View Full Version : eMacs Soon?

MacRumors
May 5, 2003, 09:43 PM
eMac updates are expected as early as tomorrow...

ThinkSecret reported (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/04/20030415021723.shtml) on 1GHz high end eMacs approximately 2 weeks ago with speeds ranging from 800mhz to 1GHz.

More recent supports suggest $799, $999, and $1299 pricing, hinting at a new model at the low end with steady pricing on the other two models. Speeds are expected to range from 800MHz to 1GHz.

A Page 2 article (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030503160304.shtml) also suggested that new Apple updates are expected this week. eMacs remain (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030501191708.shtml) the top candidate -- though Apple also has revealed that new music will also become available (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/05/20030505122652.shtml) on May 6th. International support is expected to follow...

The emac is definitely a necessary entry level product for Apple - good for them to monitor it's progress.

Let's rename all the months to match up with our favorite company. Next, June becomes "Jobs," right, then what?

Well, I guess this means the CRT iMac will be officially retired, even from the education store. Or maybe they'll lower the price even more, to $599? That would be fantastic. Schools are so cash-strapped the prices really need to be as low as possible.

a 1 ghz g4 superdrive for 1299 or whatever seems like quite a deal to me.
this emac update might actually make me lean towards getting a cheaper emac as compared to the 17 imac.

The eMac has always been a great buy. I bought mine reluctantly as a cheap stopgap, only to be surprised at the power it has. It will last me a good long while! GREAT screen, surprisingly good speakers, even for music, and great looking too.

I hope you can BTO a CD-R or Combo for the bottom model--almost a necessity for backing up and sharing. Then that would be a really nice low end! And if you can afford the 1GHz + swivel stand (highly recommended) and 640 RAM... you have yourself a nice machine!

Adding TV out is really nice--I'd play DVDs that way if I could. I suppose the iMac will get that next time.

Are we missing something that might be implied?

You can't just give out a 1GHz machine at that low of a price with that many features.......it will cut into the iMac sales.......

Lower iMac prices? Updated iMacs?

If the iMac prices are lowered, then the PowerMac is a real bad deal.....new PowerMac pricing to clear inventory? new low-end 970 announcement?

Maybe i'm reading a bit into it, but you can't give away a machine equivilent to the top-end consumer machine without a ripple effect.......either of apple making an adjustment, or in customer's purchasing decisions.

While this would all be great, I don't think we'd see quite that big of a ripple on a random tuesday in May... too close to WWDC and other reasons, but mainly because that would be a pretty huge step for them to take without anyone (present company excluded) even having a guess at it.

I, however, wouldn't mind it in the least.

Could this be the begining of a new price point? Could this be some of the steps we heard about to gain market share? Hmmm.... I like the sound of this.

Could this be the IBM effect? CHeaper chips means cheaper computers.

ANyone know if IBM is making G4s now that Motoslowa has given the go-ahead?

I was just looking at the eMac's on the Apple Store, and noticed they advertise it as coming with iTunes 2: "gives everyone easy-to-use tools for organizing and managing their entire digital audio collection"! Wow, now I can't WAIT to get one of these :D.

I wonder what new and amazing features will come with itunes THREE!!! Getting giddy just thinking about it . . . . . .

Um, you can and it won't if the 1 GHz machine in question weighs twice as much, is 5 times as noisy and has a 10 times crappier screen on it.

When the emacs first came out a year ago, I thought they were too good of a deal (by apple's standards) to pass up so I got one. A year later I have some mixed feelings. The screen is slightly blurry, flickers unbearably at its highest resolution and is hard to look at for a long time (like most CRTs in my opinion). It is pretty powerful and it was definitely a major upgrade from my lombard in terms of performance, but if I had it to do over again, I might have shelled out a little more for an iMac, or waited a little longer. As it is, I think I'm going to end up owning this thing for a lot shorter period (maybe 1.5 yrs) than I normally would keep a computer for (closer to 3 yrs).

Just a little warning before you get excited about 1 GHz eMacs.

Another interesting point is that they seem to be able to boot into OS9...

CD-ROM and Combo drive equipped eMac models have both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 installed. Mac OS X is the default boot-up operating system. Choose optional languages and keyboards other than the country default language, if needed.

Apple Computer Inc. on Tuesday announced the release of a new family of eMac all-in-one desktop systems.

The eMac has been a hit with both education customers and consumers, and we've made it more powerful and affordable than ever," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing. "The eMac offers customers a complete system that is the ideal entry point for today's digital lifestyle."

The new eMacs offer up to a 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor, a faster 4x SuperDrive, high performance ATI Radeon 7500 graphics, up to 80GB hard drives and internal support for AirPort Extreme wireless networking. The eMac also has a 17-inch flat CRT display.

Check out Apple Store. 1 gig eMacs. 800 at 799 for 800. 1299 for 1 gig. Airport Extreme in the top end!
Apple website not yet updated just the store. Shipping same day!

Not bad for 799, and to think a gig G4 for 1299 WITH superdrive.

Didn't the old eMac have 100mhz bus? If so, they bumped it to 133.

What video card did it have before? Is the 7500 an improvement over the old one?

Hmm... Those prices are pretty tempting...

New ones are... Even the $799 lowest model can be equipped

Yeah, old emac had 100 mhz bus and GForce 2 MX..you can still see on the US site, they fogot to change a graphic... How longs it before they drop the 15" iMac now? The bottom end eMac has just as fast processor, bigger screen (in theory but maybe not viewable), better graphics card(?) and a faster buss and it is way way cheaper...just the iMac has more memory and a combo instead of a cd rom and the benifit (or disbenifit depending where you stand) of a Flat screen. The 15" iMac is no way value for money now in my opinion...a price drop would make that beautiful 17" look even more tempting though ;)

Moe
May 6, 2003, 09:08 AM
Definitely now the "best buy." With a reasonable 133MHz non-DDR 512MB single-dimm/60GB HD/Combo Drive configuration, and no AE, the 1GHz is $1149 ($1091 educational faculty/student).

Upgrade the 80GB HD/SuperDrive (doesn't say what speed that I can find) model to 512MB single-dimm to compete with the new 17" iMac w/512 single-dimm (no AE or Bluetooth on either), and it's $1399 vs $1999 ($1244 vs $1939 educational).

Hardly makes the $600 premium ($695 educational) for the LCD panel and bandwidth-limited DDR of the 17" iMac seem worth it. And definitely obsoletes the rumored to be discontinued 15" iMac.

If you absolutely, positively gotta buy a Mac before the 970s, investing as little as possible in a G4 with one of these makes the most sense to me.

However, now that the bottom-of-the-line Mac has the same computing power as the iMac, and except for level 3 cache, the top of the line PowerBook, and the bottom of the line PowerMac, I have to really rethink my prediction of the 970s not coming until this time next year.

My earlier post accidentally used "by for your school" prices instead of "buy for yourself." I shouldn't post until after the 2nd cup of coffee.
