I'm in Australia too, and I got 746.6. But all my stuff is going through a network, so I guess that is slowing it down a bit.

mac15, are you with Optus or Telstra? Cuz if you're with Telstra I'll laugh at you... :)

Considering how I have seen much faster downloads then that site provided, I am going to say that for the Northeast US it isn't very accurate. I have downloaded at up to 1.5Mb/second, but the site has to be able to push that much data, and not be bogged down with tons of traffic.

I might try it again later, but doubt it. The only time I have seen anything faster has been at work where we have 3 T1 lines to the outside. I downloaded a file one day where pretty much everyone else was gone for the day and it went into negative numbers (after passing 2.5MB/second). It went too fast for the browser to understand (hence the negative number).

I'm actually calling my ISP techies to find out why the test numbers I got were so damned low. Considering how so many other people are getting good numbers there has to be something up with my connection here.

All say "aye" who are in favor of dial-up being completely eradicated from the world!
Broadband needs to become the new standard. Period.

Now before people flame me to death about lack of infrastructure, prohibitive costs, etc., I'm saying that the effort needs to be made to change these things. Just like telephone service has become a standard in everyday life, broadband needs to do likewise. Where cable and dsl are not possible, satellite is picking up the slack. And as new technology, like data over powerlines becomes possible, everyone with power will be able to get broadband. Let's wish with all our might to get this done.

Apparently, from what I am seeing, Road Runner is kicking a respectable amount of rump. On the Bandwidth place, and on the 2wire tests, I got in the low 2's. Considering Sunday evening seems to be one of the busier times on the internet (yes, Virginia, there is a reason all those eBay auctions end on Sunday evening, that's when the most people are on to drive the prices up at close) that seems pretty cool. I'll test the Comcast we have at work tomorrow and see if it stacks up.

Well, I got a hold of my ISP techies last night. The guy on the other end of the phone even knew about OS X (imagine that). After running some tests, it was determined that the problem is not at my end (or with my home network :D) but somewhere once I connect to their network. It seems that once I connect to their net, the connection goes senile.

The issue has been escalated to other techs within the ISP. I might be contacted by them at home, but then again, they might just fix it without contacting me.

My speeds are so low that I don't want to post them. Lets just say, they are below 1/4th of what they are supposed to be.

I probably wouldn't have thought too much of this, if it wasn't for this thread and the testing. I am now testing it at least a couple of times a day until it is where it should be. Once that happens, I intend to test it about once a week, just to make sure the speed doesn't drop on me.

Peace

Yes you can, press the print screen key, and then either go into clipboard viewer and save the file, or open up any application that accepts images, paint/word etc... and press the paste command (Cntrl V). Basically the PRNT SCRN key copies what's on the screen so you can paste it anywhere, also you can just copy select windows etc... if you fool around with holding Cnrtl Shift PRNT SCRN all at the same time. Mac's Rule PC's Suck, see how complex it is to get such a simple thing done?

A miserable 4.8Kbps. My ISP launched broadband internet access a few months ago, the dial up service has become so unreliable I'm thinking of getting their cable modem package instead.

Is a cable modem worth getting ? I mean, I know for speed reasons it will be, plus it's only another £3 a month more than my dial up service and second line rental.

I'm concerned that using something that connects to the internet with ethernet, It's going to effect system performance while I'm connected. I sometimes use protools LE with an open internet connection and it hardly effects performance, judging by how slow classic OS is when you're connected to a network and transfering files I'm concerned that a cable modem could have the same effect meaning I can either be online or making music, not both at the same time as I do now.

I got a call this evening from my phone company (Verizon) asking me to check my connection speed since they had done some repairs. I went online (used my desktop which is wired to the router then online) and got good speeds once again. I am now seeing between 1200kbps and 1600kbps downstream. Once in a great while (maybe one in ten tests) dips below the 1200 mark, but most fall above 1400... FINALLY I have real DSL speed...

One interesting thing though, when I go through the airport card, I seem to drop about 300kbps or so in speed. I have more then enough ethernet line to use normally with my TiBook, so I will use that unless I need to go elsewhere in the apartment/house.

It only took since March 2nd to get this taken care of, but at least it is good to go.

whats the bit/byte difference anyways? why is it measured in these two ways and what is the factor to convert between the two?

A bit is 8 bytes.

I think bits are used instead of bytes for transfer speeds because they sound bigger. Do you want 56Kb or 7KB? The average user would want the 56 Kb because it sounds bigger.

here is a screen shot to show my new speeds... considering how on the 2nd of the month, I was getting 200-300kbps speeds, this is turbo charged, and on NO2 :D

I ran the test three times, all three in under one minute. The other two came up with 1577.7 Kbps and 1598.1 Kbps... I am putting up the best yet... a healthy 1611.4 Kbps.... a FAR cry from two weeks ago.. :D

Congratulations to me! I have the slowest connection speed . . . 28800 bits per second!

To correct Rower_CPU eight bits represent one byte. You had it the other way around.
keithcobbett, CL refers to Cache Level. All computers shipped since the 233 iMac have come with a Level 2 Cache. The high-end Powermacs come with a 1 or 2MB Level 3 Cache.

Another excellent website for cheap memory is www.18004memory.com However, the last time I checked (March 15) the company did not update their site to have memory for the G4 iMac. (It might be there; maybe I missed it.)

I just tried www.macsolutions.com and their website works fine.
