View Full Version : RESOLVED!: Request for a  Smilie (NOT ?, Apple Logo)

skoker
Jan 9, 2007, 02:35 PM
I know that some computers, and all of our mobile, PC, and Linux, friends aren't able to make the :apple> symbol, and most computers in the world can't render it correctly from the internet anyways. Would it be possible to get a ':apple:' smilie to use it those occasions, esp. now with the release of the :apple:tv?

We could put it right under the :D and next to the :( *

Anybody else think this is a good idea?

*Depending on current Smilies local 299 contract/collective bargaining agreement.

I have no problem typing "Apple" versus (http://i12.tinypic.com/2igy8v6.png) and the Apple TV shouldn't matter.

But, I can see your point.

Being a Mac forum I think this makes sense, since the  is so unreliable.

Yes, it's getting pretty annoying since the release of the Apple TV that there's a million threads with a ? in place of the logo. I would welcome it.

tkidBoston, that's the exact issue, all the boxes and question marks that you see are Apple Logos, which is why the idea for an apple logo smiley is being surfaced.

I'm all for it personally.

Phew, and here I thought I was going nuts.

I would love to have a logo available that would be universal to everyone on this site. Anyone have any idea how difficult this would be to create?

In order to use the 'number' code, you must make sure *NOT* to preview your post. (Or, once you preview, replace the  with the number code again.)

This is because the board software turns the number code into an  even for a preview. Since the Mac OS understands this as a valid character, it displays the  in the preview edit box. But since the board software doesn't understand  it turns it into a question mark. That's also why when you type an  by doing shift-option-k, the board turns it into a question mark.

On a slight tangent, does anyone know of any way of typing the command logo other than switching to the unicode keyboard or trying to find it in Character Palette? Option, shift and control would be fanastic too.

This isn't just for this site, but also writing documents and posting elsewhere, (although I understand non-Mac users may still have problems displaying). It just gets frustrating having to type cmd/command and option/opt and people to ask what key that is every time. A keyboard shortcut that types command and option symbols by just pressing something similar to opt shift k would be great.

And before anyone suggests using the apple symbol instead of command, I don't want to use old Apple ][ legacy symbols for key pressing, they can remain for posting the apple logo.

The 'Edit' menu has a 'Special Characters' option (Command-Option-T,) that brings up the Character Palette. In there, under 'Symbols', then 'Technical Symbols' is the Command symbol (called 'PLACE OF INTEREST SIGN', for its European use,) along with all the other 'keyboard' symbols. Unfortunately, there is no keyboard shortcut for either one.

If using a Mac, the numeric code (without spaces) & # 8 9 8 4 ; produces command: ? on this board. Obviously, this only appears on a Mac, and is subject to the same limitations as typing the Apple logo, regarding not using preview, etc. (Option apparently does not work, apparently because it is only available in Lucida Grande Regular and Lucida Grande Bold.)

I happen to like "@TV"

Heh. Apple once had a TV appliance with @ in the name......

It was called the Apple Pippin, and Bandai made it under the name '@World'

Firefox on panther on a pb here, and most of this discussion has been complete gibberish to me.

Not nice to have something so broken on a top mac forum, we're letting the side down somewhat eh?

Suspect apple will be running into the same problems themselves now that the aTV has escaped their marketing dept.

I'm all for a new smiley, tho I predict apple will change the name again in a few months.

Ever noticed that the apple sign sits rather awkwardly next to the TV on the aTV box? Not quite their usual level of font tidiness.

Well, Apple does refer to it as both "tv" and "AppleTV" in their own marketing. Likewise, they refer to the phone as the "iPhone", paving the way for a name change to phone/ApplePhone, should the need arise. So for official Apple marketing, I imagine that tv is the preferred usage, but for typing out, or for websites and similar, they will use AppleTV. (I think the difference in capitalization is interesting, too. "tv" in lowercase with the logo, "TV" in uppercase with the word Apple.)

Interesting, the Apple symbol came through correctly in the above quote in my notification email telling me there was a new post in this thread.

I use Mail.app. Can other people clarify if it comes through properly in Eudora / Thunderbird (windows/osx) / Outlook etc?

Someone teach me how to do the Apple sign thingy, please!

As mentioned repeatedly throughout this thread, you type in the code & # 6 3 7 4 3 ; (all together though, no spaces,) and the board turns it into the Apple logo. What you are really doing is typing an HTML code for "Unicode character 63743", which, on a Mac, is the Apple logo. But, since this *IS* a valid character on a Mac, if you preview your post before posting, the Apple logo will appear in your text editing window. And the BOARD doesn't know what to make of the Apple logo, so it replaces it with a question mark. By using the "&#number;" notation, you are essentially bypassing the board software. (Where "board" means forums.macrumors.com)

And a shortcut for use in any Mac application is to type option-shift-k. That won't work here, though, for the reasons mentioned above.

So, to recap:

& # 6 3 7 4 3 ; (without spaces) = 

(I'm even attaching a screenshot showing exactly what I typed to get the above line.)
