Reading wikipedia I understand that the "Sensor Bar" is what picks up the signal from the "Wiimote". Can the wii on it's own be used to pick up sgnals from the 'Wiimote" or do you have to use the sensor bar all the time?

The sensor bar has two IR transmitters that help the Wiimote know where it is. Then the Wiimote gives the Wii that information, along with all the motion stuff and normal button presses. So, yes, you do need it (or any other IR transmitters) for all the pointing/aiming stuff.

It comes with a stand, and some adhesive stuff, or you can set it on something. Personally I just stuck it on top of my TV between it and my DVD player and it works perfectly.

It depends on your setup but as long as you don't have a front projection it should be easy.

it costs 250USD but in pounds its not the equivalent because its a known fact that video game companies screw europe and offer it for like 250pounds/euro

So it should work fine if I stand it on the top of a CRT television then?

It's really easy. Sit the sensor bar on top of your TV, or underneath it, or stick it to something, or put it on the stand.

EDIT:

So it should work fine if I stand it on the top of a CRT television then?

Yup.

Everyone does. Inflation, VAT, whatever the reason. plus things like HDTV's seem to be ridiculously expensive compared to same resolution monitors etc, simply because of the HDTV moniker.

Everything costs more, but wages are higher on the whole.
