I played the demo for a while. I found it hard to get into. It is a fully online demo, if you have live give it a try. I don't plan on buying it, unless it becomes huge, in which case I will feel obligated to buy it, like Halo 2, which I do not truly enjoy, I just play so I can compete against my friends.

yes this game looks great. I preordered it so hopefully it'll be here soon (don't normally preorder but I got $10 off Viva Pinata so couldn't resist). I don't play very many shooters but the third person adventure aspect of this game bought me. And also, to the guy above, there is a one player demo also not just the multiplayer (its a separate download though).

Yes, I can't wait. I pre-ordered it and picking up tomorrow. It is supposed to come with a Vital Suit action figure. Not a big deal but its free.

I absolutely loved the single player demo, I thought it was amazing when it first came out. I was really looking forward to trying the multiplayer demo, but once I got it, I wasn't into it as much as I hoped I would have been. I don't know why, just something didn't feel right.

The only thing that disappoints me about this game is the fact that there is no co-op mode for the campaign. I really have come to find that to be my favorite part about shooters, being able to play with my roommates or friends online. Gears of War got it perfect, I was hoping for something similar. I'm surprised that co-op isn't standard on games now, it just adds that much more replay value to the game.

I know the game with be great, but my excitement has been a little deflated since the so-so multiplayer demo and lack of co-op. I'll still end up getting it, but probably not right away.

Give me a shout/invite when you see me online with it. I loved the demo's.

Should be a killer game.

Famitsu Magazine seemed to really go for it - surprising

Japanese game mag Famitsu had just finished its Lost Planet review. The magazine tested out both single player and multi-player. Four editors reviewed the game on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the best), and here's what they had to say:

1) Cool that it feels like a big-budget sci-fi movie. You'll need to keep collecting Thermal Energy to stay alive, so you'll have to stay in the action at all times. If you find the game too hard, swallow your pride and play it on Easy mode. Playing against players from around the world looks like fun. SCORE = 9

2) Plays pretty much like an orthodox FPS game. The game balance lets you play through the game without much stress. Very inventive in that you have your human weapons and Vital Suit weapons, and you can use them all on foot. The slower movements of the hefty Vital Suits balance out their overwhelming firepower and add to the tension. SCORE = 9

3) From the realism of the snow and air in the environments to the battles that really put you in the middle of the action, this game has it all. Battles against giant enemies and robots are super-exciting. May take some people a little time to get used to the unique controls and gameplay concepts. Story plays out well, with twists and turns throughout the experience. Online multiplayer seems a bit bland, but it's fun to play nonetheless. SCORE = 9

4) Despite the weapon balancing being fine-tuned with the multiplayer in mind, the story mode truly is a blast! Battles with creatures in the extreme conditions are intense and very challenging. The bosses are big, and the pattern-recognition style of boss-conquering is very rewarding. SCORE = 9

For once I beat everyone to the goal with this one :p got it yesterday.

It really is like any other WarioWare. Quick to complete, easy, insanely fun. My mum didn't understand it at all, then again she came to that conclusion from watching the Disco guys intro animation.
The games are great, the controls work perfectly. The mini games are absurdly addictive. Multiplayer has to be unlocked (beat single player). Best title music ever, IMO.

But it definitely won't be for everyone. The absurdity of the series peaks in this one.

edit : I apologize in advance for bad grammar and spelling, but I'm trying to type and play the game at the same time. Damn I wish I was an octopus ;)

Initial Impressions

When starting the game you are prompted to update - so I did that straight away

Menu system is minimal.

Starting new campaign

Intro is a mix of in-game engine cut-scene and narration with a few still images.

Graphically this is WOW. utterly amazing with some of the best explosions and ricochet (similar to fears), All the effects, focus, blur, bloom & HDR all rendered to impressive effect at 1080i

Audio through out is amazing score. Really cinematic orchestral opus.

Then the game starts.

Graphically its the same as the cut-scenes so you know its all good. With great reflection, anti aliasing etc.

Now to mention the game is NOT easy, even on easy. I'm playing normal but it tough cookie, but not as frustratingly so as GOW

No major spoiler here as its only the first 5-6 mins ;)

Your inside a base with your team. and pretty soon if your fighting the beasts from the intro.

You enter a room and it opens and it looks like a city - massive. You shoot a few flying creatures and nests, all of sudden the ground shakes. You turn around and

The game is explosive, with some of the most impressive booms and bangs in a game.

So far about 1 hour in - its hot. (for a game set in the cold ;) )

Story is compelling.

Definitely if you like action games, pick this up.

Certainly as impressive as GOW, but I prefer the game-play here to GOW.

A proper review shall follow, but its looking like a serious contender here folks for game of 2007 and we've only just begun.

MacRumorUser
Jan 12, 2007, 01:43 PM
Single player demo has 2 levels. 1 is the same level as on the multiplayer demo.

The other is actually the first mission in the retail version. The first mission has some new features not in the demo one.

Also they have tightened up controls It feels really intuitive now, I thought the demo was a bit clunky. not sure what they have done exactly, maybe make it more responsive ?

---

co-op - unfortunetly none for the main story.

But 2-16 player online arena modes,

Will play multiplayer later when more people on my FL report in :)

Update.

I love the transforming mechs. I love the fact you can detach their guns when the mechs are damaged or change them when ammo runs out.

I'm only on Mission 3 - its a tough level with somthing VERY impressive that's big & long ;)

Mission 2 took me around 49 minutes to complete and the second level of the single player demo, is merely a small section of this mission two.

My roommate bought it, mostly for the multiplayer because he really got into the mech combat in the multiplayer demo. But alas, we can't play together in multiplayer on the same machine. A real drag. Unless we are doing something wrong, we can't get it to work.

No coop in the story mode is okay by me (GOW takes care of that craving), but no 2 player on the same machine multi? Seems like a necessary feature for any shoot'em'up games with online. Really dropped the ball on that one. :(

I got it but the first two levels haven't really impressed me that much so far. One thing I can't stand that I liked about GoW was that the reticle doesn't change when you change weapons. I'll have to play it more but so far hasn't been that much more impressive than GoW.

Obviously I haven't played the actual game yet but i'd like to caution anyone listening to 1up reviews for games because they are usually totally off. You can? I hit it with like 8 rockets, and said screw this... Run like Hell!!!!

I was on the fence about picking it up, even though I loved the singleplayer demo, and I'm totally glad I did. I'm on mission 6 already. Each one has been about 40 - 60 minutes each, with TONS of crap to blow up. I have to say, I have really enjoyed it so far. The Mechs, and Grappling hook are definitely a sweet, sweet thing. While the story is somewhat convulted so far, I could care less, the gameplay is fun. Can't wait to fight Green Eye, and the big moth!!!

I think its the latter. Japanese games tend to have non-sensical plotlines, ala Metal Gear Solid 2, WORST STORY EVER™.

I did look it up, you do get an achievment for it. So after I beat the game, it's Dune time baby!!!
As far as people bringing up GOW, I dunno. i don't really think it's all that great. Sure it's pretty, sure the co-op is fun, but it ain't like OMGWTFBBQ!!11!!1!! best game ev4r!!!! I found this to be a super fun game! I just finished it on Normal (middle) difficulty and found it way too easy. The health system is unique and keeps you moving through the game, but there is far too much of the orange stuff to really challenge the gamer.

The story was great! I mean, I love to laugh....really, I'd prefer a story as messed-up as this one to a story like Rainbow Six where I'm led to believe it could actually happen. I'd rather laugh AT a game's super crazy story than not believe it without anything to laugh at...make sense? haha

I was dissapointed with the framerate drops though. I think this is a game that the PS3 might have actually excelled at. I mean, with all the physics and particle effects (there are a MASSIVE amount of them) the 7 cores in the PS3 might have been able to ease the stress more than the 360's 3. Am I totally off on this?

Well, the PS3 doesn't quite have 7 cores, not in the same way the 360 does. The PS3 has one really good processor and I think 6 smaller ones, dedicated to different tasks such as physics or AI. The 360 has 3 equal cores of 3.2GHz and each can perform two instructions as once, so it is almost like having a 6 processors.

I'm running at 1080i and havent had any noticeable frame rate juggers at all. Not 1 even when the screen was awash with massive monsters, flying creatures and explosions ?

And yes you are off with regards to the PS3. AS wwooden says it does not have 7 cores. It has 1 processor than can run 6 SPU's. Not the same thing.

If the PS3 was some mythical beast for untapped power please tell the developers as some of the launch games had worse frame-rate issues than their 360 counterparts.

Basically PS3 is give or take the same power as 360. Its the different games specific to each format & blu ray that marks the difference.

A game released on both would look as close to identical bar incidental small differences.

That's goofy. Anyone else have framerate slowdowns? Oh well. So thanks for the core info on the systems. All that '7 cores!' BS doesn't sound so great anymore. I've always been a fan of less powerful cores but more of them than less cores but more powerful ones. If the 360's three cores can do two processes each, then golly

Just because more sounds better in reality it can mean very little. Remember for years Apple had struggled to convince the world that processor speed comparisons between it and say intel, did not mean the same thing. Its what the processor can do thats important.

The cell is an amazing feat of enginerring, of which there is no doubt, but it was never designed specifically for games processing in general, only certain calculations and therefore often 7 versus 3 doesnt make it better.

Unfortunetly most people still believe bigger is better. :)

The PS3 Cell has one 1 PPE (general purpose) processor with 7 SPE's, not 6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3). There were originally supposed to be 8 SPE's but this was cut down later to 7 for yield reasons.

I've been playing a mission a night for the last few nights... (up to mission 5). I love the game, I'm not into shooters but this seems more of an adventure game to me which is what I really like. I think the third person perspective helps me too. I hope they keep going in this direction...

haven't tried the multiplayer yet but will do soon.

Anyways, I'm playing it at the easy level to start and I've found each level is quite easy, that being I can just run through it shooting everything I see without any strategy. However, the bosses seem quite difficult. Either I'm having problems finding the weaknesses in their pattern or they are pretty difficult. I always try to use the VS's against the bosses and I can't move them very fast so I end up just standing there and throwing everything I can at them until it tells me to eject.

Try a 16 player online battle and watch the massive slow down. If there's a few players on the screen and a VS or 2 the framerate drops to less then 1 frame per second and basically stops you from doing anything until the VS stops firing and the explosions die down.

Now try the online battle in R:FOM with 40 players, just as many explosions, bullets, rockets, aliens etc and there's NEVER even a hint of slowdown. I'm no fanboy of any brand but from my perspective and from the games I personally own and play, the PS3 is ALOT more impressive than the 360.

Even in PGR3 which is far from impressive has massive slowdowns if all 8 cars come into the first corner of a race in view of the screen at the same time. True the F1 demo on the PS3 has a very slight drop in the framerate but that's with more cars on screen at the same time and much more impressive graphics. I can't comment on the final version of F1 but I've not heard anyone mention any slowdowns yet.

Now in fairness I havent played multiplayer fully yet. And I think the biggest game I joined was 6 players including myself and it was grand. All players from within Ireland (our clan)

Is it possible it's more to do with the server than the game and that your just all lagging ? Remember COD2 suffered terribly from this until they released an update.

Strange that the single player doesnt have the problem and theres massive amount of stuff going on, that's why I'm wondering if its more of an online problem rather than game in general ?

Perfect Dark Zero had 32 players and it never really suffered from online problems either.

Yeah that's what I thought could be the problem, that it was a lag issue and not a framerate problem.

When your having bad lag it can seem like the framerate is 1-5 fps, choppy and jumpy.

From the limited multiplayer i've played (just with members of our irish clan) I've yet to experience lag or framerate trouble at all.

Also anyone experiencing problems with lag, please check that your xbox live connection is showing NAT as OPEN. If its Moderate / Strict it can cause lag problems and errors connecting to games in general.

Yeah its a pain. You spend every day watching the letterbox just in case.

I know you don't want to believe it but it's definitely a frame rate issue. If my ping/connection is slow for some reason then other players will see me jumping around all over the place. If another players ping/connection is slow then I will see them jump all over the place and it will happen regardless of the number of players on screen.

The data needed to tell the game where the other players are and what they're doing is minimal compared to my 2mbit connection. Also if I optimise the connection and turn voice off it makes no difference which for me rules out connection issues.

And yes, my route has NAT open so that's not the issue as well.

But thats LAG issues your describing not frame rate.

I'm sure a patch will be released.

Personally I think everyone is just describing Network Lag (Packet Loss) during performance problems.

Let's consider the 360 install base (10+ million) and the number of Xbox Live Subscribers (4+ million)

Now consider the PS3 install base, ~400K

Even if we consider that every PS3 is being used online (100% online pentration), it's still only one tenth (1/10) the number of users as Xbox Live. Chances are it has more like 50% or less usage (<200K), a small fraction compared to XBL.

So PS3 servers are barely even getting touched compared to XBL, there are likely more people playing Lost Planet then there are PS3s sold, GoW for example has gone double-platinum.

Doesn't mean the PS3 is actually handling "massive 40 player battles" better then 360, it could in fact be that the PS3 network is just not being pushed. Whereas the 360 network has HUGE amounts of traffic.

When the PS3 online community gets as big as XBL then we could probably have a much better comparison.

In the end a game that's running on a network with very little traffic (RFoM) is naturally going to perform better then a game on a very high traffic network (LP/GoW/etc).

Dude... It's a latency issue. It might not by on your end, but the host's. I have a 15up/5down mb connection in Florida. I host 16 player ,matches and play with people all over the U.S., including my cousin and Uncle, who live 1600 miles away. Nobody complains about slowdowns.

I played my first online game last night, and had absolutely no framerate slowdowns at all, even with 15 people in the room, and lots of gunfire, smoke, explosions and such.

Hey is anybody having as much trouble as me online?
Its very hard for me to identifiy the other team online. I know the cursor turns the color of the other team but its so hard to see..I end up getting killed and a splitting head pain from straining.

I like the online play but it gives me a pain in the head everytime:(

I'm not having much trouble with it. It helps if you watch the way your enemy (or friend) is moving or acting (i.e. if they start shooting at your then you should probably assume they are not on your team). Make sure you use the scopes on guns that have that feature and/or zoom in with other guns to get a better idea who you are shooting at.

This game is a blast but I've been playing more Rainbow 6 lately although it keeps crashing on me. Freakin Microsoft.

Ok so this conversation is a bit of the past but I'll bring it back up. About this whole framerate issue, it happens, and it isn't lag. I've been playing on live and I've been seeing lag, a lot of it actually. For instance, posts being magically activated on their own with nobody around (????).

Anyway, last night I was playing level ten against the first boss. When you walk into the room, I was standing in the front right corner looking back and firing a gatling gun from a VS at the 'feelers'. The game came to a screeching halt multiple times, the feelers started pausing and then jumping to a new location, etc. etc. This was not over live so I'm pretty sure this wasn't lag.

I'm enjoying this game a lot though. One more level on single player to beat and I've managed to level up to 25 even though I'm not any good. The post grabs are a blast.

^I saw the post going up by itself several times, heck when I'm at the post sometimes the post fights with me and it turns to the other team color....I was told it was player in ghost mode...he can't see me and I can't see him.

The pause when picking up items and at the start is horrible but other than that the game has been great.

I wish R6:Vegas wasn't so buggy....the online multiplay is unplayable for me at times.

Now more character pause to pick up items.
Flags are now added
Guns feel better
People with bad connections gets knocked out.

I'm happy with it......though I get knocked out a lot of games:mad:

Yeah, I've had this game for a couple weeks now and haven't been able to get into an online game yet. It will search, says it finds a game, then it says the host has ended the game each time. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to this game, I think I played both demo's more than any full game I had last year.

I've had off and on problems with Lost Planet searching for a match and not finding one.

I had to search 3 times last night before it would find a player match.

Yeah it does actually:rolleyes:

The symptoms of a latency issue are players jumping around the screen and randomly disappearing. The issues I'm talking about have nothing to do with latency but the fact that the 360 cannot handle 16 players on the screen AT THE SAME time with mechs firing rockets and large explosions.

I've tested this 2-3 times now. If you have 16 players visible on the screen just walking around there are NO PROBLEMS. Get 5-6 of those players to use a VS and fire off some rockets into the other players then the game screeches to a halt. As soon as the explosions finish the frame rate normalises. This has nothing to do with network latency. If you think it does then you have an issue.

It's moderate...I think port fowarding is in need but I don't know the steps. Sometimes when I play vegas I get that red dot and the host kicks me out.

wwooden we have the same problem.....thats a new feature from the update...if you are the weakest link the game will boot you.

Yep it's definetly because your moderate. I had the same problems until my NAT was OPEN. The only thing I did to get my NAT to be OPEN was ask my ISP for a static IP address. Once I had done that I was grand and have not had any problems being booted from a server since.

^Yeah I'm going to try that. I also read if I enable UPnP the router will open the right ports for the 360 so I'm going to try that first....just to avoid talking to my ISP.
