling, half hour of rollerblading and my three daily walks/cigarette breaks will help me whittle down the excess even more. :D
So yea. I think the commentary about "life changes" is completely spot on.

My daily diet consists of:
Breakfast: bagel, yogurt, and coffee
Lunch: Sandwich (usually turkey or tuna) with a side of carrots. Usually I eat 1/2 the sandwich and eat the rest a couple hours later
Dinner: pre-workout I drink a Ripped Force (usu. fruit punch flavor, tastes good) and then post-workout I have 2 Balance bars. Man, those balance bars are yummy.

Well at least I hope you had something to eat with your bf...
You should make sure you're getting enough nutrition. I like eating Balance Bars - only 210 calories and it's like eating a yummy multivitamin. At least make sure you're getting enough iron and calcium :)

i ate more sunday ... brunch: an americano (no sugar) and strawberries .. later diet code reds, in the evening some of grilled seafood combo, 1 glass of wine, salad with lemon and vinegar as only dressings ... and i stayed awake till 5 am cos my bones were hurting.
i know i should eat at least 1200 kcals a day to burn something .. at least i'm not alone, so i (can and do) skip lunch but i'm normally forced to have some dinner even when i say i ate already. if i was alone i'd skip dinner as well.

Thank you eyelikeart, your concerns are valid. Medically it is reccomended that you only loose 1 - 2 pounds per week. Breakfast is a very important meal. It would be better to eat more at lunch, then a light dinner. It's after dinner that activity slow down, so any nutrition that is not used will be converted to fat. Very important to eat a balanced diet! This way you would be able to maintain weigth loss long term! ;)

It's true though, I think there's a serious lack of education when it comes to health & dieting in this country. I put heavy blame on the fast food industry, combined with all of the crap that's marketed to children, and also the lack of knowledge in many homes. I understand there's a huge problem in terms of convenience & time for many parents to maintain healthy diets for their children, but damn. It's no wonder why there's so many people who are unhappy with their bodies; society paints this false picture of what "beauty" really is, and it leaves most people questioning themselves. :(

Fast food is definitely a major problem. With the possible except of Einstein's bagels, and MAYBE some wendy's when i'm, um.... smoked, i think all fast food is crap.
I know people who eat cereal for breakfast (nice start) and then have McDonald's for lunch and taco bell for dinner. These cats are professionals who make decent salaries. It's not college anymore!
People i've worked with did this. I would go to this rockin' greek restaurant. Or have Pan Asian or Thai food for lunch. Or, shudder, walk around town with my digital and maybe have a small order of some sort of noodles.
And cats wonder why heart disease, etc run rampant.

ick...that is pretty sad. :(
I eat a small breakfast usually, bagel & coffee with a mix of some fresh fruit. I have a decent lunch, a sandwich with some lean met & maybe a mix of veggies along with it. Dinner is along the same lines as lunch, nothing too heavy though. I also keep protein bars & granola bars with me for snacking between meals. I feel like I eat all throughout the day, but can barely keep weight on when I gain it. I gained 10lbs last year, and ended up slowly losing it all over the course of the past 7 months.
I don't eat any fast food, save for Subway. I don't usually eat fried either, and am not a terribly bad sweets person either. I do have a terrible jones for chocolate though, and I'm definitely down with all ethnic foods. I'm also a wine & coffee lover, and I need my diet cokes everyday. ;)

I remember your obsession with the protein and granola bars from the FLUX visit. Hehe.
I also remember that big-a$$ bottle of jog wine... may she rest is peace.
I generally do special K for breakfast and on weekends i'll do waffles with cream and strawberries with a glass of wine.
For lunch, tuna on top of salad. Or Some sort of sammich on a bagel.
Dinner is usually heavier. The drinking was my downfall......

Movie stars, models, magazines, etc. don't help either by airbrushing, using special lighting, makeup and such. This was an article done a few months ago that I think everyone should see. I'm sure that just about everyone here has seen the movie True Lies. Well, Jamie Lee Curtis did True Thighs...to show what a difference 'touching up' of photos, etc. can make. Here's the link...
True Thighs (http://ww4.lhj.com/lhj/story.jhtml?storyid=/templatedata/lhj/story/data/jamieleecurtistruethighs_08212002.xml)
On another note...a diet will almost never succeed...a lifestyle change will. And it's been proven over and over again, that rapid weight loss leads to even more rapid weight gain, and to the excess of the loss. In other words, if you quickly lose 20 pounds, you'll very likely gain back 30 pounds in less time then it took to lose the 20. Take it slowly, make small changes to your meals at first (i.e.-drinking lowfat milk rather then whole, ordering baked or broiled chicken rather then fried, etc.) and also, exercise. Exercise is the key to any healthy lifestyle. A person with a sedentary lifestyle can benefit greatly from even a brisk, 5 minute walk a day. :)

scem0, I thought you last night while listening to the "David Letterman Show." The guests on his show were two Apache helicopter pilots captured in Iraq last month. They were held by the Iraqis for 21 days, they described their ordeal. Very brave soldiers, men to be proud of as Americans. David Williams & Ronald young, Jr. both Chief Warrent Officers in the Army.
David had each of them tell something about themselves. Ronald said that he grew up in Georgia. Attended a Junior College for two years. Here is the part for you scem0. Ronald said, "I got tired of eating Ramen Noodles, so I joined the Army." :p

So, yeah, I've found that for maintaining my weight, running 5 miles every other day and not eating too many fatty things (or too much food altogether) works for me.

Balance Bars are quite tastey, but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who isn't very active; that's quite a lot of calories to add to anyone's diet who is fairly sedentary.
Bananas are a very good supplement to a diet, and very healthy for u as well. Honestly, fresh fruit is a better alternative to most individuals whose bodies do not need all those extra nutrients. ;)

That Peanut Butter flavor tastes like Reeses peanut butter filling. Caramel Nut Blast tastes pretty much like a Snickers. Lemon Meringue is quite tasty too.

Well, I'm using Balance bars as a meal replacement which means they're quite low in calories (only 210 calories each). My daily routine consists of going to the gym after work, and drinking a Ripped Force fruit punch flavor (100 calories) right before my workout. Then immediately after my workout I scarf down 2 Balance bars (420 calories total), and I don't eat or drink anything besides water for the rest of the day.
It really works, dude. The fat is just melting away. I'm starting to sculpt some pecs again out from underneath my layer of man-boob :D

I hope you've read up on what you are drinking before you started drinking it. Ripped force has a good bit of ephedrine in it. That alone causes an elevated heart rate...combine that with a workout that raises your heart rate even more and you could be headed for trouble. I used to take Ripped Fuel (even though I'm a girl and it is used for body building, I took 1/6 of the dose to aid in weight loss) and although it does help tremendously, I found out while my father was in the hospital after he had a heart angiogram that ephedrine can be deadly to anyone, especially those who have a family history of heart problems. So even though excess weight is bad for your heart and general health, ephedrine is even worse. I don't mean to sound preachy, just offering a bit of advice. :)

But yeah, I read the contents. Ripped Force has an astounding amount of caffeine, too. To be honest I usually don't push myself that hard on the aerobic workout. Usually keep my heart rate around 140, which is quite moderate. Plus I was fortunate to inherit a fantastic constitution from my mother and her father. My grandpa worked on his farm 'til he was past 80 (he's still kicking at 91). And we're not talking just sitting on a tractor. We're talking climbing up and down tropical jungle hills, with a machete as his primary agricultural tool.

See, I know exactly how you feel. Weight gain, even in a small amount, can make one feel down and angry. Of course, the part of myself that feels down and angry is not the same part of myself that works to lose the weight. Therefore, the more sad and angry I get, the less I work out. You just need to whip that whiner in you into shape, get on a treadmill, and sooner or later, that pesky whiner will have nothing to whine about.
Also, I'm just assuming you were trying to be overly dramatic with the wording of your post, but if you're seriously considering not existing, I'd advise against it. Talk to people, do things. It's hard for me to sum it all up in a few sentences since it took me about three (or maybe four) years to go from being suicidal to being (for the most part) totally content with every aspect of my life -- but hey, it's possible, it just takes lots of work and personal growth.
Yup :)

the worst in that trying to get into shape (and feeling comfortable) is when everyone else wants you fat(ter). i feel uncomfortable now, and as always, the less i weight, the more i am comfortable with my body (and everyone else freaks out). i want _no_ curves at all in my body.

Wozu?
won't you always have some measure of curves, even when you're nothing but skin and bones? that's no meter for health. maybe those people who you think want you fat really just want you healthy. if you look anything like those pictures you posted, you certainly don't seem to need to be losing much any weight.

When I said I got off my diet for a couple of weeks and I gained s few pounds, apparently I weighed at a bad time or something.
According to my newest readings I have dropped down 15 pounds! That gives me an average of 5 pounds a month! I am pleased with these numbers. I am really excited that I feel like I am not dieting and I am still managing to loose weight. Apparently the lifestyle changes that I still maintain are sufficient for weight loss. (Diet cokes only, stop eating when you are full, don't be afraid to throw away food. Candy only in moderation. Food with nutritional value first....)
I also eat smaller portions and I don't overload my plate.
I just hope this is a permanent change since I still want to lose 30 more pounds. (but I would be happy with 20 more.)

I'm sure that just about everyone here has seen the movie True Lies. Well, Jamie Lee Curtis did True Thighs...to show what a difference 'touching up' of photos, etc. can make. Here's the link...
True Thighs (http://ww4.lhj.com/lhj/story.jhtml?storyid=/templatedata/lhj/story/data/jamieleecurtistruethighs_08212002.xml)
wow. thanks for that link. it is so hard to see that "ideal" body in movies/tv and magazines and not feel pressured to try and emulate that. if you're not like 110 lbs you're chunky.
i caught part of a show the other day, this guy was checking out a girl and said, "yeah, she's alright, but a bit too chunky." seriously, this girl was not fat by any means. she could probably have stood to gain a couple of pounds. sick.
anyway, i'm in the midst of the 'lifestyle change.' cutting out any fast food really really helped. i'm glad that most places have salads now...except they trick you by adding bacon, high fat dressing, cheese...so i just go the plain salad route. just cutting out fast food has made a tremendous difference - and before you start in with the 'well that's pretty obvious' stuff...realize that it's harder than you think if you've gotten used to it. and jeesh some of that greasy crap actually tastes good.
right now i'm working out when to eat. i eat only when hungry, except late at night before i go to bed. i don't starve myself...i eat about 6 times a day, but my snacks are fruits or vegetables. if i get a little hungry before dinner time, i just have some carrots which i keep fully stocked.
it's all about baby steps, like someone else mentioned. if you do one major thing at a time and get used to it, you just don't notice it as much. at first i tried to get gung-ho about it, and failed miserably. then after rethinking my plan, i started simple...one day at a time. almost like the 12 steps. "i am not going to have fast food today." "i am not going to drink pop today." it has worked wonders. i can't promise that tomorrow i won't go to wendy's, but today i don't want to.

I'm on abit of a stricty at the mo...
2 weeks ago after a particularly heavy night involving consuming my own body weight in cider and a burger from Tony's, I decided that desperate times call for desperate measures...
So for the last 2 weeks I've been on a serious cut back.. now I don't eat alot of chocolate, never have so that wasn't a prob cutting that out!
But my real tight fitting t-shirt nemesis are crisps (potato chips) love em'... so I've totally cut them out... Also cut back on the beer, only had 2 bottles in the last 2.5 weeks....
No added salt either.
My main diet now consists of...
2 bananas a day
5 pints of water a day
2-3 pints of Skimmed milk a day
Vegetables (no potatos though)
White meat, either chicken or turkey
White rice
Orange or apple juice
Scrambled egg's
Cut out all the junk food, completely... no exceptions, I don't have a sweet tooth so stopping the sweets was easy too!
I have no idea how much I weigh, and I have no idea how much I've lost, and I have no real idea about how much I want to lose... and I'm happy with that! :)

I've been ignoring the cries for attention by specific members in this thread, but I cannot any longer.
If support is what u seek, then this is not the place to come to. It's gone from overweight & slightly tubby geeks from talking about shedding a few pounds for summertime to nearly every other post being containing some sort of shock value.
I'll get flamed or looked upon as insensitive for this, but I'm willing to take that risk.

Hopfully from what has been posted in this thread might be helpful. It might cause them to realize that they have a problem. That is all anybody can really do is to suggest that they seek help. It's really up to the person to seek help. Hopefully someone close to them, a person that actually can see their situation will take the initiative to push harder for that person's health!

May I ask what is A&F? Many young ladies still have "baby fat," and the growth in height can in many instances can eleviate that problem. I hope that you won't take any offense. he he...well yeah ;)
As for the bars, I tend to keep them handy since I get hunger attacks throughout the day. A lot of those bars contain a lot of good things in them, but can also be high in calories if u are adding them to your diet. I usually go for high protein & lower carb/sugar balances. Another thing to look for is the saturated fat content in them.

1. do you play any sports for which you get a physical? if you're unhealthily overweight, your doctor should tell you...
2. having been kinda tubby since like 4th grade, i can say that kids can be mean, and dumb. but that's it, it's all dumb. if it's not at an unhealthy level, don't worry about what those kids say.
i would just recommend doing the usual things to diet without actually dieting. just a simple change to eating that doesn't really affect you much, except that you should lose a little weight.
don't eat right before you sleep
stop when you're full (even when it's really really good)
try to minimize the mcdonalds stuff.
drink lots of water

so true. i've lost 12 pounds just by following those simple methods and getting moderate exercise. cut the fast food, don't eat late at night...cut the junk food...wait...just ditto everything jello said.
it really is a life change - and it takes a long time. quick fixes don't work.

Yucky... Banana Republic is über-dorky (no offense at all meant to you, eye ;) ). A&F has a somewhat cute look to it, but overall, that's dorky too. I think I have a couple pairs of A&F pants, simply because they looked neat and weren't as high in price. I usually prefer DKNY and Armani Exchange - quite stylin' stuff  -- but if I have to go preppy (and hey, sometimes the mood stikes me and I MUST) I'll go for Ralph Lauren.
Oh yeah, and to keep on-topic: I've gained weight from eating big hamburgers for the past three days. Time for me to hit the treadmill and get back down to my precious 125!

I like American Eagle's simpler clothing, not the **** that says , daves's fried catfish ont he back, you know the variety, I like a shirt that has a simply graphic of the company name on the first stretched across the front, and any non-subjective image on the back. Those are my favorite shirts. I am not afraid of non-name brands either, just today I got a cool shirt from target and one of those like open shirts, its dark blue, its coo. Both of course go with my American Eagle clothes I also got today :D
