Today marks Apple's second aniversary of the opening of its first retail store in May 2001. This press release (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2003/may/20retail.html) reports that 57 Apple Stores have been opened and that 20 new stores are planned over the next 12 months.
Three more prominent locations were announced, including Apple's first international Apple Store in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district. The other high profile locations are downtown Chicago (June 27th, 2003) and San Francisco.
Rumors of international Apple Stores have floated around, including previous specifics about the Tokyo store (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/02/20030214115816.shtml) - but this is the first official announcement by Apple that the Apple Stores would be built internationally.

It would be great to see some more international stores - I know that we've seen so many people screaming for them.
I'm wondering on Apple's choice of a Japanese store first - I would have thought that Canada would have been an easier one to set up....

I think Apple does well in Japan.
Well... at least the iPod holds some crazy % of the marketshare there in MP3 players.

I have an Apple Store in my area. What I'd really like to see out of having the Apple Store is some onsite or same day service for my Macs. Even when I take my Mac into the Apple Store, they keep it for two weeks. That's not really acceptable if you use it for work.

Walking by the future Chicago Michigan ave store has been very painful as this store has taken forever, with a demolishing and a rebuiling, but I know for sure that it has a cool glass ceiling on the second floor and a giant apple window. No sign of any metal facade, but the winter here is pretty brutal.

I don't have numbers, and am too lazy to find them right now, but yes Arn, Apple does well in Japan. In fact, Apple's marketshare in Japan is significantly higher than it is in the USA. Ever since Jobs took over, Mac marketshare in the USA has been at or below 5%, but there have been times in Japan when they have cracked 10% in certain market segments, like laptops, for instance.
There have been multiple occasions where a particular Mac model has been the #1 individual computer model in Japan, as well.
If I recall correctly, iPods have over 50% marketshare in Japan for MP3 players (or, at least, had that at some point during 2002).
So, anyway, I think Japan is really the best choice for the first non-USA Apple store.
Besides, Apple needs to start playing up the transparent multi-language capability of OS X, as it is one of the number one advantages right now of the Mac platform...especially with respect to Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

I don't have any numbers here, but a company like Apple has many reasons to do well in Japan. Japanese like things to be well designed and smooth functioning and they usually don't mind paying some premium for them. This is not meant to be a definitive statement, but I am Japanese and I have an idea of how we function. :D (Though I haven't lived there since '86... Been in the States since.)
I have no problem believing that iPod would do exceptionally well in Japan. Whereas Americans seem to have (what I think) unbelievable fatuation with price, Japanese like things to be small, slick and well designed. (Examples: Look at cell phones in Japan... Also, I think this is some of the reasons Xbox is not doing too well in Japan.)

Getting more Apple stores in the US is certainly a key ingredient to getting the possibility of a Mac in the minds of consumers. Most people when polled didn't even think of it as an option - or didn't have any place to try and buy.
Go apple - spend some of your cash!

Isn't it ever-so-slightly coincidental that the Chicago store opens the day that WWDC ends, and that there are also a couple of online Apple Store promos that end on the following day (the free printer and the .Mac discount)? This could just be coincidence, but something tells me it's not.
New software? Not terribly likely, since Panther will still be in beta and there aren't many apps that Apple would make a major push for in June.
New hardware is possible, but just what is still up in the air. Everyone wants their PPC 970 PowerMacs, but I don't know if they'd actually be ready to ship in late June. A 15" aluminum PowerBook would only really be impressive if it came along with a CPU upgrade (such as to a 1.25 GHz G4; I don't expect PPC 970s yet). The iBook, iMac and eMac can very likely be ruled out.
Of course, it could be that absolutely nothing outside of a preview of Panther is shown at or near WWDC. But the convergence of dates is just a bit suspicious...

This is no reason to launch an Apple Store in Japan first. The purpose of the Apple Store is to ensure that underserved buyers (i.e., most of the general public) get exposed to the beauty that is Apple hardware. It's safe to say that Japan is well aware of Apple.
On the other hand, Canada is grotesquely underserved in the Mac market. There are retailers in Toronto, of course, but they could never get the exposure that a flagship Apple Store on Yonge Street could garner.
C'mon Apple! It's been two freakin' years! Let's get some total quality Apple Store action in Canada!

Ginza is an ideal choice for an Apple store - it's a swanky uptown retail district, with lots of expensive shops and it aleady has a huge Sony museum, which puts the Sony store in NYC to shame. I think the idea of being neighbours to Sony appeals to Mr Jobs, and I think that Tokyo will go nuts for it!
Oh, and yeah, I wish we could have one in London - at the bottom of Neal Street where the FILA store used to be would be cool.

I doubt think we will see it though, I think Dallas is a much much more likely spot to find a future apple store.
of course, they could put one in the Lakeside Mall in Metairie (a suburb of New Orleans).... that would be sweet considering that is only a few miles from my house :D

Lakeside would be nice, and I'd like to see it in the sub's as well, but I'd put my money on it going into Canal Place, or the Riverwalk for a lot more foot traffic and tourist draw.
I visit Lakeside and Clearview, but most visitors don't. Stay near the Quarter, and you'll get visitors. Besides, Trent Reznor could be the store spokesperson. hehe. :)

If Apple are to expand into Europe, I would guess it would be in this order:
1. France
2. Ireland / UK
3. Germany / Sweden
4. The rest...
Why? Apple has focused on France during the last couple of years, Apple already has a large administrative infrastructure in Ireland, and Germany and Sweden were (after the UK) the first European countries to get their own Apple Webstores.
I'm Norwegian, so I'll probably have to wait some additional years...

Please Apple. Its no fun to drive all the way to St. Louis or Denver to go to a store. And CompUSAs workers in the Mac section barely know what a Mac is...
MicroCenter is better.. but not the same as the knowledge your own employees provide...

Yes, you are right indeed. Apple would be making a mistake to put the store in the Lakeside mall. The tourists seldom make it out to Metairie (not much reason to, if you asked me)
I could see an apple store in Canal Place. The location is good, being right outside the Quarter and all... would definitely have to put up a NO DRINKS sign :D

Hooywah... I'll take the Metra down from Harvard, IL to see this! It sounds MUCH better than trying to negotiate the suburbs. But then, the train always does sound better than the suburbs. ;->

I agree that Tokyo is the perfect place for an Apple Store. Not that I wouldn't love to see them open in other countries, but from a business standpoint you couldn't ask for better:
1) Macs sell well in Japan. People are willing to pay more (and have the money to spend) for nice looking, compact, quality products.
2) 30 million people live in the greater Tokyo area, and it's not exactly hard to catch a train to Ginza. That's the best store/population coverage you're going to get anywhere in the world, period.
3) Japanese people don't shop online much, so a physical store is a lot more likely to sell Macs to people who don't need to be educated than is the case in, say, the US.
4) Ginza is where the money is. Put an Apple Store in front of a fashion concious, wealthy consumer who just might want a computer/iPod, and you've practically guaranteed a purchase.
That store is money in the bank. I'll bet one in Shinjuku to cater directly to the younger crowd would be a success as well, but Ginza is the place to start.
Now on with the rest of the planet!

They will clean up in Japan. The new store in SF will be great. I always suspected they wouldn't interfere with the CompUSA there because it gives so much face time to Macs. Soon they will have taken over the entire Bay Area. Hooray!

Alset, i know what your saying. it has always bothered me that there was no apple store here in SF. i mean this is almost as close to the heart of the mac as you can get and yet there was no representation of the retail store.
I always figured it had something to do with CompUSA downtown. when apple first started the whole retal chain that is when CompUSA poured quite abit more money and time into selling apple products. Oh well, if the SF store is going to be on Union square then I am sure that CompUSA is going to change their upper-level area since the Apple store wil be within two blocks.
I am just really happy that a flagship store is finally moving in. it is about time.
once it opens i will have a 5-10 minute walk to a flagship apple store. not bad.

Apple Canada is basically a warehouse with a phone number. But they're pretty good a gouging the public these days, what with the Canadian dollar flying high. I checked out the same system at the Canadian and American online stores (basicallly a 1.25 DP with a bigger drive, Superdrive, more RAM, a monitor and SCSI support) and found that the U.S. price (converted to $ CAN) was - get this - $760 cheaper than the Canadian price! Now, I can understand maybe $50, but $760? That's gouging. And what with no duty on computers from the USA, I'm going to Buffalo to buy my Mac!

Moving to Japan is a great move, since its the land where everyone cares about looks. They are likely to buy mostly because japanese like clean, compact white electronics.
I could'nt agree more that Apple has never exploited its would be advantage in the east. East is more important as macs are largely unknown, and considering how much asians care about electronic's sleekness and compactness , on the other hand Canadians are already well into macs. Equiping macs with eastern technology is important, as east is the big mula right now.
I disagree with france, nothing political but thats just pointless because the french ...well they don't really like to advance in computers..

You are all missing the most important location!
Anchorage, Alaska
The home town of a future multiple academy award winner. After that, you have to have a store in London, where the afore mentioned future multiple academy award winner will be studying for a film degree starting in September. I forgive all of you for missing that, it must have been too obvious.
PS I do think Japan deserves a store because Japanese girls are really hot... for Apple products.

Good for Apple. I have an Apple store about 20 minutes away and i just like going and starring. By the way, I was recently there, and considered buying an airport extreme base station. I have only airport in my ibook and will get a extreme card (or better) when the 970's come out. My question is, should I get an extreme base station, or should I wait and see what they come out with next? And if i do wait, how long a wait do you all think it will it be?
thanks a lot.

YES! THANK YOU! But, unfortunately, I'm afraid the presence of Dell is going to keep Apple far, far away from Austin. I live in Austin, and I can honestly say that Houston is the closest place to go for Mac software.
CompUSA doesn't cut it, and Frys...*pssh* gimme a break. One rack of Mac software!? Right next to a huge Mac hardware section (complete with shiny archway)??? I actually complained about this to a worker there and she replied with a smirk, "Well, that's part of the problem with Macs...no software." to which I replied, "That's a lie! There's plenty of software! You just don't stock it!"...I'll never shop there again.
At any rate, the Mac community here is huge. I can't go to a coffee shop without seeing at least a couple of iBooks. Even the Schlotskys (sp?) on Lamar has 4 flat panel iMacs for free web surfing while you eat.
If Apple really is afraid of Dell, then just build a store on the south side of town. Dell is all the way up in Round Rock (see: Yuppieville), they'll never notice. :D

I agree, Central Texas needs an Apple Store. Austin or San Antonio. I would rather it be San Antonio considering that it is the bigger of the two, but either would do. I am sick of Dallas getting Apple Stores everywhere and SA and Austin not getting anything.

Austinites are 'wierder' (you see 'keep austin wierd' t-shirts everywhere) than San Antonians, and I think apple would do better in Austin just because the people are more mac compatible. Plus, a apple store on the drag would sell LOTS of laptops, because college students would go crazy. UT rocks.

Wait.
Don't buy anything for the future - you'll either pay an excessive price (compared to the price that it drops to when you need it), or you buy something that's an obsolete dead-end - because some other technology arrived in the meantime.
On the other hand, be reasonable. If you don't have a base station today and you need one today, then a few extra bucks for extreme will give you a few months of cushion.
Be prepared to blow the "investment" off, though. In a few months, 802.11a (or z or w or ??) might be the hot new thing, or BlueTooth EXTREME, or whatever - and any extra money you spent is long gone....

I wish we'd get one here in Maine! I spoke with an Apple rep recently at a trade show and he said that they (the New England office, I guess) have been telling Apple for a while that they should look at Maine but, so far, no go. Since the state got so much media attention for our iBook program (heck, Steve himself came up for a media event with the Governor), you'd think that they'd get a store up here so that the parents of all of those 7th and 8th graders could get compatible computers for the home.

There are too many "dots" in the SF Bay Area (the new SF store?), the Chicago Area (the new downtown Chicago store?), and in Florida (an unannounced store?). It would seem central Florida just might be the next store opening.

I know that Apple has a store in Germantown, TN. (near the middle of the state) However, does anyone know if they are planning on opening up any in East Tennessee or closer to the Knoxville/Chattanooga Area. Thanks.

Perhaps this has already been mentioned on another thread, but I've found that it's easy for me to see a store is going to be put in some areas by cruising the Apple job opportunities on their website......

Hana, you are absolutely right! Should have thought of that one a long time ago! According to Apple's job listings they are definitely opening new stores in Seattle - University Village (had already heard of that one) and in Richmond, Virginia (news to me.) In these two locations Apple is looking for Apple Store Managers, so it is pretty clear even to an old dunce like me. They are also advertising openings for Full Time Mac Specialists and Inventory Specialist in Burlingame, CA; Boca Raton, FL; Santa Monica, CA; and Walnut Creek, CA. Some of these may be for resellers like CompUSA. Thanks for the tip.

i think it's bad that apple displaces other local retailers when it moves to another area. instead of training new, unqualified employees for the apple stores, apple should recruit from the existing resellers, and just give them any additional training they need. that way, fewer people lose their jobs, and the only person who complains will be the store owner. also, the apple store employees are known to refer customers to the resellers for difficult questions, because many resellers have more experience and are more knowledgable.

Wow, i find this soooo funny because apple probably has almost as much market share as sony in japan :D
I really think they need to open a store up north, canada or alaska :D it would be my second home. suprisingly, there are quite a few mac users up here, and i think an apple store would do pretty good..our schools also are fairly techologicly advanced, and they use macs so education is a major market up here also.

Now this is an ancient thread! If you want to talk about Apple retail store growth there is a much, much, newer thread.

The other day I was at Christana Mall in New Castle, Delaware and I noticed a coming soon sign for another apple store. To me in theory I think it is a good location since there are so many college's located in and around the area. I was wondering if anyone here has heard anything about it recently? It's a good thing though maybe i can get a job there and get some great discounts!

Today marks Apple's second aniversary of the opening of its first retail store in May 2001. This press release (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2003/may/20retail.html) reports that 57 Apple Stores have been opened and that 20 new stores are planned over the next 12 months.
I don't know if anybody else has noticed, but this isn't exactly May, 2004. We're getting a little long in the tooth for this to be the celebratory month, you know?

Mike, look again. This thread was started May 2003 not 2004. Someone resurrected the very old thread instead of using a much newer one.

I have to say you all sound like a bunch of dumb ass Microsoft geeks over there. "That is old news" I bet half of you who are all soo stuck up your ass live in the basement of your moms house. I just reported my finding while you just go and tear it up to shreads saying that it's old news and the same with Themacman's news too. By the way (Sayhey and MiketheC) that thread only said 14 new locations and no listings to where they will be at ass hole. This is why I hate forums cuz of people like you. dicks

Are you drunk? No one jumped on you. Relax and enjoy your store in Wilmington. And next time read what people post and count to ten before you post stuff like this.
