Nintendo had mobile phone/gaming ambitions?

According to an Engadget story (http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/06/watch-out-n-gage-nintendos-right-on-your-tail/), Nintendo filed a patent in 2001 for "Electronic apparatus having game and telephone functions"

Could they still be interested in a mobile phone + games machine 'all-in-one' solution?

my first impressions were "wow, that looks cool". Maybe because it looks a lot like my current cell phone I use. :p

I would hate to have that much plastic between my hand and the D-pad. Good to see it never came to fruition, really.
