My White 2Ghz Core Duo MacBook and last revision iBook G4 are making hard drive clicking noises every minute or so (more so on the iBook G4). Is this anything to be worried about?
I had the MacBook since July 2006 and iBook G4 since September 2005.

Start backing up??? The odds of 2 drives failing are bad - did you play the lotto this weekend??
Hope it is nothing - but i'd be backing up somehow anyway.
Do they do it on battery?? Maybe you are having a power problem???

Both of them just started doing this? At the same time? Did you set them on top of a gigantic subwoofer or something? Or drop them?
And when you say clicking noise, I assume it's not just the normal read/write noise, right? Does it make a big click and then sound like the drive is spinning back up? How does the computer behave if you're using it when this happens?

The MacBook started it first, then a month later the iBook G4 started doing it.
This happened like in november 2006. Both laptops have Toshiba harddrives and I have a feeling I need to replace the harddrive in the MacBook at least.
The computers still operate fine when I hear the clicking noises and the clicking noise happens with battery or power adapter. If I do change the hard drive in the MacBook which one should I choose, I want something cheap but lasts a long time. I don't know what to do about the iBook G4. I love MacBook and iBook G4 very much.:)

I think it's important to expand on this point. You say it works fine...are you sure it's a bad clicking noise and not something you're just noticing now more than before? And like I asked before, it is a single really loud "click", or is a series of clicks?

clicking hard drives usually mean impending failure. Back up immediately and get them checked out. Certainly weird that it would happen to two at once, but it's possible.

The harddrive click happens every minute or so. On the iBook G4 the clicking noise is loud which I could hear from at least two feet away. On the MacBook, I have to put my ear near the battery to really hear it. But it's still hearable from a foot away.

As said before posts, do what you can, such as get you a good external HD, and back-up all your data. Even if it is not your HD about to become a metallic multi-layered frisbee, the peace of mind will help ya :)

I would definately back up data and maybe get Apple to check it out.

Back up now. I and others have been down this road, which most likely ends with a new HD. My clicking only lasted a week, so consider yourself lucky.

Thank You Very Much To All! Which harddrive should I get for my MacBook? I don't know what I am going to do about the iBook G4's harddrive.

As reiterated, are you sure you're not hearing the regular read/write from the hard drive? My hard drives make a whicking noise every now and then too, but it's normal. I can hear it from at least 2 ft. away, if not across my entire quiet room, but it's not loud at all. Just a whickwhickwhick or a bzzwhirrt.

Maybe you're right. It might be normal disk write Harddrive noise. But I still don't understand why it's happening on two laptops. I treat my laptops with care and respect. The MacBook is used as a Desktop Replacement to play some games like Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion and the iBook G4 is carried almost everywhere with me.
