Well I love my current machine (DP GHz Quicksilver) like it's a member of the family, but I'd have to say it was my Cube. It was an absolute workhorse for the better part of three years, and it ALWAYS turned heads. It did anything I asked it to, and it was the machine that brought me into OS X. I still think that's among the sexiest things I've ever seen a computer do. Seriously, have you ever seen OS X running on a Cube with an Apple LCD? Just gorgeous. I really did love that machine. Sad to see it go, really, but you can't hang on to the past forever. ;)

My favorite mac will always be my first love my Performa 600. What a pile of crap the performas were but I still have fond memories of her.

my powerbook g3 333 was a workhorse for me.

It was quick and nimble and served me well when I was freelancing but worked a 9-5

I'm going with my current TiBook...Rev. B 667...

I've run the living hell out of that thing, kept the fan on at a constant, using it for a main computer for about 7 months before getting my 17" iMac...

that thing ran it's ass off...still does... :D

I've got to agree with shakespeare, this 17 PB is an absolute monster, everything that was missing or poor on my old 400 is just perfect on this, I've even stopped handling it with kid gloves, it gets slung in the bag like I've had it forever...

No higher praise, it's the mutt's nuts:D

i ran a cool little home studio with my quadra 650. i had a keyboard and 3 sound modules all running through opcode's vision. "back in the day when i was a teenager..." (tribe called quest, for all you young 'uns out there;) ) great hobby i wish i still had the time for.

but now, i'm all growns up, and my little rev a imac fully tweaked with 512mb and a 20gb hard drive does me proud. luckily you don't have to have a fast machine to write web applications! back when i was running 9, i had the game wizard voodoo2 card in the mezzanine slot and i soldered a floppy drive to the motherboard. the ribbon cable is still hanging out of her...

i've had others, but those 2 stick in my mind the most. i've still got the quadra, crying out for 68k linux. my imac does its best to handle the eye candy x gives you. which is my favorite, tough to say.

"thanks for the memories"

btw, my first post!

My B&W G3 tower is just the best. I'll move up to something faster later this year, but my tower's definitely staying in the family. It's never given me a moment of grief, has rarely crashed (never since using os x), is slow by comparison, but steady. I love it.

the mac that really changed my perception of computers was the mac classic...before that, i didn't see much use for computers beyond a curiosity and a game playing machine

my G3/300 Wall St powerbook was indestructible. I put in a new hard drive, twice, 28GB when Apple was only offering 12GB, maxed out the RAM at 768MB when supposedly the max was 512MB. had all sorts of extras for it ix3D card to drive ext monitors etc. and after about 3 years, the black paint in the middle section of the case started to scratch off, so i got the dremel to it and powersanded it all down (while it was turned on i might add) so i has an awesome brushed metal case. never failed me that thing.

a close 2nd would be my old G3/300 MT, I had (i think) 4 HDs in it at one point, one of which was gaffer taped to the inside as there were no more drive carrier spaces. again, solid as anything, and it was the AV one, which was fantastic.

had to sell 'em both to pay for rent when things were real tough last year though :(

Macintosh LC II. Foster Farms herself. That thing may have been a design nightmare, but it lived through some OUTRAGEOUS abuse, and it worked like a charm. A little slow, but hey. I still have it somewhere here, i'll bet money it still boots ;)

oh, that's right!!

the lc 2 and lc 3 were also great machines....they replaced the mac classics in the lab i used...i only used word processing in the final year of college...that means for the first six full semesters, i typed all my papers

it was funny when the first lc computers came in...they were only to be used with special permission and my girlfriend at the time ran the lab and would not let me use it...and she had no idea that lc meant "low cost"..ha

it wasn't "in" there. it actually came through the spot where the metal plate just below the usb plugs are on the side.

i'm not sure how many revisions this went through, but the motherboard in the imac was basically a powerbook motherboard. there was an aftermarket ribbon cable that was male on one end that plugged right into the spot on the motherboard where the powerbook's floppy would have plugged into. i then took a floppy drive out of an old lc iii and put it on the other end. not many people believe me, but could i make something like that up????
sorry, no pics...

I'd have to go with the machine that started my love of Macs, a Powerbook 1400c, except that it wasn't my computer. Instead, I'll go with my iBook 500 DVD. She was a sweet little machine when I got her and I loved every minute of using her until the screen had problems and Apple decided to replace it with the 800 Combo I'm using now. The iBook is a beautiful little machine. I bought it for the size and the internal optical drive (there was no comparable PC at the time), and have loved the Mac ever since.

I will say that my PB 667 was the computer that changed the way I compute, and will always remind me of my first experiences with Mac and OS X. What a great computer that was.

However, this 17in PB is simply amazing. It feels so much more sturdy and durable. The construction is so much better.

If it is possible to Love a computer...well...then I guess I Love this machine.

The 17in PB is the best product I have ever owned...

Asking what the "best" Mac I ever had gives me an opportunity to name more than one, each in its own catagory.

"Best" in Show:
My 20th Anniversary Macintosh. Nothing dropped jaws like that machine. I could even start it up, eject cd's, and turn on the tv function from across the room with the hand held remote control. And the sound was A W E S O M E .

"Best" Functionality / Workhorse:
My current G4 tower at work with 22" cinema display. I've had it for YEARS now and it just keeps going and going and going...and the screen real estate is to die for...I couldn't imagine ever going smaller in a desktop display for the rest of my career...I hope she lasts a great while longer!

"Best" Portable Machine:
Hands down, what I'm typing on now, the first TiPowerBook. What a machine! I remember hearing the quotes soon after it came out, "Probably the best Macintosh ever built." And I have to agree...the size is great, it's taken some abuse, and has never given me grief. It's truly one of the top 5 machines that company has ever made.

actually, we are both macheads to the core but her school district switched to pc machines, but i still kept on coming to her labs

she dropped me and went for this man with a columbia master's degree and a great salary who was her own age

i was 15 years younger so she traded up to an older, wiser, and richer man

and then, the gall of her...he he...she writes me this mean letter, years later, of how i left her...women...sheesh:p

May 14, 2003, 04:12 PM
why do i say that?

because while the current mac lineup are great machines, i think what would make them truly great and stand out head over shoulders over all macs in apple's history would be...lower price

i think apple can offer the best mac of all time, dollar for dollar, if they offer the emac with a combo drive at $799 dollars usd, or the ibook with combo drive for $999 dollars usd

at those prices, they would go head to head with the pc world in features for price

unfortunately, i think the pc world is still soundly kicking our behinds in the value for dollar category...sure we have the better os and that counts for a lot with someone with unlimited money, but for the average poor high school, junior high, and younger students....that does not matter until apple can get within a $150 dollars striking distance of the cheapest pc offerings

compaq hp offers a combo drive laptop for $850 dollars us and similar desktop combo drive desktops for $650...so apple needs its combo laptops for $999 and desktops for $799 to stay up there in value for dollar

if apple pulls those things off, $999 combo drive laptops and $799 combo drive desktops, then those will be the best macs, for the dollar, that one can possibly own:D

My Tibook 667 is my favorite. It allowed me to finally freelance on the side and it has paid for itself more than 10 times over in the last year. Now that's what a computers supposed to do.

Definitely my current machine, a G4-tified Pismo.

It's durable, runs like a dream, and has never given me any grief. Plus, I love its aesthetics! It's also got those clever expansion bays, which Apple's current models lack.

If only it had built-in Bluetooth... (and an upgradable Graphics processor... and, what the hell, dual 970s...) :D

Probably the Mac I'm writing this on.

It's a Blueberry iMac DV (400Mhz, 512MB RAM, 8MB Rage 128).

I tinkered with the insides and put a 30GB HD in, bought an external Firewire burner and an Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker set-up for it. It's gone through so much, I can't even recall all of the great memories which have passed on it's screen. Sadly its days are numbered. I'm looking at the new eMacs or a refurb tower for around $1K this summer. Progress hurts. ;)

My Pismos, I like them so much that I have 3 now!

I think is the best computer Apple ever made, it is getting a bit heavier but they are so nice that I just exchange my dual 500 for anothe Pismo last week. I'm a VJ and I need reliable and flexible equipment to take with me.

I've gotta say my ALL-TIME-FAVOURITE Mac has to be my beautiful little Cube.

wsteineker's dead right - there's nothing like seeing a Cube run OSX on an LCD. Simply gorgeous...

And to me, I'll never get rid of it either.

It's a member of my family - it entertains and informs me with games, DVD's, music and the internet, helps my wife write her psychology assignments, and teaches my 3 year old to read.

What more can you ask for?!?

Well, isn't that basically the 12" powerbook? the only thing that's keeping it from being classified as an ibook is its name and its aluminum chassis.

it's got to be my tibook. i take it eveywhere. it's now a part of my everyday life. i can barely believe how much i use it. i run the battery down to 10% everyday. my quicksilver is great, my sawtooth was awesome, but the tibook takes the cake. hands down.

you could call the latter the "AliBook," hah.

The SE I grew up on. We bought it second hand when the Mac ][ was released. I was around 8 I think.

I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for that machine.

I learnt to code, write music, touchtype, word process, animate... everything on that machine.

And its still going. We gave it away to my Uncle some years ago, but its a little trooper of machine. In its very long life its only had one problem - a power supply blown by a power surge. Word 5 on that machine runs great.

So many memories.

Well I have only had two, so of those two it would have to be my current one. My 1 Ghz TiBook Rocks! I use it constantly!

I am noticing some cosmetic wear and tear, but I use it at least 3 to 6 hours a day every day. So I can't blame it for getting a little worn.

Even though its getting a bit long in the tooth - my TiPB is still very cool and gets looks occassionally when I take it out at meetings.

I'm not a huge fan of the aluminum.

Although I love my i gig tibook, my favorite mac of all time is my first, the Centris 660 AV. I ran my cable tv, my snes and my video camera through it. Truly remarkable machine it was. Too bad it died five years ago.

Definitely going to have to give props to my beige G3 desktop. Bought it as a 266MHz, but overclocked it to 300MHz. This thing is many, many years old and is still fast enough for nearly everything I have to do day-to-day, including itunes, office, and kdx. Probably my favorite part about the G3s was the ability to overclock them so easily :D

I have been most pleased with my Centris 650, G4-400, and Dual 833 and Dual 1Ghz.

They've all been great but the iici and the 8500 and the 233PB were just OK.
The new dual was too much compared to Windoze machines.

The G4-400 was the best value- got it for I believe $1400 and it's still got some value.
