View Full Version : New eMacs Arrive
Latino
May 6, 2003, 07:49 AM
well, rumours have been confirmed. We have a new eMac.
More importantly, at least in the UK, now the basic eMac is just £649 for the 800Mhz version. That is not a bad deal.
Now, since these new eMacs have the ATI 7500, I would be interested in knowing if the dual monitor hack for the ibooks with 7500 radeon cards also works in the emac. Would be kind of neat to hook a 1Ghz eMac to my 19" CRT and have dual desktop!
In the meantime, I'm still saving up to get that new ibook. Damn student debts!

Darn! You got to the site to post before me;).
[edit] I still don't see how they are putting a mere 128MB of RAM in the MID-range model! I might be able to understand in the low $799 model, but not anything else. Heck, OS X requires a MINIMUM of 128MB of RAM! Come on Apple! Why should any of your products be "just enough to get by"?

Apple's front page hasn't been updated, even the eMac page itself hasn't been updated. I only saw the release story on MacCentral just yet. How do we know for sure it's been released? Any other sources?
Ah, now I see: Apple's PR site HAS been updated with the press release. Okay, so it IS true...

I just went to www.apple.com and was greeted with a great big message saying "The New eMac", so I went to the UK Apple Store and there it was! :D

lol. I just check the most obvious place to look: the Apple online store;). lol. And if you click on the link for it in the store, it still says under Features and options, "700 or 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor." ;). looks like they didn't really have this update slated to be anything big or they would have taken the store down for a minute and made sure to update it all.

It was pure chance. I checked this morning (9am BST) and there was nothing. Then I remembered that these things are not updated until about 13:00, when the US site is updated. So I checked now to see what was on and there it was. I don't do it again, promise. Leave me your email and I'll warn you next time. :P

I prefer it this way. I can get RAM cheaper elsewhere, other than Apple. Anyway, low ram is an Apple feature. I personnally don't think 256Mb is enough for the pro line, but that is what comes as default. It should be 512. But I still prefer it that way, so that I can get my own ram cheaper elsewhere

Sort of dissapointing...
$1,698.00
1 GHz PowerPC G4
1GB SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA drive
SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme built-in
Seems like they may moved AirPort Extreme onto the PCI bus.
Q: What PCI bus...
A: Well if it still has SDRAM, then they probably didn't change the chipset. And the old chipset was the SDRAM PowerMac's chipset -- which does have a PCI bus.
---
The good news is that even if the rest of the OS 9 legacy lineup gets EOLd, the iBook and the eMac may still be OS 9 bootable for a while longer.
Of course it's all wait and see, to have people check OS 9 booting and the new tech documents at Apple when they show up to see what chipset they use.

Apple hasn't even finished updating their pages. The front page of the store still says "eMac's from $999" and even on the order page the top say "700 or 800 MHz" eMac's. Only the bottom of the order page is correct...

I just noticed this line on the eMac's technical specs page. It's about OS 9 booting:
Startup in Mac OS 9 is available only with CD-ROM and Combo drive configurations. All configurations can run Mac OS 9 applications in Mac OS X Classic mode.
So, the SuperDrive eMac is not able to boot into OS 9. Nice move, Apple! One step at a time...

The HW should be the same across the line, and the iBook still lists OS 9.
So the iBook and eMac may be the two machines that survive to keep OS 9 booting alive for a bit longer than Steve's delayed cutoff date.

As per the recent rumors, today Apple released speed-bumped eMacs:
$799: 800MHz G4, 128MB SDRAM, 40GB HD, CD-ROM
$999: 1GHz G4, 128MB SDRAM, 60GB HD, Combo drive
$1299: 1GHz G4, 256MB SDRAM, 80GB HD, SuperDrive
Head to Apple's eMac page (http://www.apple.com/emac) and have a look.

The eMac is a considerably better deal now, but... still only 128 MB of RAM minimum? I can't possibly imagine how it would be too expensive to include 256, even if it's just through another 128 MB stick. Of course, this might be a technique to drive people towards the iMac...

The base machine should have more RAM. I suppose it's aiming at a price point. To be honest if I was short of cash I'd still go for the midrange one - £150 more but it has an extra 200MHz and a combo drive. It too needs more RAM. For OS X the base should be 256MB. What's the difference of a 256MB stick vs. 128MB? $20??

My comments and price comparisons here. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=338873&#post338873)
A really usable machine should have 512MB preferably in a single dimm for later upgrade.

May 6, 2003, 09:36 AM
Disappointing. It would have been better if they had upgraded it to DDR memory, but I guess they need something to differentiate the iMac from the eMac.
It is nice to see a $799 model again, and it is actually a pretty good value considering the monitor is built in to the machine.
Makes the 15" iMac G4 a really crummy deal, though. I think Apple is trying to differentiate the models as much as possible, but that's hard when Moto is still pumping out crappy chips.

It should also be noted that, as speculated, the CRT iMacs have been officially EOL'd with this announement. The classic iMacs have now been removed from the education site as well.

As an owner of a 17" "Spring" imac, I'm not entirely bothered by this update. The adjustable monitor alone is enough for me to feel confident with the imac vs the emac.
Also, the bus system in the imac is 133mhz. what about the emac? still at 100mhz?
It's definitely a nice update for those that want to get in on the mac side for cheap.

waaaait a minute. When the power macs came out with DDR ram every one said it wasn't a true implementation of DDR anyway. This gave me the impression DDR just cost more but had very little speed advantage.
Could someone inform me, would the emac be better with DDR like MacPhisto says?

Why is everyone so negative about this update? Why do you all expect the eMac to have the same specs as a PowerMac for $999? I am saving up and buying the $999 1Ghz combo drive model, call me dumb, but I think it is a good deal, and I think it might be a little snappier running Jag then my old iMac DV.

Looks like OS 9 booting may still be quite important to the education crowd...
Apple just moved the Airport to the PCI bus (yes it has one if it's still using the old PowerMac chipset) and added Bluetooth to the USB.
But we'll see exactly what happened when the tech docs get updated.

That rumor surprised me, but it's one more nice addition! Games and DVDs on TV!
A very nice entry level.
I wish you could add just a CD-RW to the bottom model for a few bucks more--since that part can't be upgraded later, while RAM can.
The middle model's a great buy, though, for another $200. Boost the RAM to 640 MB yourself for under $80.
If you're thining of buying, I think you'll be very happy. Mine is a year old and it's a great system. PC friends are amazed--"I like your monitor!! Where's the computer?"

Did anyone else notice this...the 800Mhz machine is listed as having a 133Mhz system bus like the 1Ghz has...doesn't the iMac 15" only have a 100Mhz bus? This really makes the iMac look like a ripoff, of course the extra 33Mhz of bus speed might not do much performance wise. But still it is there at a great price.

That's true, I didn't realize that the 15" iMac is only a 100 bus. Here's something interesting - if you go to the hardware page on apple.com, at the top, it says 'new 17" iMac.' If you go to the iMac page all you see is the 17." Fuel to the fire that the 15" is being phased out? Maybe Apple doesn't want to bother trying to differentiate that model from the eMac, and will focus on the 17," with DDR and the bigger screen.

I hope I'm not the only one who sees this:
eMac's Tech Specs say it has "Apple Keyboard and Apple Mouse."
At least iMac's and Power Mac's Tech Specs clearly state "Apple Pro Keyboard and Apple Pro Mouse."
Apple has been very strict with its trademark and product names. Even though the few eMac pics on the site show the old Pro Keyboard.

I had a similar response when I got my first iMac. The lass behind the counter said, "Your monitor is here." I was a little irked that she didn't recognize what an iMac was since it was one of the best, if not THE best selling computer at the time.
But even sillier is when I pulled out my 15" LCD monitor (just a monitor, not an LCD iMac), and some people were amazed and thought that was the entire computer. Now, that would have been pretty impressive, but no.
RAM isn't that expensive...unless you get it from Apple. I tend to go to ramseeker.com and get some great deals on RAM.

I totally agree with you. I was looking at that combo drive model, and thinking, "d*** that's a sweet deal." A 1 Ghz G4, combo, 60 gigs, and AE ready for 1k?? Very nice, apple, very nice indeed. It's nice to have a low end model at only $800, but the combo is really a great deal. My only complaint is, as others have said, 128 RAM is a joke. But that's quite easy and cheap to upgrade, especially if you don't pay apple's sky-high prices.
p.s. it's sweet that they got a 133 bus. :D

I just don't see a good reason to buy an iMac now, unless you really really just want something pretty. Not to say that the eMac isn't pretty considering I am more than in love with mine. And just like everyone says, buy some 3rd party RAM and you're flying. . .

As for the e vs i argument, the 17" iMac has more going for it than just aesthetics. Bigger, widescreen, movable display, better graphics card, DDR Ram. Everything else is a wash, right? Except price, of course. :p

heh, I'm so poor, the price just becomes a big issue for me. The graphics card I could definitely use and maybe a little bit more screen real estate, but the DDR doesn't entice me much and the moveable screen isn't as good as a good moveable chair. It's just strange that my xBench score on a 700mHz eMac is still competitive with most iMacs at 800mHz with the DDR and whatnot. I guess most don't tweak though so nevermind. . .

I work in a district that is almost entirely mac. Many are very aprehensive about moving to osX b/c there is a lot of educational software that is only for os9. I know there's classic, but they're afraid it won't run as well. Also, the stuff that does run in osX costs a lot considering the hundreds (maybe thousands) of computers in the district and the loss of funding I'm sure many districts are feeling across the country. In addition, you're not just talking about training (for us) about 750 teachers, but also thousands of students. That adds up to a lot of time and money that my disctrict is a little scared to committ to when os9 is still working so well for most.
We do have a few rogue teachers using osX, but I'd say it is less than 20.

I think it's really important for Apple to have a good entry computer for people who want to get in on the Apple experience but don't have the cash. $799 does that job nicely, but I think it should come with a cd burner and then it would be seriously competing with the low end PCs.

I think it is not coincidence that the eMac has been updated in the midst of the iTunes Music Store buzz. The music store has been giving Apple a lot of press, and I imagine that there are many more consumers for whom a Mac is now on the radar screen compared to before the store.
And the 970's great, but for Apple's new business the eMacs will go a long way to opening a lot of stores all over the world's dwellings:)
Hope this all adds up to much more business for Apple.

I think Apple is only hurting themselves by including only 128ram in ANY machine they sell. Have any of you used a mac os x machine with only 128? It's dooooog slow. New users (switchers) may not realize it just needs more ram and it will be FAST...they'll just think macs are slow...you shouldn't have to upgrade the RAM of a brand new computer just to get decent performance!!

The Apple comments seem to infer that iDVD is the reason that the top model is OSX only. Maybe something about the Logic Board and encoding speeds, or maybe just the fact that iDVD now only works in X (the newest version, 3).

Actually I don't think the change had much to do with schools. If you can save a dollar or two on every mouse and keyboard you bundle with a computer profits are better. Along with that, as the bottom line production costs become lower, so does the price the consumer pays. The keyboard and mouse look real nice and should be easy to use and functional. I think some money was saved by taking the adjusting features off of the keyboard and mouse and moving the USB ports.

While it is not a full implementation of DDR, the memory would run faster than SDRAM PC133 memory - at least that is how I understand it.
This is where Motorola has really screwed Apple. Apples would be faster if they had a 200MHZ bus+ and full implementation of DDR memory. The FSB has really bottlenecked the Mac. Can't wait for a 400MHZ bus when IBM comes to town.

Heh, yeah my eMac came with 128 MB of RAM and it was death, Apple really should up the RAM to at least 256 MB (which is still not enough yet what I have). But you are totally right, Apple may be hurting themselves because while 800mHz isn't blazingly fast nowadays, with a big stick of RAM 800MHz is fast enough for anyone that purchasing their first Mac or doesn't need to do serious number crunching.
P.S. You think 128 MB is hell, my friend was trying to run OS X on her PowerMac Sawtooth with only 64 MB of RAM. Now that was death, hell, ressurection, death and hell again, I've never seen so many page outs. . .

Yes, but buy your eMac from anywhere other than Apple (MacConnection etc.) and you'll get free memory. So it really doesn't cost anything.

check out the new keyboard design of the emac at apple in the emac gallery:
http://www.apple.com/r/store/gallery/emac2003/5.html
so the new keyboard rumor is confirmed.
apple has a quick and efficient organistation between productdesign and promotiondesign.

Retailers usually charge installation fee. e.g. Macwarehouse charges apporx. $39 installation fee, and at Macsolutions you can get a 256MB memory stick for $37.00. So it is really not free. Just looks that way.
Agree with everyone that Apple should have more memory, at least 128MB more per computer, probably 256 more would be more like it!

Hey, Steamboat,
This is a little off topic, but how did you end up with a metal Camino that still has the three buttons at the upper left-hand corner? When I metalifized my Camino (or any other app that can be metalifized, for that matter) those buttons aren't visible anymore. (They're still there, you can click them, they just aren't visible.)

To those who mention that the SuperDrive model doesn't boot to 9, it's a 4x SuperDrive (I think). All of the 4x models do not boot into 9. I don't believe it's because of iDVD 3, since if you have a machine that boots into 9, you can use iTunes 3 and up in OS X and iTunes 2 in OS 9. If you install iDVD 3, it shouldn't replace iDVD 2 in OS 9.

I didn't take the time to check educational discounts, but i think this speaks for itself. If apple really cared about the education market, they would show it for a change. Going with a windows solution gives educatators the ability to teach kids on a platform that the majority of the business world uses.
Im pro mac, im not an educator, but it is clear from these specs, apple is completely apathetic to their lost marktet share in education...what does the e stand for?

The "e" stands for everyone.
Those price <> performance issues are accross the board... especially the "Pro" market.
Want cheap speed, but without OS X? Or want something nice. :)

I want something nice and hey it'd also be good if it just worked. How about that, I got an eMac. Didn't Ellen Feiss teach you anything about the educational market? :D
I've noticed something odd at the eMac page in the Apple Store. At the bottom, there's a datasheet available, but the name of the file is eMac_2003.pdf. Now, all the other datasheets I've seen indicate the month that the product was released. Could this mean that we won't see any more eMac revisions this year?

A really usable machine should have 512MB preferably in a single dimm for later upgrade.
Well, that is really only good if you have regular SDRAM or DDR RAM that is not duel channel (which is a heck of a lot better than single channel DDR RAM). I don't think Apple has duel channel DDR RAM support (hopefully will soon), but it gives you almost an effective double memory bandwidth.
I thought we were talkin' about current generation Macs here. I understand the two dimm thing on dual-channel... buying 30 of the 3.0HT/800 this summer. Except for running memory benchmarks, the dual-channel isn't that big of a gain over the 3.06HT/533, but every little bit helps on simulations that can run hours or days.

Yesterday I was having a look in the Apple Australia store and I noticed that every product except the emac had the 'new' logo next to it (apple australia store still has the old design unlike US store). And I thought to myself, 'wow, if they do update the emac as some rumours had predicted i wonder if all the products will have new next to them.'
So when I saw that the emacs had been updated today, I, of course, went and had a look at the store and I saw straight-away that the imac, powermac and xserve had all had their 'new' logos removed. It is also interesting to note that the pbooks, although updated less recently than the imacs, still maintain their 'new' logo (though this could be more due to the fact that the 17'' took so long to actually ship).
speculation: i think it is entirely possible that these three products will all be upgraded to the ppc970 simultaneously. I see no reason why the top-end imac can't move from a 1ghz G4 to a 1Ghz ppc970 (i believe it is rumoured that one exists right?) and that the low-end pmac could start at a single 1.2ghz ppc970 (or even a 1ghz actually). for those who might say that there is not enough difference between these suggested products it is quite similar to how it is now. both the top-end imac and the low-end pmac are at 1ghz G4's and the imac sells for $3800 AUD whilst the pmac sells for $3100 AUD. Actually, perhaps it is more likely, and more in bearing with past Apple movements, that the low end pmac would go to being a 1.25ghz G4?
furthermore, perhaps it is just wishful thinking on my part, but i think the release of fcp4 in june also points to the possibility of a ppc970 announcement at least.
thank you for taking the time to read my, most likely, wishful thinking post (i would love my next mac to be a ppc970 imac).

I think that it's unlikely that the iMac will be updated immediately. Maybe it will within a couple of months, maybe even a couple of weeks, but I think that Apple is more likely to want the focus to be on the Power line. Further, I simply cannot imagine that there would be any sense at all in leaving part of the Power line on the G4, not if they can update the entire line at once. My guess is that the spread will be something like Fast: 1.4SP970, Faster: 1.6DP970, Fastest: 1.8DP970. Probably when the iMac gets updated it will go to a 1.2SP970.
Of course, all of this is purely blind guessing, so take it as such. In any event, here's to new 970s sooner than later! :D

I'd say that you're reading way too much into this. Macs have always been more expensive, even with Edu discounts. But, they are also much easier for schools to maintain (or at least traditionally have been - not that Macs are getting that much harder, just that I will grant that Windows is getting a little better).
As for the choice of OS having to do with 'teach kids on a platform that the majority of the business world uses', that is nonsense. (Not that most of the business world uses Windows, but that that should enter into the decision making process.) There have been any number of studies that have shown that children can learn on [i]either system, and easily adapt to the other. It's the adults that have more difficulty going from one to the other.
Frankly, I think that it makes sense to have some of each type of computer in schools. At this point they play reasonably nicely together.

I've been waiting it seems like forever for a fast and cheap Mac to upgrade from my aging iMac DV G3-400. The new eMac models finally hit my threshold. I bought a new $999 1GHZ G4 combo-drive eMac yesterday from my local Apple Store (I was so happy they had them in stock on the same day they were released!). I stopped off at CompUSA and bought 256MB of RAM for $25 (after $20 rebate) on the way home. I installed the RAM, set up the eMac in minutes. After playin around for a few minutes, I ran AutoUpdate and updated to OS 10.2.6, iTunes4, Quicktime 6.2, and a few others in about 30 minutes (all automatically). Then I was off enjoying the the Net, the new iTunes store, iPhoto, and I watched a few movie previews with Quicktime. I've had RoadRunner broadband Internet for a few years on the older iMac, but it really flies now on the eMac - and that was with MS Internet Explore as I have not yet downladed Safari.
I also picked up MS Office X for $199 with the eMac, but haven't opened it yet - trying to see if I can be happy with AppleWorks instead so I can return Office to save a few bucks.
Apple has a winner with the updated eMac line - maybe in a few months the $799 eMac model will have a 1GHZ processer, a CD-RW, and 256MB of RAM. That would be a HUGE seller!
PS - I'm also one of those people who think the Apple mouse is nice looking, but it really needs left and right buttons and a scroll wheel. I'm going back to my Logitech mouse.

No offense, but maybe you should go to the Education Store.
$699 for the low-end eMac. I think it's even cheaper for schools in bulk. Free or low cost shipping, set-up, support, etc. OS 9 and X. All-in-One unit (monitor built-in). And the best part, it's a Mac. Have you ever used a Dell. IMO it's always hit or miss with them.
But they should have more RAM.

I remember when the iMac 1Ghz superdrive was released there was talk that most of them were shipping with a sony DVD writer over the Pioneer model that Apple has used mostly in the past. I was just wondering if anyone who has bought a new eMac with superdrive could report if the drive is a sony or a pioneer. My apple centre hasn't got one on display yet (they have them in stock just not on display). Thanks...
