I hope this thread hasn't been started yet. I was just wondering what everyones favorite game was that came out in 2006.

Mine is Gears of War (Xbox360)

Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess.

It's the best game since OoT.

Runners up would be - Tetris DS, Animal Crossing DS and Final Fantasy 3. I just didn't find a decent console game in 2006 till TP.

My playing this year has been pretty minimal, but I'd say that New Super Mario Bros and LoZ: Twilight Princess are pretty high up there.

World of Warcraft ;)

Actually, if we're talking consoles, I think Lego Star Wars 2 (360) is a LOT of fun... It's a household fave.

I also really liked Condemned (360), but I finished it too quickly.

The only game I play reguarly, without fail, is WoW. Very much looking forwards to the expansion pack for that in a few weeks...

most surprising game of 2006

for me was Chromehounds. I hated / nay detested the demo and ripped it to pieces here.

But then I took a gamble and bought the full game anyway and it was one of the best games (not quite making it into my top 5, but its almost there) and is incredible online in a squad.

There was so much more in the final game than in the demo, it was definetly one of those games where the demo did the final game a real injustice.

Recommend it to any 360 owner on Live.

Despite beating Twilight Princess (and loving it, albeit easier than any Zelda I've played), playing a ton of DS releases this year (enjoyed a lot of those, too while disappointed slightly by others), playing a ton of GameCube (but mostly releases from before 2006), and playing a miniscule amount of PS2 games (they've been disappointing in my opinion on the most part although the good ones really are better than a lot of games I've played in my lifetime), I choose Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

Lots of the games I own are yester-year games and technically Subsistence was a game from the previous year (at least the Snake Eater portion), but damn... Greatest story ever told in a gaming series, I think. I was a fan of Metal Gear, but now I'm fanatical. And you get a lot of game for $30.

GoW - Fantastic, in every way.
CoD3 - Ditto.

Big Brain Academy on the DS. What a fantastically fun game, and I can beat the GF at it, hehe.

Oregon Trail will always be 1# in my heart.
World of Warcraft and FF7 are my most often played games.
With all this talk about xb360 I might have to actually consider getting one this year. Doesn't seem like the next gen console games are worth the spending yet.

I have them all (either in my room or my bro's!) 'cept the PSP.

Anyone noticed that TP has a certain attraction to non-gamers too? After the family had their excite-fess with Wii Sports I sat down to play some more on TP. My mum comes in and asks "so what would I do if I wanted to play this?" "stick in the disc, select Wii Game on the menu and don't go on my save file!".
Wii Sports is a gateway drug or something.

Despite its technical problems I'll have to say Tales of the Abyss for the PS2. Tales of Legendia also came out in 2006 but it wasn't nearly as good.

This may be something like a Halo or iPod effect if you are familiar with that, like you would buy a Mac computer because of the popularity of iPods and so on... this would be the Wii Sports effect, they are drawn by it and immediately feel curious about what the other games are like...

But I don't think TP will have an appeal for non gamers, they might end up trying it but I think most will walk away frustrated or dissapointed with the game.

My favourite game that I played in 2006 was Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the Gamecube. I'm not sure if it was released last year, but that's when I played it, so does that count? :)

PC- Call of Duty 2, Age of Empires 3, Rome: Total War & Expansion
Xbox- Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
Xbox 360-Saints Row, Call of Duty 3, and Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (I guess it'd be fair to mention those are the only 360 games I've played so far, but loved them none the less)

It's hard to pick an overall winner, but I'd have to say Oblivion

PS.

yes I am aware some of these are '05 games, hell Total is War '04 :p

Oblivion and Gears of War...

I have not wasted so much time on a game in my adult life.....

Oblivion for the 360 (thanks hunny for a REAL surprise at Xmas - go figure....)

and AOE III lived up to all the hype for the Mac.

From what I Can tell the Xbox 720 will come out before I can finish Oblivion....

NCAA 07 was better!

i didn't pick up a 360 til last week but my fave game of 2006 (playing on my bros system) was Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Las Vegas. That game totally blew me away with it's realism and graphics (OK OK it's not that real but it feels darn real on a 60" HDTV screen). I still haven't picked up a copy for mine yet (that whole money thing keeps getting in the way).

I am very impressed with the way the story unfolds and the way the gameplay evolves and is paced. Overall it's the best designed game I've seen for a long time. It's the best example of game crafting I've seen... though I'm only 7-8 hours into it.

Bydo Empire... ;) R-Type is probably my fave series of all time. games 1-3. :p
