View Full Version : Should I get a Wii?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to purchase a Wii. I like the price, but I don't play video games anywhere nearly as much as I used to. I don't have anyone to play multiplayer games against, either :( I do miss the older consoles, though, and would definitely make use of the Virtual Console feature.

I say yes!
My reason:
A lot of people I know that were not videogamers have been turned into a casual gamer due to the Wii.

If you want the VC games then probably yes. T
he Wii doesn't have any killergames for it right now (cept Zelda which imo is hardly a 'killer' title  ) but it seems like most people are just stoked to play old N64 games so maybe you will be too!

Save your money and instead go on craigslist or ebay and buy a ton of old games and consoles instead.

Like my pink friend said above....if you are into the old games and want to play them. Right now there really is not a game out there thats worth the purchase to me but that will change soon when MP:C hits the market...I would say get it and play the old stuff until the new stuff is gold.
No rush right now.

I would consider it; its an excellent console if you dont have a lot of time to play; Wii sports and VC games lend themselves to quick and fun games. I can't litter my family room with old consoles, carts and controllers, so the small wii with no wires is a godsend.

Old consoles are lots of fun. I think maybe they are starting to have some worth.
I remember a few years ago when EBGames was getting rid of their used N64's, they had a deal - buy 4 used N64 games, and get a free N64! I bought popular yet common carts (like Turok, and Star Wars) and got 4 games and a system for $25 as a gift for a friend!
I don't know what kind of deals there are now but you can probably get a lot of good games for cheap. You can also check out the classic gaming expos. The ones I go to are.

Depends on what you like. Zelda: TP is a fantastic game, no question, but you could also just buy a cheap, used Gamecube and play it on that. I've enjoyed pretty much everything on the Wii, and I'm very satisfied with the console. Zelda, Rayman, Elebits, Excite Truck, Trauma Center, Wario Ware, Wii Sports - all lots of fun. I also thoroughly enjoyed Red Steel and Tony Hawk despite the lukewarm reviews. Monkey Ball and Rampage were both pretty disappointing, mostly due to poor implementation of the controls.
The VC system is a blast if you like those types of game (even though I have a Genny, SNES, NES, etc hooked up and ready to go, I still like playing VC games, and have bought a bunch). Many of the TG-16 games are a steal at $6. Like rosalindavenue mentioned, I don't have tons of time to play games these days (though I did *make* time to finish Zelda and Red Steel), and the wii has a lot of games you can enjoy in quick bursts.
If you're not really sure, there's no harm in waiting until there are more games that interest you. Or pick up a cheap cube, xbox or ps2 in the mean time.

No need to buy a used 'Cube since I've already got one. I have zero interest in non-Nintendo systems... That's good to know about the games, though Zelda: Twilight Princess is the only one of significant interest to me.

Prior the DS, I hadn't been gaming much. I had grown bored of all the consoles and only a few WC3 mods were keeping my attention every other week. Anyway, the DS and now the Wii have all changed that and I game more now than I have in years. Nintendo's systems really shook things up and brought fun back into the gaming, so don't even hestitate on a Wii purchase, especially for the Virtul Consolse, I love this feature.
Anyway there are plenty of great games, especially Zelda which is best played on the Wii, and there are more slated to come in the next few months.

Well, I have a 360 and a Wii and the Wii is getting just about all of my play time. It's is very fun to quickly load up Wii Sports or Excite Truck. I have Zelda but haven't gotten far into it yet.

Right now I don't recommend getting a Wii unless you are a Zelda fan or have a close friend or significant other whom you are hoping to convert into a gamer. Don't expect to succeed in the latter, however, unless that person is already into games except for controller frustrations, lack of coordination, etc. That is, the Wii controller makes the games more interesting for non-gamers, but the novelty only goes so far...

Wii sports is pretty fun and isn't like most tradtional games. I'd suggest trying one somewhere if you can, then deciding, it's def. not the usual video console experience at least at the moment.

I can attest to the enthusiasm that this system has generated in non-gamers including my gf. If you're even a little bit sociable and occasionally have people to visit you, you'll appreciate the Wii. Last week my landlord came to my flat to fix a plumbing problem, and ended up getting drawn into 40 minutes of Wii Sports games!
And bear in mind that I'm someone who hates sports in real life.

It's been about a month since I touched my wii (he he he). I didn't like zelda and I thought call of duty would be cool, but I just didn't enjoy it. I'm actually back on my PC game. Hopefully, better games come out...soon! I'm also planning to get a 360 soon.

Definitely look into getting one. It's a fresh experience that'll probably make you start playing games more again. Virtual console will be useful, and by the end of the year we'll have Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros Brawl...:D

Yep, you forgot Super Paper Mario and the third party titles are lookin better too with some M rated games like, Godfather, Scarface, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Sadness, as well as, DDR, and Guitar Hero. Come on Rockstar, port a GTA and Square make a Final Fantasy and there will be no need for Sony anymore....
Ok maybe for you Metal Gear, God of War, Devil May Cry, and Gran Turismo fans but thats about it...

Nintendo is getting all the Final Fantast spinoffs. Crystal Chronicles is on DS and Wii and DS is getting classic ports. Dragon Quest is now Nintendo-exclusive, with Wii getting a spinoff and DS getting the main series and Sony getting nothing.
Sony is only getting the numbered Final Fantasies.

Yes, you should get a Wii. Especially with the virtual console, you'll find the Wii to be a great console. And, if you decide you dislike the Wii, you can sell it on ebay. There's a bid for a Wii that ends in about 20 minutes going for around $385.

I don't know about all of that but there are some good games coming out for the wii and hopefully this time the 3rd parties will stick with the machine and not ditch it when the remote fever dies down.
All of the FF games are spin offs and sony is getting the feature so Sony is still getting the big guns.
I would wait until the fever dies down because the games that are out for the wii right now are not that good.

I know, I was using a little hyperbole but seriously the Wii is getting some good games this year.

Definitely yes. I own one, and even though there aren't that many triple-A titles right now, numerous excellent first-party titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3. It's going to be a great year for nintendo.

I'm also thinking about getting a Wii. Right now there's mainly Zelda that interests me, but I believe Wii sports and Excite Truck (when it comes to Europe that is) can be fun too. However, I've never owned a GameCube, so there's plenty of games there that I would like to play.

Exactly, the Gamecube back catalogue is a huge selling-feature of the Wii.

I'm going to get one this summer when I go back to the states. By that time I'm hoping they'll have added a DVD drive or folks will have moded it to do so (just going back for two months and would like my Wii to play my movies back home)...also hoping they'll finally have more games out that aren't iffy on controls. That and cube games will be cheap and easy to get (got a friend with 30 or more at least from what I remember on his shelves)...plus things will have settled down a bit. Hype is making things stupid right now....so the 360 will do me nicely till there are used copies of Zelda everywhere :)

If my Wii had a DVD player, there would be 5 here in my office and 3 in the front room. :) I would only like that feature, if I had kids and wanted to give them one system for their playroom that could handle DVDs and games.
What hype? The Wii actually lives up to what many others were saying about it early on. Nintendo has always been humble about what the system would offer and never hyped it. Hype is a PS3 or 360, where as MS and Sony were touting their systems as being vastly more powerful than anything else in existence.. Well, we all know how that turned out. That's hype.
Iffy on the controls, that's your opinion. ;) Although some games can be improved on, since they are the first of their kind, for the most part it's just understanding a new way to play that has some people scratching their heads. Too many of you peeps were raised on thumb-twiddling. I had to get used to MonkeyBall as an example, and was too critical of its controls early on, but now I have skill and can win sometimes. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif

I wasn't raised on thumb twiddling...I had the number pad goodness of the Intellivision :) between that and the "powerglove" I grew up with other types of controllers. I've played all the fps's available for the Wii currently and the controller isn't just buggy it's not usable for serious fps playing. It's fine running through a game on easy or something, but the odd jumps in movement or making your character spin isn't acceptable to me.
I love the system and can't wait to get it. You didn't need to try and diffuse my wanting it to have a DVD player. I have a bunch with me here in Bangkok, but I'll need something else for my short trip back home to work the wedding season this summer. That's a valid want for me and for some others.
I don't think it has lived up to the hype...YET. I think it fully can. Right now I see only a couple games that are anywhere near playable on a long term level. There are some fun games and playful games for sure. But nothing of real, lasting quality yet. And the bugginess of controls on ports and some racing, fps, etc limit the benefits the wand adds and leaves one wanting a bit more.
Having said all this I still plan on getting one. But I don't think it's all some are trying to say it is. I hope they really do fix the controller issues in future games. Part of the reason why I'm waiting. We'll see if it's just buggy initial games or tech that can't be as precise as some games require...maybe due to imprecise human error ;)

I had Zelda spin on me a couple of times late one night, but that happened prior to the batteries dying. I could see interference also causing a problem if it were to interupt the Wiimote's signal. Fortuanatly I don't have that issue in my office, or at friend's places, but mabye I'm just lucky.
Some controls are definatly too sensitive, but for FPS games, even the blah that is Red Steel, it has a much better control setup than any previous console FPS. I've been aiming with uber-precise mice on my comps for years, so it wasn't that hard side-stepping to the Wiimote. It's the same concept and isn't buggy, it's just not as refined as it could have been. MonkeyBall actually has better controls on its mini-FPS game than Red Steel though. This is quite sad on UbiSoft's part.
Wii Sports is simplified, but it takes skill and it's definatley not buggy. I can say the same for many Wii titles. Some control schemes are definately crap, so it's just a matter of time for them to find a happy medium and not go overboard where it's not necessary.
My friend is waiting for the DVD feature so he can put it in his office. If Ninendo hadn't announced that option, which was good of them for the heads up, I'm sure my friend would have bought a Wii already.
I wasn't privy to the great Intelivision. :( That and the Colecovision were two consoles I really wanted when I was younger.

I would say no unless you plan on getting VC games. Twilight Princess and Wii Sports sounds like the only fun games.
I'm going to wait till DVD support or better games.

To be fair Excite Truck is alright as well and there's a couple options if one is a mini game lover.
I think I still have my intelliviison with like 50 games in a box in an attic somewhere ;)
I'm really hoping things shape up for the Wii as I'm planning on getting one soon, but there's still enough left to be seen for me at the moment...it's a dual headed beast...you want the console to sell well so people will put out games for it, but then you also don't want to spend money on something that's lacking in some areas at the moment....

SuperMonkeyBall is also fun. :) My friend likes Cars, but I haven't played it, nor will I spend the money to find out if it's good. :o Madden is also worth the purchase of a Wii. It's all just a matter of preference. I also like Excite Truck.
The Poll channel is interesting, there' also the News and Weather channels. Lots of little things to always do. My Wii is on all day, even when I'm not playing it. Besides my DS, which I sleep most of the time, I've never left any console on in the background.
Lacking for some, not for others. :p But yeah, we all have our needs, so it's just a mater of time before everyone will be Wiissimilated. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif
