I think I never seen a firmware update for a PowerPC Mac, even on my iBook G4. Please somebody clarify this.
(I do more software updates on the MacBook than the iBook G4)

I know that there have been some. probably the reason that you notice the firmware updates more is because the intel machines are newer, so they still work on them.

And the intel macs are just way cooler :p
no be glad. The reason for the firmware updates is mostly due to something being broken or not working right, or adding some functionality that should have been there.

Yes, it's because the Intel Macs are newer, and need more revisions. Intel chips haven't natively ran on OSX, so they need to fix small things to make it all function properly.

There were firmware updates released for many PowerPC Macs years ago (I had to update firmware on a G3 iMac I got last year); I'm just assuming that they got major the kinks ironed out of them back then.

Should I update the firmware on the iBook G4 if I see one?

Sure but I don't think there is any chance of there being one.

It's probably just because it is an Intel board. My current PC uses a board from Intel and they constantly are releasing new firmware updates for it. I have noticed other board makers do this rather often too. However, I have not seen other board makers as prolific as Intel is about firmware updates.
As for the PPC Macs having such infrequent firmware updates. Either they were designed very well to begin with, or Apple, assuming they designed and programed the PPC boards, didn't feel like releasing an update for every little insignificant fix.

Honestly, I'd rather they go back to PPC, and maybe only using Intel for the MBP's.

Since I got my Mac Pro in September of '06 I have only had to go through 1 firmware update.
