I'm heading off to Grad School this fall and I'm looking to minimize my load, so the switch from a 40lbs tower to a nice little MacBook would be welcome. I was thinking of selling the G5 now to get maximum resale value, then sitting on the money until mid-summer before buying the new notebook (I have a secondary machine, an old G4, that I can use in the mean time).

Anyway, I was wondering what you think the going rate for a machine like mine might be, so here are the specs:

Dual G5 2.0GHz
1.5 GB RAM
2 x 160GB
Radeon 9650 256MB
Airport/Bluetooth
Superdrive
All the original papers, discs, the box, etc.

The machine is in fantastic condition and it is the best computer I have ever owned, I just can't see myself lugging it off with me.

Thanks in advance for all the help :)

I will give you the specs on my G5 I just sold:

Dual 1.8 G5
2.5GB of RAM (8 slot model)
ATI9800 128 (which, even with your 9650 256MB, is about the same in terms of benchmarks)
2x160GB
7.1 surround sound card

No airport of bluetooth. but all original papers/box.

I got $1250 on eBay for it.

Id estimate yours to be very close if not slightly higher.

Thanks for this info. I was planning on putting mine up for sale, but at these prices, I may as well leave it here and use it myself. I had hoped I may be able to get a bit more.

The G5 is losing value every day. Slowly, but its going down. I jumped ship before the big CS3 exodus.

When CS3 hits the shelves, the G5 will lose its value overnight (maybe over a week on eBay).

If it does what you want, keep it. If you want to get rid of it for an Intel CPU (like me) then dump it asap.

The longer you wait, the less youll get.

Me? I paid $2500 or so 3 years ago for my G5. 50% is a good resale value, do that with ANY pc after 3yrs.

I was offered AU$1200 for my 2x2 GHz about six months ago as a trade on a MacBook Pro and 30" screen.

I now have my PowerMac G5 and no MacBook Pro and no 30" screen!

That doesn't sound too far off what I was expecting, thanks for the reply Sdashiki.
How did the shipping go? I imagine it would be pretty costly to ship such a large box (though I realize the buyer usually covers these things).

This is what I realized the other day. I was going to do the swap in the summer but then I realized that by waiting another 4-6 months I'd lose quite a bit of resale value considering the whole Intel transition which speeds depreciation of PowerPC-based systems.

Shipping by FedEx ground is surprisingly cheap. May take a bit longer than Express, but its by far cheaper.

From Florida to Beverly Hills (90210 baby!), is probably the farthest you can ship things without going to AK or OR. A G5 weighs about 40-50lbs.

FedEx First Overnight® $215.59
FedEx Priority Overnight® $187.96
FedEx Standard Overnight® $171.72
FedEx 2Day® $131.99
FedEx Express Saver® $107.46
FedEx Ground® $34.70

ground is about 1/3 of the cost of express.

I'm surprised by the prices. Looks like eBay starting bids are in the mid-$1000 range for a decent dual 2 GHz G5. Granted, not too many bids on these things...

kwajo,

you also need to remember that, i believe, what sdashki quoted is in USD.

add another $200 or $300 to your price for CDN.

canadapost.ca is the way to ship in canada too. fair value, plenty of offices around and you can track it easy etc..etc..

it's too bad i'm not done my current workload b/c i would LOVE your machine. no joking either. does it have applecare left on it? i just need the cash... ugh.

cheers,
keebler

Yea, forgot to mention it was in USD and not CA.

With eBay, only fools put a starting bid at anything above $1.

$1000 starting bid is a couple dollars to list, $1 starting bid is pennies to list.

Yet both will go for the same price in the end, always.

people dont "really" bid until the last day, and then the last 5 minutes, and then the last 30seconds.
