The more times I read the first post, the more confused I get. Sounds like he's selling.

Why would you want one anyway? For a couple hundred, you could get a used Macbook.

Seems pretty clear to me he is looking to buy one.

This thread is giving me a headache.

Refurb Macbooks start at $850 at the Apple Store. So enough of the "couple hundred $5 bills" business. It's probably not in the buyer's price-range if they're shopping for a three-year-old iBook G4/800.

Now, then. Did they even make the iBook G4/800 with a CD drive (not combo)? I'm pretty sure my combo drive (I have onesuch) was standard. Maybe it was the edu-only low-end model?

Depending on whether you're the buyer or the seller, and whether the sale is front-ended through eBay or is direct, I would say that the rough price range for a computer like that is between $300 and $550 with the most likely sale price being around $400....

Ok, let me explain a bit...sorry I was in a hurry this morning when I posted.
I work for a public school, and we use PC's. We consolidated with a smaller school who had some iBooks. We are not going to use them, so I asked if I could buy one, but I don't know how much it is worth. If it's only worth a couple hundred I thought it might be nice to have around the house.
It must be one of those low end edu buys someone mentioned because it does not have a combo drive, only a cd rom.
It has a 30gb hdd.
Thanks!

If this is a school lease PC that has been used by school staff and/or students without being refurbished, I wouldn't pay more than $200-300 for it... the numbers I had posted above had been more like assuming a single private owner making personal use of it.

agreed, no more than $300. Those school-owned 'books get used pretty hard.

Would they consider just giving it to you, seeing as how you're a valued employee and these are just going to sit there? ;)

Hi Razorhog, I'm selling a 12" iBook on eBay. I listed it about 10 minutes ago before I read your post. Don't know what your price range is but here it is in case you're interested... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330062294070

Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I've got a G3, still for sale. It's not a G4, I know, but the specs are about as good as they get for the G3's.

I agree with the earlier post. Offer them $250-$300 stating it's heavy use, relatively low RAM, and lack of a CDRW/DVD (a $70 "value" on ebay, you can get higher prices to quote them at OWC). Once you buy the rig, shop the forums for much, much better deals on the upgrade parts.

The CD/DVD upgrade is only if you've opened up a laptop before or have good mechanical skills. The RAM upgrade is easy, if you can still find this kind of RAM at a good price. I could see living without the better optical drive but I'd def recommend getting the RAM up to 640 (the max possible on that iBook, I think - there are conflicting reports as to whether these iBooks can actually take 1GB modules that get them to 1.125 ... the official limit is to add 512 and get to 640).

i do know that the g3 ram maxed at 640, as they never made a 1 gig pc133 chip. im not sure if this is the newer standard, but if it is you can get it up to a 1.25 or 1.125

The Rev A iBook G4 (which is what that 800 MHz G4 is) had 128 onboard and one slot for a PC2100 SO-DIMM... there are 1 GB modules (http://dealnews.com/memory/prices/systems/Apple-i-Book-G4-PC2100-PC2100-DDR-SO-DIMMs/30635/1GB.html) made that work with this slot but only a few reports of people using them in this notebook. I'm kind of tempted to find one and try it out, though. :) It isn't until later that iBooks came with 256MB onboard and the max RAM became 1.25GB. For the 800MHz model it's definitely 1x 128 (soldered) + 1x SO-DIMM slot

Now that sounds like the best deal! :) Doubt it will happen though...
This thing has never been touched by student hands. When I opened it, it was brand new and this was only a few months ago. It has been sitting there not being used for a long time. I think I'll offer $100 and see what happens.
