Hello everyone. I was given this laptop from a friend who no longer has a use for it, I removed the hard drive for them and installed it in an external enclosure so they could keep their data. This is a Compaq R400 AMD Laptop with a 15.4 inch screen. Unfortunately the LCD screen is cracked and damaged, also the keyboard is missing a few keys as seen in the photo. I do not have the power adapter for this so I can not charge the battery. I just started up the computer and went to the BIOS screen and took a photo (using an external display), after that the computer shut down since the battery had died. This laptop computer is being sold AS-IS since I can not test all of the features without the power adapter.
I suppose if you can buy a replacement LCD screen and a power adapter this can be a fully functional laptop. It has some nice features such as Built-In Wireless and a DVD-RW drive. There is also a sticker on the bottom for a Windows XP Home Edition installation. I guess you can contact Compaq (Now HP) to maybe get a set of restore disks, but if you have your own copy of Windows you can install that or your favorite flavor of Linux. :D
Here are some of the specs I found while searching online.
Capable of running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Not included)
AMD Athlon (64 4000+ 2.4GHz/1MB l2 Cache)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800) LCD needs to be replaced!
128MB ATI Radeon Xporess 200M w Hypermemory Technology
512MB total DDR SDRAM (RAM Slot full with one 256MB chip, 256MB built-in)
Hard Disk Drive has been removed
DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
54g Built-In Broadcom 802.11b/g Wi-Fi & Bluetooth
8 or 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (Battery type & condition unknown)
No AC Power Adapter is included
Also here is a list of the I/O (input output) ports for the laptop.
Security Lock Port
Four USB 2.0 Ports
Built-In SD, Memory Stick (Pro), MMC, SM, XD 6-In-1 Media Card Slot
PCMCIA Type I/II Slot that is also ExpressCard 52/34 compatible
S-Video-like port for display on a TV (Requires special adapter - not included)
Standard VGA (Video Graphics Array) port for connecting to Monitors
Audio In/Out 3.5mm standard jack (headphone port and microphone port)
FireWire 1394b 4-Pin Port (Like on DV Cameras)
56k Dial-Up Modem
10/100 Ethernet Port
Specialized Compaq Expansion port (Probably for docking station)
A review of the features of the laptop can be found here. (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=18862)
I'm just wondering what I can get for it. If there is not enough interest here I'll post it on eBay and see what I can get for it. I'm just curious if anyone would know a good starting price for this laptop. It is damaged and needs repair (for example a new LCD screen) but, if your the type of person that has the right parts and can fix it. Then this will be an easy way to get a laptop pretty cheaply. If you need any photos just ask. (The web link with a review has photos of what looks like to be the same model) just ask.
Note about system specs. The specifications I got online said the CPU was clocked at 2.4GHz, however when I booted the computer into the bios it said it was a 2000 MHz. All the information posted here was gathered to the best of my knowledge, however I can not guarantee the specs exactly since I can not operate the machine. Once again this is AS-IS.
The laptop is in pretty good condition despite the keyboard and screen. Any ideas for a starting price? Thanks :)
