View Full Version : How well is the PS3 really doing?

Apparently, Sony is doing a lot better than I expected. Best Buy's online and store pickups are sold out. It was only a week ago when they started selling them online too. I wonder when they're getting another shipment in?

On a side note, Blue-ray also seems to be taking off. It's just now starting to outsell HD-DVD. So which one would you go for at this point? Personally, I'd go for Blue-ray. I like their casings better and they're starting to have a promising lineup of movies for the next year.

I usually don't like to get my facts from sources like that. For example, never trust a wii game review from Nintendo power, etc.
I think we still have a while before a solid front-runner shows.

All I can say is PS3 looks like rectangular crap. If it doesnt sell well I would blame its looks if you can call them that. A 0 on the 1-10scale, 360 gets a 1.

Yeah I usually don't trust sites like that either. To be honest, I hate both disc formats. There should have been just one format...
This site seems to be a bit more accurate on sales.
http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/
So we still don't know the actual sales data of both formats as of now. Since I have a PS3, I'd have to stick with Blue-ray just because I don't wanna spend another $600 for an HD-DVD player. :-\ I'm just glad the PS3 plays Blue-rays extremely well and it's snappy too. :-D Once the good games start coming out, I'm going to be glad I got a PS3. I was contemplating between getting a 360 and a PS3, but I chose the PS3 just because of the titles that it'll be receiving, and because of wide Japanese developer support.

Haha I think they both look equally bad. I think the shiny luster on the PS3 gives it a slight edge against the 360 though. But I like my Wii better than both. It's small and sleek. :D

Yeah, but I also really don't like dual-sided discs. :p
I just hope Blu-ray isn't going to lose the format wars. I think it's better than HD-DVD. Well, on paper it's a fact. But I like how Blu-ray sounds. HD-DVD just sounds like a mouthful. Not only that, but I put my money on the PS3, so now I have to stick with it.

I went to my local Best Buy today. They had 8 PS3s on the shelf and a friend who works there said they had several more cases in the back that they weren't putting out because nobody was buying them. I'm thinking maybe by next Christmas I will want to pick up a PS3. Unless more devolopers start making their games for both PS3 and 360, then I will have no need to get the PS3.
The Wii on the other hand, still haven't seen a single system just sitting on a shelf. They seem to sell out the day they come in on a truck.

Wii launched with Zelda, a game GC fans have been waiting on for a year and a half.
I am telling you sales will slow, and then Nintendo with have to offer something else to continue such trends.
Ps3 sales will not see such surges until a decent price drop and a premier title(like Zelda for Wii)

-Blu-ray has 96% of the HD player market in Japan. "In terms of Japan the game is already over there."
-Out of 10,000 registered PS3 owners surveyed, 90% have tried and will buy Blu-Ray discs. 75% plan to use their PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player.
-On December 20th, Blu-Ray sales finally surpassed HD-DVD sales (note: no word on if this is players or software)
-Mission Impossible 3 was one of the best selling BD titles. In order, Underworld Evolution, Talladega Nights, Fifth element, Click , and Ultraviolet were the top sellers in the Sony camp.
Blu-ray is on its way to winning the "war", although once Blu-ray really ramped up there really wasnt much resistance from HD-DVD.

True dat. I bought the Wii ONLY for Zelda. There's nothing else on the system worth getting. As for the PS3, Fall of Man owns, especially online play.
Sales for the PS3 will surge once a title like Gran Turismo is released. And that's going to be AMAZING. The demo already tells us that development is going well. The visuals and controls are outstanding. I can't wait for it to come out! Not only that, but the final version is going to be even better than the demo. :D

Ahh, nice find. I didn't know that sales had way surpassed HD-DVD in Japan. But then again, Japan is always going towards the latest technologies, not "extensions" of old technology, hence the extension "HD" to DVD. But I'd like to think that people would always do research before buying a new product anyway. The only thing that gives HD-DVD an edge is the name, but that's it. The rest is straight-up Blu-ray's edge.

That's one reason I didn't buy a Wii, and neither did my friend. He was pissed when they delayed Zelda another year to "make it better" and all they wanted to do was sell it with the Wii. On top of that it comes out for GC a month later? This is even lamer than Sony's "shipped" habit.

I wanted Mario Galaxies as well, but there is no official release date yet(which worries me) Its also one reason I sold my Wii(though I will buy it again)
Nintendo will do decent in during quiet months by releasing "classics," but I honestly think that will merely help make them profits(from existing Wii owners) - not actually cause more Wii sales.
Online-Gaming will help tremendously, but they need more titles than just Metroid to make more dents.
*again I am not saying they can't/won't - merely speculating on what can/should be done*

Haha I know right! I was pissed off too. I ended up buying both the Wii and the GC version. I wish they would have made them both with the same features though, because the GC version lacks 16:9 support, which really pissed me off. Or what they could have done is give you an option to use the GC controller in the Wii version. I think swinging the nunchuk and Wiimote back and forth just to slash gets old.
Oh well, if you're a true Zelda fan, you'd buy both versions...Because there is one thing that sets both versions apart: the game is flipped horizontally. So it feels like you're playing an entirely new game...

From link,
One retailer spoke to me on condition of anonymity, and broke down his version of the situation. "It's not that we've gotten more PS3s than Wiis, it's just that no one wants them. We've seen a few returned. We have four in the store right now," he said. He also told of people coming in with multiple systems and no receipts, looking for cash back after their eBay listings failed to gather attention. "If you told me that I would have PS3s to sell and that I won't be able to get enough Wiis back in October, I would have laughed at you," he went on. He also detailed a memo from a regional vice president telling managers to put up a hand-written note telling customers that the PS3 is in stock.

This just makes it easier for "early adapoters" to get one, and not pay an arm and/or a leg.
Sales will surge later(with a price drop and/or premier title), you can quote me if you like too.

I went to a Best Buy today, not really planning on buying anything specific. While browsing, I asked an employee if they had any Wiis available, thinking I'd buy one on the off chance that they did. She explained that they were sold out of Wiis, but encouraged me to buy a PS3, saying that they "had a whole pallete of them sitting in the store". Sure enough, there were about twenty just sitting there.

But to the point of this thread, if people don't start buying PS3's it doesn't matter if 100% of owners buy blu-ray.
Once Sony starts rolling out the big guns the PS3 will sell fine. But until then MS and Nintendo will keep building their leads while PS3's collect dust. I think that with lineup 360 has for 2007 (seriously, have you seen how many sick games are coming out?) the 10MM unit headstart might grow to more like 15MM.
Plus attachment will be a problem for dual console households. If the games look the same and you have PS3 and 360, which system are you going to buy Madden 2009 on? Obviously the one with better online system. Which is why I'll probably never buy a PS3 unless Sony shows me something it can do that my 360 doesn't already (I'm not spending $700 for 5% better graphics).

I've never really liked the Xbox, although I do buy all consoles, because there are certain exclusives that come out to each console that I'd like to own. I'm waiting for Halo 3 on the 360. Yeah, like a few people have said, once a real killer app is out for it, sales will start taking off. The only people that will buy the console now are early adopters, or eletronics enthusiasts who want to use it as a Blu-ray player. And that's really the advantage of the PS3 at this point, is the fact that it blends in several markets with its capabilities. Once there's plenty of triple A games and movies out, we'll probably see the PS3 catch up on momentum.

One. Because its been under development since the original God of War came out, its a PS2 game, heck it might have even begun development before PS3 development kits were distributed and the PS2 and PS3 are pretty different beasts.
Two (and this is the biggest reason). The PS2 has a much larger userbase, imagine being able to sell your game to 60 million people as opposed to what... 800000 tops for the PS3? Remember, people want to make money as opposed to make life better for everyone... the fact that patents exists make this evident.

True, because the thing that kept the PS2 from dying when the Dreamcast was out was backwards compatibility and they still made games for the PSone even a year and a half after the PS2 had launched. I remember most of the PS2 launch titles looked like crap (oh yeah, when compared to Dreamcast launch titles, it looked WORSE, except for maybe SSX). And people still bought the PS2. The PS2 is still going strong, so it'd be really retardid for companies to abandon the PS2. They'll keep supporting it until the PS3 has some killer apps and a decent installed base.

LOL!
it took them a WEEK to sell out? The Xbox 360 was selling so quickly, you didnt see it online until 4 months later! And then when it finally did come back on, it sold out in less than a couple minutes, not including there was down time because the website crashed from people trying to get their hands on the order.
The Wii hasnt even seen light of day online because the demand is too high that BestBuy is just doing what they did for the Xbox, just sending it to the stores rather than doing it online.
This is terrible indication as how well the PS3 is selling. It does not surprise me. No good games = No sale
And please understand the Xbox are NOT loud because of the GPU. It is loud because of the DVD drive. The ones coming off the assembly liine now do not use that old drive any longer and are using a new one which are much quieter.

Unless GameStop, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Circuit City all merged into one megastore the article mentions 4 retail chains, not one retailer.
It also goes on to say, "It's not the case that the PS3 isn't selling well, however. One store manager revealed that they have sold 24 of 28 launch units, and most others who would talk to us told similar tales. Sales are strong; they're simply not as strong as many expected..."

This is true, I just bought the Xbox360 at Christmas time and it is ultra silent when nothing is in the drive. But when I put a game in and play it sounds just like my Powermac G5 when I put a DVD in that.
The xbox360 is the first Microsoft product I've ever owned, and now that I've been playing it about 2 weeks I'm loving the machine 10x more than I thought I would. I highly recommend it for any gamer. I bought the Wii too but I got bored with it quick.
The PS3 really needs a major price drop and a few must own games before that system takes off. Probably in another 2 years that will happen, which is good since Sony has long term plans anyway with the PS3.

We got a ton of the 60GB machines in stock today (around 40+), and we only sold 2. And we had 16 signs on the doors, and then signs in EACH department saying we had them in-stock, on a table with the games, and accessories, and the machines with 20 balloons tied to the table legs. One was for a guy who was wanting to buy it, and the other was used to replace a guys broken PS3, apparently Madden 07 after an hour was getting all choppy and laggy on the machine. I feel sorta bad for Sony, and then I dont, because when you start to price a game console thats MORE expensive than a computer, you have a bit of a problem. Every other high-priced console has failed. Hopefully our Home Theater department will be able to clear our stock by selling them as cheap Blu-Ray players.
I do think Blu-Ray looks nicer than HD-DVD.

Xbox 360 is hands down THE system to own both now and (at least) for the next year. Why? The games, stupid  ;) Anyone can go out and purchase a 360 system and have 10+ RFoM or Zelda quality titles available to play now, and as another poster mentioned before, the 360 line-up for 2007 is absolutely increadible. What really keeps us coming back to this topic when everyone knows the PS3's (theoretical) potential won't be realized for 1-2 years and until then there is another box of the X variety that does the same thing better for less money? If you don't like it, return it and get your precious movie playing PS3, because you won't be playing many games on it.
Yep, I said it...

X-Box 360 has Microsoft's history of crap software and pushing competition out when they are fully entrenched.
PS3 has Sony's record of treating consumers like crap, rootkit CDs, etc.
The X-Box 360 looks better than the PS3 at this point; I just don't trust Microsoft. They lost me a long time ago.

Couple of things.
Zelda quality? Righty. Zelda is currently the next gens highest rated game. So if we're talking quality then we're only talking of "lower than Zelda" quality. But hey the games been in making for friggin years and they've answered to what people have been wanting since OoT so its sorta expected.
360 line up for 2007 incredible? hmm. I might be looking at the list upside down or in Chinese. I can't find a game I like! They're all stuck in the similar genre, Lost Planet, Halo 3, etc. As I've said before where's my whimsical adventure? Where's my racing game that doesn't take itself too seriously (and isn't made by EA, urgh)?
Funny thing is I want a 360 too. I've bought some parts for it already and have my eyes set on some games (not incredible ones, just ones I'd pay £19.99 for). My webcam is sat here complete with 12 months of Live Gold too... waiting...
360 is bloody mint. It's just full of genres I'm not too keen on and franchises that have yet to prove themselves.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I have all major platforms. I like my PS3 but pretty much I only play 2 games Resistance and Fightnight R3, I mostly only use it as a Blu Ray which it does very well. I haven't been impressed with the games yet but I know a year from now it will be very good. I love my XBOX 360 and use it about 70% of the time and mostly with Gears of War. I also have the Wii and I really like it but I only use it when I have people over. All in all the PS3 is a great machine with a lot of potential but it hasn't wowed me yet but I have hope. I remember when I got the XBOX 360 I felt the same way. It wasn't until Ghost Recon that I was really excited and then Gears totally blowed me away.
Something to note though, Lately when I have gone to the stores they all seem to have 1 or 2 PS3's (20Gig) on the shelves but no Wii's.

360 line up for 2007 incredible? hmm. I might be looking at the list upside down or in Chinese. I can't find a game I like!
360 is bloody mint. It's just full of genres I'm not too keen on and franchises that have yet to prove themselves.
That second quoted paragraph seems pretty telling, you seem to be looking at the franchises and deciding you don't like the game because you're not interested in the franchise, because it hasn't been "proven."
It's unlikely you've played many (if any) of the games on the list, but somehow you can still say you don't like them. I know people that never played Half-Life because of that attitude.
When I look at the list I also consider the people behind the games, what other games they've made. I think 2007 indeed looks excellent for 360. Even tossing in Live Arcade, releases like Castlevania SotN, Worms HD (a new 2D Worms), and The Incredible Machine 2007 to games like Dark Sector (Digital Extremes), Haze (Free Radical, makers of TimeSplitters 1&2), BioShock (from makers of System Shock), Alan Wake (from makers of Max Payne), Stranglehold (Max Payne+John Woo), and even Half-Life 2 (Original, Ep1, Ep2, TF2, and Portal)... the Guitar Hero 2 port, XBLA Tetris, and of course... Assassin's Creed.
I'm actually really, really, looking forward to a new 2D Worms game on XBLA.

SCEA dominated this x-mas overall with the strongest sales in both hardware and software
SCEA tallied total sales of $1.61 billion:
-more than 2.8 million units of hardware
-more than 22.4 million units of software
-6.9 million peripherals sold.
besting the next closest company's total retail sales dollars by nearly 40%.
December 2006 was only the third time total first- and third-party sales for an individual company have exceeded $1.6 billion, records previously set by SCEA in December 2001 and 2002.

I'm aware of that, but as far as consoles go, they are exclusive to the 360. I'm just trying to show that, when waffling between the 360 and PS3, there is so much to look forward to on the cheaper, better established 360 in terms of gaming. Computers vs Consoles are a whole new thread :)

The established is the part right now. It took almost a year for the 360's 'killer app' to arrive. Frankly for me Gow is ok but its nothing spectacular (I liked vegas, graw, and oblivion much better). PS3 will have its day as well - don't forget people still like final fantasy, gran tourismo, and metal gear(until its confrmed for 360 I still consider this a PS3 exclusive). Wii still has yet to release mario and metroid.
on a side note I am salivating for the opportunity to finally play castlevania symphony of the night

Well said. Yes, right now 360 has MORE games to choose from. But guess what? It's because the 360 has been out longer. Wait another 6 months, and then maybe the heat will really start up. PS3 will definitely have some killers app coming soon, and what's really going to sell the PS3 is Gran Turismo. Metroid is going to sell Wiis. Halo 3 will get more 360s in houses.
So the market's big enough for any of the consoles, and I think we might see sales equalize, instead of having a "winner". I also think that each system targets different audiences. So there you have it, who cares about which has more games, it's the exclusives that matter for each console. :D

There was a statistic pointed out in another thread that 75% of people questioned who bought a PS3 - said they did so for watching movies on only.
Ed H posted this - and he is a big time Sony fan.
This is not good news for Sony. They get their profit from software / games on PS3 (which is sold like the 360 at a loss)
If people arent buying games they are losing a lot of revenue, added that the contention ratio (amount of games sold per console) will remain fairly low if most are using it to watch movies on.
This in turn is why a lot of developers will refrain from making games exclusive. And this in turn could make gamers refrain from buying a PS3 when exclusive titles are suddenly shifting format.
So in this sense, BluRay may have helped sell PS3 intially - but in the long run it may be hurting it. :o

Luckily for Sony they finally have some good franchises of their own. If they didn't they'd have no real power to make a "solid" gaming platform, they'd have to rely on 3rd parties which are less likely to make exclusive content as they used to.
We'll see if their titles alone can garner them the popularity they have had in the past. Especially if more games go multi-platform (like FF or MGS). Dragon Quest 9 going to DS rather then PS2/PS3 is pretty bad for them in Japan. That series is more popular then FF. IIRC, the release of DQ8 for PS2 had sales of 2M in the first 24 hours.

the 360 keeps the tradition in japan even though they have increased thanks to blue dragon
here the sales from 1.1 to 7.1
and second number is the total number of consoles sold
Nintendo DS Lite 344.878 7.768.202
Wii 195.331 1.114.974
PlayStation Portable 118.186 4.650.315
PlayStation 3 69.944 527.502
PlayStation 2 52.037 20.206.896
Xbox 360 18.235 282.937
Gameboy Micro 3.311 563.241
Gameboy Advance SP 2.364 5.917.404
GameCube 1.258 4.170.726
Nintendo DS 75 6.582.430
Gameboy Advance 57 8.823.166
thankfully it is works out a lot better for the 360 outside of japan, where the 1 year head start pulverized within the first week
in the software charts the first 15 titles are all for DS(11)/Wii(4) ...

Total US sales:
PS2 = 19,797,685
XBOX = 9,941,702
360 = 3,401,157
Xbox failed to do much of anything(except build a fanbase and a few franchises for the 360)
NOTE: thats not a flame, its merely how I see the success of xbox
PS2 is still outselling 360 month to month, for the entire year - so I am pretty sure Sony is not yet worried about PS3 sales.

In terms of gaming, both platforms are going to deliver well. All I'm trying to do by making a list of upcoming 360 games is show that this year is going to be as good if not better than anything the PS3 will offer. In my first post I said the PS3 has a lot of potential, but it won't be realized for a few years. So in terms of what to buy now if you want a guarantee to be gaming well for the next couple of years, then the 360 is a way better short term (next 1-2 years) choice because of the amazing games already out, and for the amazing 2007 line-up yet to come.
In 1-2 years we will need to reevaluate the 'best buy' console, but for now there's no question: 360...which is pretty obvious to the market.

So true it hurts. I also passed by my local BB and they said they had 20 that nobody was buying plus 2 returns.
On the Wii they (BB) haven't got any since xmas. Target , Circuit City and even the Nintendo World Store in Manhattan (passed by a couple of times) don't have any -They never say when was the last time they got a shipment .

They require a memory card, and a second Sony controller. So, they get to sell the PS2 for 109, the memory card for 15-20, and the controller for another 15-20 used.
Still, I think I'd much rather keep my Playstation 2 than upgrade.

Japan is not a good place to judge which format will win the "war" in the entire world, simply because so many people there only buy Japanese brands.
Japanese companies supporting Blu-ray: Sony, Sharp, Mitsubishi Electric, TDK, Pioneer, and Panasonic, plus Apple, which is rather successful in Japan, for a foreign company. Japanese companies supporting HD-DVD: Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo.

They require a memory card, and a second Sony controller. So, they get to sell the PS2 for 109, the memory card for 15-20, and the controller for another 15-20 used.
Still, I think I'd much rather keep my Playstation 2 than upgrade.
This is a pretty slick business move, not a "i need to get rid of my PS3's cuz omgwtfbbq teh are the suxxorz and not selling" like the OP of that post would like to lead us to think.

Kinda like X360's then right? I always see piles and stacks of X360's in stores. Oh wait, the PS3 outsold the X360 US launch... It's failing though
The PS3 is failing as much as the X360 is, take it from there. It's preference, right now X360 has the software, its been out for a year longer i hope it would. But just as people say that the PS3 is losing exclusives, so is the X360, Saints Row is coming to the PS3, whats next who know, and who cares.
The PS3 isn't dying or going the way of Sega, and i doubt Sony will finish this gen at anything under #1, but then thats my opinion. I will be here to say I told you so when it happens :D

I agree, if they pull off #1 i think it will be a much tighter race than it was with the PS2. There is no doubt that M$ has put more thought in to their X360, Nintendo has a innovative product, all around the competition has stepped up their game. It will be interesting to see who is where in 1-2 years, Gran Tourismo and FFXIII will be huge system sellers, I still think that Sony will not be taken out from #1, i just think it may be a bit tighter of a race. My gut feeling is for Nintendo to take #2, X360 drops back to #3, while Sony remains in #1.
Time will tell, otherwise we are all just spinning our wheels :D

Personal opinion and the one I've always stated.
Regardless of what mistakes Sony does & doesnt make this gen, they will end up number 1.
But their 70% market share will no longer exist. It will have balanced out.
I think were talking 37/33/30 kind of scenario percentage wise.
All three will be very close and I think there will be a lot of hustle between all of them postering over who is actually ahead at any given period.
The real battle will really be the next generation again as all three will be starting from the same kind of market position.

This summer the ps3 will have a pretty strong line up. Resistance is not bad at all and Fight Night Round 3 is really amazing. So far only Resistance use multithreading for the physics with 1 of the 7 extra cores. The potential is awesome, and this summer their will already be a good choice of games.
They cannot fail with a machine this strong. And, you have to face it, whatever technology get released for pc (like physics processors) the ps3 will remain a beast for at least the next 5 years.

Its a big industry and all 3 companies will be winners no matter how many units have been sold. People should spend their time comparing stuff that actually matters and makes a difference and stop starting needless wars about every subject they can think off.

the lack of rumble is truly pathetic for a 600 dollar system and say what you want but RFoM is decent but its nothing great.
I finally got to pick up a Wii this week and love this little thing. Its super quiet, zelda is amazing, & Wii sports has everyone having a great time.

I was in a local mall today looking for a Wii (which is sold out, of course) and I asked the manager if they had any PS3's. His answer was "haha, are you kidding? We have a stack in the back from 3 weeks ago that we can't sell. Please buy one, haha!"
Apparently they can't sell the shipment they get each week but Sony keeps sending them more units, so the things are starting to pile up.
I've been to a couple of other stores and seen plenty of PS3's. Anyone who can't find one should call any electronics/game store in the Louisville area.
Also of note, the PS3 kiosk was frozen/off while 6-8 people were crowding around the Wii watching Zelda. The 360 had 2 guys playing Madden.

I saw a kid playing Zelda on a Wii at Gamestop next to another kid playing the MotorStorm demo. The motorstorm kid was having a blast steering with the motion sensing control while the Wiimote was obviously broken. The kid was getting visibly frustrated with it. To make things even better, the kid playing with the ps3 was probably 8 and the kid playing Zelda had to have been at least 13.
All in all, the ps3 isn't going to do anything until some really great games come out for it. I'm awaiting a few good games by March but things will really heat up by the year's end. I remember for months after the 360 launched seeing tons of systems sitting there with very few games available. It happens. The only advantage the 360 has is that it's had time to build up its library, and that'll come to an end.
I stand by the original statement that the Wii's focus on motion-sensing will wear off anyway, and will become a novelty. I'm sure they'll sell 1 or 2 million more consoles than the GameCube and we'll all laugh at them.
That said I'll still get one for Brawl.

Well I think you should be a little fair, the lack of rumble is because of the tilt function, so your point is not valid, you might like rumble better but you have tilt instead.
How can you hate a console because of a controller? I thought we played them because of games, I find it hard to believe you got REAL cramps from a Dual Shock.

Myself included. I'm sure you could find several posts from me on the subject. It works great as a 2D controller, it's a horrible 3D controller. But what do you expect? It started as a nice 2D controller for PS1, then when N64 introduced the thumbsticks, which were obviously better for 3D, they "tacked on" a couple analog thumbstics to their 2D controller.
Controls for me can make or break a game, it can take an awesome game and make it frustratingly average. Have any of you ever tried to play the PC version of MGS2? Wow is it bad, the control configuration is so terrible it makes the game almost worthless.
Coded-Dude: I believe what he was saying was the Sony paid the required fees for rumble in PS1, but refused to pay for it for PS3 and instead tossed in tilt.

Never said I hated the dualshock did I ?
Also there is more to a controller than button layout. The ergonomoics and weight/balance of the controller is completely different between the two, and I think the 360 feels better in the hand.
Also I prefer the position of the left analogue stick on the 360 over the dual shock which I feel is too close to it's neighbour.
As for dual shock, Logitech make a beautiful wireless PS2 pad that also feels far more comfortable than the sony one, even though its button layout is the same.

The PS3 was released a year too early. In 12 months, I guess the system will be drenched in titles, and it's certainly got it's fair share of killer apps on the horizon.
Providing I can pick one up when I'm in China in September, I think I'll go with the PS3 over 360 and Wii - I've never had a Sony console before, and not had any console for years, but MGS4 and FFXIII are just totally pushing my buttons.

I really like the PS controller for 2D games, as I said. But for 3D games I DO hate it, and consider it the worst 3D controller I have probably ever used.
It *IS* all about the ergonomics and buttons layout for a controller. The 360 controller is probably my favorite standard controller. It's shape is nice and comfortable, the sticks feel good, the button layout is natural, and the weight is just right.
With the PS controller the problem is the analog stick placement. Sure, if you play a LOT of PS1/2 you get used to them but the truth is they force your thumbs at an odd angle, while the D-Pad sits in the "primary" location, which doesn't make sense when most games are 3D now.
The PS controller is well built, solid, the buttons are nice and the analog sticks are quality. But the design is neither natural nor comfortable without extended use to "get used to it", Sony obviously hasn't done much ergonomic research.
Coded-Dude
Jan 16, 2007, 12:22 PM
I think the banana phone was a great step in the direction of ergonomics, but Sony let that go in favor of whining fanboys that thought the new design was "ugly."

i'm in the same boat .. i simply can't play for longer periods .. my left thumb starts hurting because when pushing the analog stick to the right i simply have to extend it too much
that's why i use the dpad when possible .. which by itself is hardly ideal simply because it is seperated (at least compared to nes-snes)

Add me to the camp that doesn't like the PS controller. My favorite controllers are the 360, Xbox s-controller, and Dreamcast (anyone see a pattern? ;)). Compared to those controllers there's pretty much nothing I like about the PS controller. I don't like the PS controller's "segmented" d-pad, the feel or the location of the analog sticks, the shoulder buttons/attempts at triggers, or the feel/tactile feedback of the buttons under my right thumb.

Personally I think that's a bit presumptuous. We really don't know how much freedom he has or how much time they really give him.
It's true that doing exclusive software can put you in the lime light, but that doesn't actually mean the software is better because it's exclusive. In fact many games get more attention then they deserve because they are exclusive and thus get more promotion, especially if they are first party.
Put him with a company like Valve or Blizzard and it's possible he would have even more freedom. Software being multi-platform doesn't necessarily make it worse so long as enough time to finish the software is allowed and the other developers know what they are doing (and care about each platform).
Look at Blizzard, they've done PC/Mac software for a very long time and they usually work just the same on both systems, and work great.

and a surprise announcement that may lead to a launch price drop, since you guys/girls had to wait.

Not looking likely. IF TRUE, they have already leaked a general price increase for europe to €629 for the 60gb version (up from €599) which means Ireland will probably be €649-669 at least.
:(
60gb PS3 + Call of Duty 3 I can order from Canada DVDboxoffice for €588.

actually the 629 is the price for ireland
but i don't buy the VAT explanation
after all the VAT in austria is 20% only 1 percent below ireland .. and germany has a 19% VAT and the ps3 will be sold at 599 here

Is it ? Are you sure.
360 Premium was €409 here and Wii €269
IGN's leaked report seems to indicate €629 is an increase to the general european price not talking about Ireland specifically. Hence if true Ireland will see a further 30 price increase on the 630.
currently, both 60GB and 20GB models appear to have increased by 30 Euros - at 629.99 EUR and 529.99 EUR respectively.
But your right. Ireland is ripped off and the VAT thing is BS :(

Sony has confirmed the higher price is for Ireland only, due to its higher VAT rate. The 60GB PS3 is still set at EUR 599 for the rest of Europe, GBP 425 for the UK.

Thanks SkyBlue.
What a load of BS though. As Takao already pointed out Germany has practically identical vat rate.
Still I expected it as all of them (Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo) rip ireland off regardless.

Surely there must be some lot in the E.U. that we can complain to MRU if its obvious that we're paying exorbitant charges? We clearly are being unjustly ripped off here!

If only lad, I dont think Bertie or Biffo are going to come to our rescue.
My theory is it all a conspiracy and it a secret "keep Mary Harney supplied with cake" tax ;) :D

An update on how well Sony is doing in Japan:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/01/19/ps3/index.php
Apparently their sales in Japan were pretty low in the first half of January. They're still doing better than the 360, but without any killer app, people seem to be holding off on buying the console right now. And because everyone is broke from Christmas. We'll see what happens in the next few months.

Yeah they are surprising. (Well 360 is never going to do the business in Japan, not this generation by any means anyway) But it does seem that the Japanese are holding out on the PS3 which surprises me.
And yet they have 'Motorstorm' and 'R:FOM' the big two so far, so it's still surprising.
I knew the DS Phenomenon would rub off on the Wii and its sales are about 4 -1 against the PS3 and yet it really only has same amount of games.
I've always said it's how a system sells after Xmas that is important.
Other problem PS3 has is other big name games like Tekken 5, have already been done on PS2 & PSP, with chance that Tekken players will have already played it to death on the other formats and are unlikely to be pursuaded to spend lots of $$ on buying it again.
It's needs to get somthing original, somthing quirky and somthing very Japanese out there fast. But rushing a game to market to try and sell consoles isnt great for the gamer either.
And they should stop all talk of another PS3 / PSX2 hybrid, I dont think that's helping.
I'm just not sure Sony really know what the consumer wants anymore and that is there biggest problem so far. I think they've oversold to themselves the importance of BluRay and movies - and forgot that its a 'games' system.
I still hope they launch in Europe with Lair & Warhawk but it's not looking likely. I'll be picking one up anyway, but hey ho - there ye go.

Yeah they can't do anything but move on at this point. All the jibberish about value is not going to help. I mean, it is a great value, but it's still expensive to the average user. The early adopters will help drive the cost down. All I'd like to say is that they should be pushing the 20 GB model, and release a killer app at least by March. I think they should have released Motorstorm in March in Japan, when the game is actually finished and has online play. But instead, they rushed it out instead.
Otherwise everyone is going to be picking up a Wii instead of PS3 or 360 in Japan.

Haha same here. I guess it depends on where you live. It seems if you're living in a wealthy area, people are able to get a PS3. Otherwise, people are probably saving up and waiting until great games start appearing on the platform. And besides, if you have a PS2, you have no reason to upgrade yet, as there is still a steady flow of great titles coming for it. :D

Very true, as evident by it practically outselling everything else still this xmas.
I think your right fiercetiger they do need to push the 20gb version more. It's the one I'd actually go for, and yet its practically non available. They are even talking of not releasing the 20gb model at all in Europe.
