Any ideas? It gets to the flashing question mark but it can't find anything and I would like to install 7.5.3 on it. Thanks

Presumably you don't have the 7.5.3 disks? You can get them from ftp.zip.com.au/pub/mac/system/system7.5.3/
7.5.3 is also available on Apple's FTP site, but I believe it's one big image rather than individual disks (at least it used to be, haven't checked recently).

I'm really curious about WHY you're installing such archaic software...? Don't mean to agitate ya, just pure curiousity...

7.5.5's the newest version that's free. I think you have to install 7.5.3 first before you can install 7.5.5 (could be wrong on this).

7.5.3 is free, 7.5.5 is an upgrade from it. 7.6.1 is not free.
I got 7.5.3 as 19 seperate parts. 7.5.3 comes in 3 parts.

a while back, Apple prohibited websites from giving out older versions of MacOS to people. Some sites were giving out versions of 6.0 and older to people with older machines that wouldn't run 9. 7.5.3 was made free by Apple. Not like their making any money off of 6.0.8 anymore  lot of people were pissed at that decision to yank support ..

I don't even risk trying to update the OS on my older Macs. I value my little bit of sanity too much... ;)
