View Full Version : Anyone up for a cheap B&W G3?

BillHarrison
Jan 5, 2007, 03:23 PM
Local craigslist guy has 6 available, for 100$. Problem is, I have to buy all 6, and dont have any use for that many.

All work, 300mhz, no HD, 1 stick of ram (Unknown, assume 32mb).

100/6 = 16.67 Each.

I want one. I would even buy 2 to get the deal done, so if anyone else wants a b&w G3 for 16.67 + shipping hit me up.

All have cd drives, type unknown. He is selling them as is, but I will test before shipping.

Kind of a B&W g3 group buy!

Wow. I didn't know that you could photograph, inspect, pad, box up, and ship two Power Macs for $13.33 a pop. That's a hell of a deal.

Wait a minute. If they're 300MHz, then that makes them Revision 1 Blue & Whites, right?

I don't mean to crap the thread, but Rev. 1 B&Ws should be avoided at all cost.

I see. Well, OP, let us know if these are Rev. 1 B&Ws. TiA.

No problem. I would assume these are Rev 1 units. For those who dont know, these have a mildly retarded onboard IDE controller. It only supports one device per cable, and even at that has a few issues with non-stock drives, a quick ebay search will yield you plenty of information.

That said, they are 16.00 each, and would probably do 50ish on ebay. They have plenty of PCI slots, so adding a "real" drive controller would not be tough. They are older machines, and thats that.

I am only charging real shipping to anyone intersted, so check yourself, my shipping zip is 44221.

I am not going to go through any exceptional amount of hassle for this, its just something I figured a few people might be interested in. If not, no problem.

Okay, well, if I assume the package will be 35lbs (the B&W's were 28lbs), by Parcel Post shipping should be $11.91. So. If you could ship me one for $30 total cost to me, I would take one.

Well,

I just checked @usps.com and got ~$17 for parcel post. Thats from OP's zip to mine, which is basically coast to coast! And I shipped a B&W to LA/CAL. last year & shipping was ~$13. I know shipping has went up lately, but it has NOT doubled. Also, I shipped 22 large, heavy gifts for xmas, w/o any real surprises ........

Hence my offer of $60 for 2 of them, which I will now increase to $70 :D

jlmk :)

Came out to $19.90 for me via Parcel post. Weight =35 lbs, shipping as a large package. I guess that'd be close to $40 for me. Hmm...

EDIT:

Anyways, I'm still interested.

I dont get why everyone says the Rev 1 is so bad. My Rev 1 took two hard disks, one WD and a Maxtor, for years with no problems, no corrpution, anything. o.O

Probably because even Apple admits (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24342)
that Rev. 1's can't handle slave hard drives (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58193).

Not to mention everyone else on the Intertubes screaming about it.

But I'm glad yours worked great. I'm sure somewhere out there is a guy who wonders why people complained so much about the Apple III :)

I've got two hard drives in my B&W and have for nearly 2 years. It works just fine. It must depend on the machine.

yea, some of the last ones off the production line got the new controller chip before they officially announced/made the revision, so there are a few hundred or so out there that actually work right :)

Nah, here I am. I have enough interest, will contact the seller to ensure they are still available, then purchase them. As long as all goes well, will post here later today to confirm and begin accepting payment.

BTW, here is the craigslist post in case anyone wants a pic, and no, the monitor is mine.

:D

I will contact him today and get this done.

I am waiting to see if I can get enough people interested, still missing a couple.
