View Full Version : Question for those with Wii's

I currently "only" have a 360, but I know I'll get a Wii sooner or later, depending on when Nintendo ramps up production and/or demand falls off a bit.
My question has two parts:
Have the majority of developers REALLY grasped the concept of the wiimote yet? Or are the 1st party games the ones with the best implementation of the controls?
Secondly, which games are the most fun to play? Obviously Zelda is a no-brainer, but other than Zelda are there any really good titles out that combine good use of the wiimote with good gameplay?
Basically I want to know which games are worth considering getting for Wii OVER the 360...

Nintendo still owns at making games for their system...I've alway thought NIntendo was the best software company.
Madden '07 does a nice job , but I've haerd/seen that people who like the "normal" madden don't like the the Wii Madden and vice versa. I liked Red Steel also. Elebits seems like a good use of the Wii remote, but I have not gotten into the game yet. Sonic ways also a decent use of the Wii remote. And SSX Blur looked like it could be a good games. And Mario Party this monday!

The only 3rd party games I have are Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Red Steel, and I haven't been very impressed. Red Steel had potential, but just ended up being buggy and kind of lame. Marvel just doesn't feel right, you just end up swinging the wiimote mindlessly to attack.
The Nintendo games, on the other hand are extremely fun, but this is to be expected. Not only has this been a common theme for Nintendo consoles in the past, but they also developed it, so they have had ideas for it since the start. I think with time 3rd party developers will do a better job, but right now there isn't much out there, from my experience at least.

From most've what I've heard, Red Steel's controls were the main drawback from that game. My concern with the Wii's controls at this point is that they will adapt well, but only to casual minigames. It seems obvious to me that a sensor control scheme will port well to these types of games, but I'm really wondering how the real "franchise" types of games will turn out.
Its encouraging to hear that Zelda worked out, but what about games like the upcoming smash bros.? Driving games? My only experience with Wii has been with excite truck, so I can't really judge this well for myself.

As far as controls go I know im not alone here when i say that they can be downright gimmicky on some games. Wii Sports is a great implementation of the controller, Zelda TP.. bah give me the choice to use a CC or GCN controller. It varies by game but I would like the option to use a standard controller rather than always relying on motion. The novelty of moving your arms around to play games gets old rather fast. Super Paper Mario at least got smart and uses the wiimote in a standard controller fashion rather than a gimmicky motion way.

Some games could have used more refinment on the controls, but others like SMB, it was just a matter of getting used to the Wiimote. Games that I had a hard time with at first, are cake now and much more enjoyable than just mashing a buttont and twiddling my thumbs.
I bought Red Steel, but returned it for a Classic Controller and Game Cube game. Its controls were actually quite good in comparison to a typical console FPS, they just needed more tweaking IMO, or more user adjustment settings, but the game as a whole was first gen rush. It's just like on a PC, where as you have games like Counter Strike, or COD, which have excellent controls, or Doom 3 which was clearly lacking in comparison. FPS games, RTS, or any game that require pointing in general will be best with the Wii's controls.
I would buy Wii Play, it's a great way to kill time with friends, but it's a limited addition, so might not be available by the time you buy a Wii, if you go ahead with a purhcase. The game is worth it just for the extra Wiimote.
The Virtual Console is awesome. I can't express enough how much I like this aspect of the Wii. It and the Cube games are definitely a way to bide time, if there's no Wii games available of your liking. I personally would like to get Trauma Center and Medal of Honor when it comes out. Even Sonic, since many are considering the best execution since the Geneisis days, so it's on my maybe list.
Anyway, I've had my Wii since November. I'm still paying Zelda TP. I'm just slow. :o
By June, there will be a huge surge of great games for the Wii. A few are coming by April.

Well there aren't many games out at the moment. It's doing what the DS did, good first party controller support, nothing from 3rd parties for 6 or so months. There has been a surge in dev kit purchases from other devs so expect a lot of (potentially crap, as the majority of 3rd party stuff usually is) games in the next year or so.
Kororinpa is the most fun marble game I've played, really great as multiplayer too! Paid 30 in shops but found it for £25 on eBay. Wouldn't pay more than that for this kind of game though.
Red Steel was alright, but totally bug ridden. I'd definitely buy a sequel as everything else is very much bang on.
Does Excite Truck count? Monster Games made that. I steered clear because of "reviews" here but I went out, played it, absolutely hooked on it now. I've never been so fixed into a game.

Hmm, I appreciate the comments. It seems like I'm not missing out on much waiting for a little bit then. I have a ton of papers due for Univ. in the next two months... I really hope that by the end of April/ beginning of May we really get a bigger picture of whats in store for Wii. I have to say that the 360 has met and exceeded my expectations, and I really hope the Wii can do the same.
I noticed the other day that Wiimotes are STILL sold out everywhere. I guess that the demand is there, but seriously, peripherals as well as consoles? I was under the impression since before launch that the Wii was going to be readily available.
...any FPS on the horizon for the wii (other than metroid, which some people don't call a FPS)?

If you've not played a Wii, than you're definately missing out on quite a bit. There's no buts about it, the system is an absolute blast and the only next-gen console that actually lived up to its hype. Which fortunately wasn't Nintendo's boasting, but from actual users. Its controls are the best thing to happen to gaming in a long time.
It's 4 months in, I still play my Wii every day and every weekend with friends. And of course being 4 months in now, we all want more. I leave my Wii on in the background, which is something I've never done with a console. I get my news on it every day. :o
The reason peripherals are still selling out along with the console, is because the Wii is absolutely great for playing with friends. Most games allow up to 4 people and are way more fun on average than much of what I've personally played on any other console. Wii Sports alone is worth the price of Wii. It's a great way to have fun and even loose some weight. It alone is probaly responsible for much of the demand for the Wii.
I'm going to try Medal of Honor and have been contemplating COD3, but Metroid which I'll ramble about, is the only one I expect to be executed properly on the Wii.
Metroid 1 and 2 were more FPS adventure games than a run of the mill FPS like Halo as an example. To pick on Halo, I enjoyed it immensely for the multi-player aspect, but as a single player game it doesn't hold a candle to MP1. It's simply too repetitive and really falls apart compared to Metroid. MP3 in the sense of controls and online play will be a true FPS, but will still have the adventure element that many of us like for single play. With the prior ones, they offered a lock-on feature, which helped to get around the inherent flaw with thumb-stick-aiming, as in it's too slow for fast action when precision is needed. The Wiimote being a true pointer can keep up like a mouse. At first I thought this lock-on feature would be cheating, but the game was designed quite well to accomadate this setup and still was very challenging.
I would only wait, if you don't play games with others and already have several games on your plate. But if you do have gaming partys, than pick one up asap. Wiiplay and Wii Sports are worth months of fun.
Anyway, if you wait too long, than how will you find time to play all of the current games that are worth it and the new ones coming out shortly? ;)

I love my Wii. I have kind of fallen off of gaming the past couple of years, but that all changed the day I purchased a Wii. I found myself playing games for hours on end, which I hadn't done in a long long while.
Dragon Ball Z I thought was awesome. The way the implemented the motion with the fighting was definitely cool. From what I hear of the new Mortal Kombat they are going to get the controls even better.
Madden can't be beat on the Wii. Using the motion sensing to pass, kick, juke, and stiff arm is just amazing.
COD3 was awesome. Definitely the best shooter out for the Wii to date. Loved tilting the Wiimote to peak around corners. I also liked shaking the controls and swinging them like a bat to kill Nazis face to face.
NFS Carbon, while a mediocre game, was made even better by use of the Wiimote. I switched it up from standard steering with one controller to what I think was a better set up. Using the Wiimote as the gas (hold flat) and brake (pull up). A tilt of the nunchuck was used to steer and made steering very precise. My friend liked the Wii version over the 360 version immensely, and this is coming from a graphics whore.
The controls in Zelda seem kind of gimmicky, but at the same time it is cool to be able to play it in this new way.
SSX, which I just picked up today, is amazing so far. Definitely a steep learning curve to the game. Definitely more for the people who will actually take the time to perfect the motions that go along with the tricks. Definitely proves that just because Wii has motion controllers doesn't mean it is going to be easy.
Wii Sports alone has spent more time in the Wii than any other game. Best game for multiplayer, and for drinking. This game alone is worth the price of admission.
I don't consider myself a casual gamer. I don't think anyone who logs 30 hours into one game in a week can be considered casual. I just have fallen off of gaming for a while because it seemed stale. In that sense Wii is like a breath of fresh air. A word of caution; when you first start to play you will have tons of wtf moments. They definitely deterred me for about the first week, but once you get used to the controls, and stop getting sore arms from hours of playing, it is a blast. The control scheme can get old, and at times you would much rather just relax with a classic control setup, but that is what your 360 is for.
Cliff notes:
Wii = Greatness

If you've already got a 360, then you're losing nothing over buying a Wii. If party games are your thing, then it'll probably be the best thing you ever bought.
But yeah, Wii Sports is, as of right now, the best implementation of Wii controls that I've used so far. Elebits is a lot of fun, I've been hooked on Excite Truck for quite awhile, and I honestly really enjoy playing Red Steel.
On the horizon, though, is Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Smash Bros. Brawl, three games that I would consider to be absolute must haves. From what I hear about Prime and Galaxy, the controls are exactly how controls need to be on the Wii. Wii's incredible sales numbers are also smacking developers upside the head, so I expect some amazing games to start poring out soon, much like what happened with the DS.
All in all, I'd say the thing is a hella solid investment. There's few things more awesome than holding a Wiimote in one hand and a beer in the other with a room of about 10 people, taking turns playing 4 player Wii Tennis, screaming profanity at each other. that's my idea of the true multiplayer experience.

haha, I definitely like the idea of multiplayer gongshows on the wii...
I'm just wondering too... not to knock those of you that may have camped for a wii, but I just find something a bit off-putting about having to practically sell myself for a games console... I've looked around a few times for wii's, but it seems like people are still really ready to call stores everyday and check shipments online etc. etc.
are there any places where you can go to any given store and possibly find one of these consoles around? how did you all get them!

Agreed.
I've bought 8 wii games excluding Wii sports (bundled with the system) and none of them have made the wii remote feel anything other than just a tacked on control system, bar the 1 game that came with the system.
I am starting to doubt the Wii, and yet when I first got it I was glowing with praise. Now...... I'm not too sure developers will ever grasp it (pun intended).
Kororinpa is the most fun marble game I've played, really great as multiplayer too!

Quite the pessimist MacRumorUser. :)
I look forward to Metroid where I'll actualy be able to aim the canon this time around, (Holding down the R-button doesn't count.) then reach and twist my wrist to open a door instead of just shooting the dam thing.
I also like the option of tilting the Wiimote for gliding my MonkeyBall, or landing a spaceship. It's much more enjoyable than a thumb-stick. I'll still prefer a flightstick when playing a full on simulator, but gliding and flying the birds, it's just more fun with the Wiimote.
Anyway, it has only been 4 months and for some things the Wiimote is clearly superior over other console inputs *cough* *pointing* and as devlopers get used to the Wii's strenghs and weaknesses, they'll definately find a happy medium and hopefully not go overboard where it's not necessary. Nintendo didn't exactly abandon the best traits of last generation, they've only added to the areas that were cleary lacking. The first release of DS games were mostly fluff, but not even a year later, the DS was full of some great games, some of the best ones I've played in ages. Finally we can play sport games and not have to watch some simpleton power-meter, while waiting for the right time to do something excitng, like press a button. *joy* That was fun the first 10 billion times I tried it and was certailny great back in the stone age when it was new.

I thought Super Paper Mario used the Wiimote in the old school fashion, like you would when playing the VC version of Super Mario Bros. for NES. I haven't read anything about using the Wiimote as a point.
It is, however, used as a pointer in Super Mario Galaxy, alongside the nunchuck controller.
I could be wrong about Super Paper Mario, though.

Don't buy any first person shooter games for the Wii. I played call of duty and it was horrible. Trying to aim a rifle was very annoying. Swinging a sword like in red steel was not very accurate. I don't recommend you to buy that game. The Wii will be just like the gamecube. It will have Zelda, Mario, and metroid and then a few other games like Mario Cart and Smash Bros. After those games I can't see the Wii getting many other games. Don't buy the madden football game because its a joke on the Wii. Don't take my word for it go buy a few magazines and read some reviews. They will tell you the same things. If you like Excite Truck and Zelda then your good to go. Where are the RPG's. Same as the cube. No where.

The camera clipped through objects in the age old fashion yes, but bugs? Where?
The camera clipped through object.... but worst of all there was zero control of the camera meaning most of the time your rolling a ball towards the screen unable to see what was coming up. If that is not a MASSIVE design flaw, and utterly unforgivable in this style of game then I don't know what is.
Added to the fact that the game does not know the difference between 16:9 and anamorphic, meaning if your hooked up to a LCD TV via component and play the game, it will have MASSIVE borders if you choose 16:9 from it's menu, and therefore you will have to put it to 4:3 which is still the wrong aspect ratio.
Then there are annoying gameplay glitches & bugs such as being able to roll through some of the barriers that are meant to protect you from falling off the path. This happens more towards the last remaining levels which is then more frustrating as these are the most difficult levels. I have also experienced rolling off one platform onto another and then falling through the platform I just landed on.
The game is bugged up, suffers from a criminaly bad camera and makes the fatal mistake too many times of causing you death and fustration simply because of the awful camera control (or lack of). For a game about navigating platforms, not being able to see is the biggest flaw EVER, and falling through them on occasion just adds a nice cherry on top.
If your 'oblivion' is unplaybable argument / stance / position is to be respected, then you have a bit of cheek to look the other way when this game is concerned.
Quite the pessimist MacRumorUser. :)<]=)
Heck I'm open to be bowled over again, maybe Wing Island and Eledee's (Elebits in Europe) might offer some relief to my Wii March blues. But I'm just calling it as I see it with the games I have at this point.
Wii Sports is nearly perfect for showing how impressive the wii remote could be, but so far no other 'full' game has even got close, which is quite a shame.

I have been having a lot of fun with the following games:
- Zelda (unlike some, I think the controls work very well - heck, I even find having the control separated into two parts to be an ergonomic improvement over standard controllers)
- Elebits
- Rayman: Raving Rabbids
So far, these are the only games I have for the Wii (other than my gamecube library). However, I'm only holding off on buying Trauma Center because I have too many games to finish as it is, especially considering that I'll be picking up Super Paper Mario shortly after it comes out in a week.
So, in a week I will own what I consider to be 5 quality games for the Wii (counting Wii Sports), that use the controls well. When I finally get Trauma Center, that will put it up to 6. Pretty good for a console that's about 3 months old.
Also, enough people have said good things about Excite Truck that I might have to get that, too. :)

What a ridiculous post. If you read ANY review that is reviewing a first person shooter, you will see that nearly every review is saying that this interface is just as good and sometimes better than the keyboard and mouse configuration.
Sure, there are games out there for the Wii that aren't that great. But what console can say that every game available for it is amazing? None. And this will always be the case. There will always be crap out there, along with the good stuff.
The Wii is brand new. There are going to be missteps from developers standpoint before they really get the hang of the Wii. It is new technology. These things take time. You can't expect a new console to be launched and then have a killer library of games off the bat.
Or maybe you can, actually, in the Wii's case. You have the built in library of whatever you may have for Gamecube (or now have the option of buying Gamecube games because you now have a Gamecube, in essence) plus the Virtual Console.
I'm tired of hearing these crap responses. It is one thing if you don't like the Wii, that is fine. If you want to bring up some faults that it has, do so by backing up your statements. Don't say that Call of Duty was crap when a lot of reviewers out there are saying it is a better single player game than its counterpart on the 360 BECAUSE of the Wii's control.

Games I have:
Red Steel - I never understand what people are talking about when they say that the game is buggy. I also don't know why people don't like it. I think it's really fun. I'm only about half way through it but I'm really enjoying it thus far.
Zelda: TP - Possibly the best game I've ever played.
Excite Truck - Reviews weren't the best but i picked it up and this game is freakin awesome. The sense of speed is a lot faster than Need For Speed Carbon for Wii. I got my friend hooked and when he bought a Wii a few days ago it was the first thing he picked up.
Wii Play - Definitely a game to play with other people. There are only a couple of the games that i enjoy playing single player, but get a bunch of people together and it gets a lot more fun.
Wii Sports - Holy crap-fest is this game amazing. This game is so much fun. The more people you have the better but even single player it's really fun (although the tennis isn't challenging enough, but i still play it to how high my score will go).
Metal Slug Anthology - Just picked it up the other day. I've only gone through the first game but I'm really enjoying it for if nothing else the memories that the series has given me throughout my childhood while spending way too much time and way too much money at the local arcade. It's rather easy since by default they give you unlimited credits but you can change that in the options as well as adjust the difficulty level (the game is quite hard at normal difficulty, only took me 36 continues or something like that :) ). Even with unlimited continues the beauty and mayhem is way too fun. I'm looking forward to taking this over to my friends house to play some multiplayer Metal Slug in true Contra-type fashion. Should be fun.

I know exactly what you mean! I didn't buy it because of the ratings. Had a play on my mates system, soon as my student loan comes in I'm buying this for myself. It's great in that my 14 year old sister beats me at the game half of the time! She's like some kind of secret super child gamer or something. But the sense of speed is mad, it's the first game I've played that has actually got me excited, got the heart pounding! A shame that F-Zero WX is such a way away.
And that's what I like about the Wii - it's leveled the field.

Generally, I'd say read reviews very carefully to determine who gets the controls right and who's tacked-on. This may seem to be "duh" advice, but I've found that if you amalgamate IGN, 1Up, Gamespot, and some others, a consensus emerges to whether or not the game "gets it."
Having done so & planned purchases accordingly, I've got Zelda, Rayman, Elebits, WarioWare, & DBZ. Three of them are ground-up done for Wii and do it justice. Two have "tacked-on" controls but still make sense & don't suffer for it. Zelda is probably comparable to using a standard controller, but with better aiming. DBZ, in my & many opinions, is actually better than the standard PS2 version - it's a great game that consumes RPG-esque amounts of time, but certainly is not everyone's cup of tea.
By the same token, I've avoided racing games, Red Steel, Marvel, etc., based on reviews saying the controls don't hack it. Judging by the comments here, those are the right decisions.
Haven't had funds for Trauma Center - and now maybe Excite Truck, based on a collective reevaluation - but those also seem worthwhile.
There's already enough good Wii games to keep you busy if you're just buying a system now. This number will triple or more by year's end. I'd say get one, if you can.

I really like Madden, Warioware, and trauma center. Although it is short and very simple, trauma center is really fun.

I currently "only" have a 360, but I know I'll get a Wii sooner or later, depending on when Nintendo ramps up production and/or demand falls off a bit.
Demand is high as is production.
The units available for sale pales in comparison to the demand therefore don't expect to walk into a store and find a pile of Wii's readily available anytime soon (unless you live in the middle of nowhere). You either get lucky finding one (like I did and many others have) or you don't. How much you want one will decide whether or not you call or frequently stop by retailers to see if they have a restock in or not.
Have the majority of developers REALLY grasped the concept of the wiimote yet? Or are the 1st party games the ones with the best implementation of the controls?
No. The system is only a few months old. I don't expect anything jaw-dropping yet. The DS didn't get those types of games until at least 9-10 months after release; I expect the same with the Wii. 8-9 out of 10 games will have tacked on features most likely at least until late summer or early fall.
Secondly, which games are the most fun to play? Obviously Zelda is a no-brainer, but other than Zelda are there any really good titles out that combine good use of the wiimote with good gameplay?
Wii Sports, bar none. You already know about Zelda.
Basically I want to know which games are worth considering getting for Wii OVER the 360...
If someone is buying a system with nothing at home already, the only incentive on a Wii over a 360 is a cheaper price. Otherwise, the 360 is arguably the best pure gaming system to own right now. 360 has the most games worth owning and playing, without question. That doesn't mean the Wii or Ps3 are shat, but their game libraries have a lot of catching up to do (which should start happening at the 1 year mark for each console).
If you already own a 360 (which you said you do)...buying a Wii is a do or do not situation. Do you really want one now? Or can you wait until there's more out for it? If you wait, by the time you buy one, they will be readily available for walk-ins to any retailer.
I noticed the other day that Wiimotes are STILL sold out everywhere. I guess that the demand is there, but seriously, peripherals as well as consoles? I was under the impression since before launch that the Wii was going to be readily available.
I see Wiimotes in stock half the time I'm out shopping somewhere. It's the same as the consoles...you either get lucky and find them, or you don't. :o

Does Excite Truck count? Monster Games made that. I steered clear because of "reviews" here but I went out, played it, absolutely hooked on it now. I've never been so fixed into a game.
Excite Truck is an awesome game. The first racing game I've actually enjoyed.
You can press A to attack also. Plus there are special moves that you can buy and level up. It can be a fun game. I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I think that will make it even more fun.

I was only comparing it to the 360 and PS3 incarnations, where it does. But yes, compared to the PS2, Xbox, PC, etc versions it is a bit lower.
My bad.... Unfortunately, Madden has been getting worse and worse. I only hope that the NFL deal gets cut short, and the 2K series is resurrected.

You hold the controller old school style, sideways like a d pad with two buttons. there is no pointing or motion gimmicks. Unless of course Nintendo Power is spreading false rumors about 1st party games.. i hate it when they do that :p
errr...
"The March 2007 issue of Nintendo Power Magazine included additional information about Super Paper Mario. As the player progresses he will pick up new allies called Pixls, which give the player new ways to use the Wii Remote in game. For example, one Pixl, named Tippy, allows the player to use the remote as a pointer, using it to find hidden objects and learn about enemies."
"Tippy (a butterfly) allows you to search areas for secrets, you can point the Wiimote at the screen to spotlight hidden doors or learn info about the enemy. When you jump on an enemy, if you shake the Wiimote you can gain extra points."

Agreed. I loved the 2k games. I remember how amazing NFL2K on the Dreamcast was.
Apparently Visual Concepts has started production on a non-NFL football game that they're really psyched about. Might be the next best thing to an NFL2K resurrection.

To answer your first question, I think most of the 3rd party games I have played don't grasp the controls well. I think this is probably because many developers were thrown off by the success of the Wii and only ported existing games with tacked on controls. Also, it is interesting that most of the graphics don't take advantage of the Wii because I have GC games that look better. Alot of the graphics look like the PS2...
The best games I have played (in order) for the Wii are: Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Madden 07, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Elebits, Trauma Center. I haven't played them but Sonic or SSX Blur might be OK too. I expect Super Paper Mario to be good when it comes out in April and I hope a few of the third party games before then will be decent. If we are lucky, either Godfather, Scarface, Prince of Persia, TMNT, Heat Seeker, or Medal of Honor will be good...In the long run, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Sadness, Resident Evil, Disaster: Day of Distruction, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero all look interesting to me...

What the hell people? Seriously, what the hell? Can't we talk about a subject without it becoming an arguing amount how one system or another is horrible and the company is pulling bs tactics on us?
To quote Huey Freeman, "And stop the d*** [arguing]! Act like you got some godd*** sense people!"
To the original poster, some developers have it, some definitely do not. Excite Truck, Trauma Center, and *some* of Super Monkey Ball are really good. I've also played but don't own Elebits and thought the controls were good. I've also played some games that don't have good control, but I didn't play them for that long.
As other people have pointed out, it took the DS awhile to get some of it's better games pumped out, and some of them still don't have it (and I'm still waiting on Zelda for the DS Nintendo!!!!!). Give the Wii a bit if you don't really want one right now, better games will come. That being said, I love mine, so if you get one now there are games out there that are fun.
****One important thing! A lot of games take a bit to get use to! This is a new way of controlling games, and some games that you may think have bad controls when you pick up will turn into games that have controls you love after some practice. Then again, they might not. Renting is a good option to check this out. And of course, it will vary by person. Some will love the controls from a game while others will hate them.

The only issue I have is with VC.
If I have the game on cartridge, can I please download the game for free?

Although Sony does something similar for PSN
Pay for and download PS1 games for PSP.
Anywho........:p

there is a difference, product delivery is MORE expensive for the company when talking about such upgrades(VHS to DVD to HD)
Ninty is saving money by offering it via download(they don't have to "package" anything), and with Sony you don't HAVE to buy the PS1 games.
(only if you want to play them on your PSP, which is an enhancement)
I can still play all my PS1 + PS2 titles on my PS3 for free WITH enhancements(upscaling, AA, etc.)
^thats true B/C IMHO
but liek we agree upon -opinions vary ;)

Our PS3's play 1/4 of PS2 games. That's 25% b/c
*assuming there was 4000 PS2 games. I've no idea how many there actually are.
Still. I should be offered free SD downloads then. Same goes for my LP and CD collection, dammit.

yes, but PS b/C will expand, probably at a faster rate than VC game releases.
and I agree about the music, if my CD is damaged/stolen/etc - I have already purchased the rights to listen to it, I should be able to download it or somehow receive another copy
(another copy would cost more - packaging + shipping)
They(many companies) allow this with online purchased DRM music.
I just wish DRM woudl go away.

I agree to some extent, but I'm paying for the convenience of having the game on my Wii instead of having to hook up the ol' SNES.
It's just not a realistic expectation that you would be able to download games for free because there's no way of proving ownership.
Plus the prices are reasonable enough that I don't mind droppin eight bucks on Super Mario World, Link To The Past or Donkey Kong Kountry. :)

What's sad on my part, is that I have my N64 hooked up next to my Wii and I'm still contemplating buying the games I already own for the convinience of having them in the Wii. If anything I like the Classic Controller more so than the N64 controller, so that's just another reason I would buy them again.

Be patient and in due time I'm sure Nintendo will have 'something' for you to buy at roughly that price point. It might not provide much entertainment value, but I'm sure people like you will find some way to justify the purchase. Once people start purchasing skins and other non-game virtual items for 100 points, it's all over for those of us who collectively have already payed R-Type's development costs many times over in the arcades and are waiting for the best of these 8-bit titles to dip down to $4 or $5.

I sincerely hope Nintendo doesn't charge for skins. I've always found that disgusting (phones, 360, MSN) to pay for a graphic that a hobbyist could have done better.
I'm hoping they'll start to do "platinum" editions of games once they get so many downloads, halving the price or whatever. That'd be nice. Or small indie games. Would be nice. I just hope they don't turn into the Marketplace with needless things to buy, though I suppose it's nice in that Nintendo said their first party games will have free downloads, w00t!

I just wanted to zero my account before I begin my next wave of VC purchases. People like me, what does that mean? Are you inferring that I'm cheap? ;) Actually I'm just stingy. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif
I've pumped countless quarters into R-Type. I also owned it for the Sega Master System. I've never beat it though. I can only get to the end of level 4 and I've played this game since its introduction. :o
Here's my current VC games;
Dungeon Vomit, I mean "Explorer"
Gunstar Heros
Contra 3
R-Type
R-Type 3
Street Fighter 2
Zelda NES
Zelda SNES
I figure for 100pts I should be able to get a game like this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_(video_game)).
Anyway, if I buy Zelda 64, a NES game, and a TG16 game, I'll have zeroed the account. So I guess I'll buy 2000 pts this time around.

If you haven't played Ocarina, get that. If you have, I would recommend getting Kirby's Adventure and Super Castlevania IV. I just beat Gunstar Heroes and these two are very fun. Kirby seems too easy at first, but I'm on level 4 and it is getting much harder...
It looks like you like SHMUPs, I'm surprised you didn't get Gradius as well...
So far I have: LoZ, SMB, Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, ALttP, SMW, Castlevania IV, Gunstar Heroes, SM64, OoT
Of whats left, I'm considering getting Donkey Kong Country and Contra 3 but I haven't gotten those because I remember DKC being too easy and Contra 3 being too hard. So basically, I've been saving those points for a few upcoming games like SMB3 and PunchOut.
I absolutely love NES games (I guess they remind me of my youth) so I hope some of the good ones like: Little Nemo, Star Tropics, River City Ransom, Ducktales, Mega Man 2, Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden 2 come out soon...I'm trying to pick the best out of the series for most games because I don't want to waste my money on too many similar games (with the exception of Mario and Zelda of course)...

I like Gradius and even have it on my Nokia. I'm just waiting for Life Force to come out before I buy another shooter. I especially like 2 player shootemups like Contra 3 (Dam them for no cheats.) and Gunstar Hero and I can't wait for Forgoten Worlds to come out. :)
Is Kirby better than Kid Icarus? I was thinking about getting Icarus or Donkey Kong. Super CV is also on my want list, I just finished CV PoR on the DS. :)

I haven't been able to get into Kid Icarus yet because it is so hard. You only have 1 life and if you fall from a platform you die and have to go back to the beginning of the level. So basically, you have to play the levels over and over until you get them perfect and then suspend the game when you get to a stopping point. There is some of this in most of the old games but usually you get a continue or more than one life...Thankfully, there is a password system at least. The other thing is that the controls don't seem perfect. You can't really jump and shoot at the same time effectively (at least I can't). So, I have to take it pretty slow through the levels.
Kirby is really fun. As I said before, it seems too easy at first. But it does get harder as you go along. When I was a kid, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it because I wouldn't have been able to see past the cutesy facade, but it does have some fairly brilliant gameplay. I wouldn't recommend the original Donkey Kong over Kirby or Kid Icarus because it lacks depth and isn't as good as the original arcade version but Donkey Kong Country might be worth looking at. Personally, I think Kirby is the best but everybody has their own likes and dislikes...
If you don't know what to get, go to Youtube and watch videos of the first levels of the games you are thinking about getting first.
Castlevania IV and III (if it comes out) should fill my Vampire hunting habit unless they decide to give us Saturn games and SotN.

When earlier I wrote 'people like you [will find some way to justify such a purchase]', I wasn't sure exactly what I meant by 'people like you'. At this point I think it's fair to say, "collectors and others consumers motivated by factors other than pure entertainment" (fair statement considering you just mentioned already being able to play the same game on another console hooked up adjacent to your Wii). However in your case (and probably in mine in the near future), form factor will be a strong motivator, as consolidating one's Nintendo platforms into one sleek unit could be desirable for a number of reasons (resale value of the wii to those without Wii internet connectivity, wife/husband/parent/roomate's complaints of clutter, etc).

This is a big factor for me for sure. Hopefully, with the next Nintendo platform they will let you tranfer over all of your VC downloads. If they don't I will be angry for sure.
It is one thing to tie the games to one console (although as others have said, a controller would have been more desirable) but if a new generation comes out and they refuse to allow transfers, the Wii could be my last Nintendo console...I am encouraged though because all your VC downloads show up on your Nintendo registered items...

There's a bit of collecting going on, especially for Zelda. I've already played each one, except Zelda 2. As raggedjimmi pointed out the new controller alone really makes the Wii a great home for these games. Most of my games were bought purely for entertaminment. R-Type for myself, SF2 and others to play with friends.
Form factor is exactly why I'll gladly buy games from the VC, even if I already own them. The Wii is very convenient. It's easy to transport, plugs into any TV, and can support up to 8 controllers. I went out of my way to find Cube arcade sticks after I bought it and look forward to more fighting games. The NeoGeo is on its way in Japan, so I have my fingers crossed for a US release. Overall the VC option was a pleasent surprise for me and it's easily one of my favorite features about the Wii. It's an option I really hadn't even considered using before I bought one.
R-Type 3 isn't bad, it's just no R-Type. Still worth getting, but I wish it would have been 2 player simultaneously play.

Nintendo would piss me off big time if they took that route. I'm sure they'll do the right thing though. It wouldn't take much to prep each game for a newer console in 6 or 7 years.
I'm still wondering how I can transfer my games to another Wii console, if my current one dies?
When I was with Verizon, I had a few games I had purchased for reference when building demos. When I upgraded to a newer phone, the games were automatically registered/moved to that phone, so maybe Nintendo has a similar setup?

Bummer about Donkey Kong. The only reason I wanted it, was because of Tetris DS's DK theme for Push Tetris. :) I never could get past the CG rendered look of DKC, so was too shallow to play it. :o

Wii Sports is what draws people in. People that have never gamed absolutely love tennis, golf, bowling, and even boxing. No one seems to mind that everyone looks like Fisher-Price people. Baseball is the only one whose gameplay is a bit lame, but it's still pretty fun.
Zelda is also a blast, and even the fishing "mini game" is fun on the Wii. Another friend at work who has it on the Game Cube doesn't even do the fishing game because it's so boring - so there's an example something that seems lame until it's played on the Wii.
My kids love monkeyball (I haven't played it) but they seemed to think that was a game where the controller was integrated quite well. They all said that they'd never make a "game-cube" version, because it wouldn't be as fun.
They still play the Game Cube games on it once in a while too, but for the most part, the Wii games are just a whole lot more fun, especially when there's a lot of people over.

As a kid, I beat Kid Icarus, but couldn't make it more than about 2/3 of the way through Ghosts n' Goblins. It was hard, but not -that- hard (based on what I remember).
Don't know about the controls, though. It's been so long, I don't recall if there was any "stiffness", and maybe this is an emulation artifact. I certainly don't remember bad controls, but that was a long time ago. :)

The Wii is a fun system, even more fun if you have some friends over. Here's the games that me and my brothers have collected and my brief thoughts on them. :)
WiiPlay - Very fun, especially with a friend. The games may get old fast by yourself, but competing after a friend makes things exciting. Plus it comes with the WiiMote, so it's hard to say no.
WiiSports - The game that ships with the system, very fun and unique. You may get bored with it after a while if it's your only game. But, even after you've played Zelda you'll go back to WiiSports once and a while for some fun.
Sonic and the Secret Rings - Much better than the previous XBox360/PS3 versions, this one isn't bad! Uses the WiiMote pretty well and is a lot of fun to play. The story isn't too bad, and the graphics are pretty awesome!
Rayman: Raving Rabbits - One of my favorite games. Tons of mini games, you will find yourself laughing during most of them, and they're very fresh and fun.
Zelda: TP - No complaints here, except for I have like 4-5 more dungeons to get through. It's really fun and challenging, I don't find the use of the WiiMote to be a burden on the game. :p
Elebits - The story is slow along with the cruddy cut scenes, but if you can get past those you'll have a lot of fun zapping little electric creatures. ;)
Super Monkey Ball: BB - This can get pretty challenging too, but it's a lot of fun. There are also a lot of mini games too, but then again hardly any Wii games don't have mini-games! :p
WarioWare Smooth Moves - Don't let the box fool you. This isn't for 1 player only. If you play with friends you just pass the WiiMote around. This continues the fun of the WarioWare series, it's a lot of fun - especially with some friends. :D
All in all the Wii is pretty great. The virtual console is also a great feature, and the weather, news, and internet channels add a lot of value too.

I don't recall Kid Icarus ever having this problem; I remember Pit (the main character) being able to fall from heights with no problem just like Samus in Metroid.
Kid Icarus would be better if they had left in the password feature; I don't know why they took it out. I know they said they couldn't code it properly or something, but I call BS on that. I just think they didn't want people using the code to finish the game (Icarus fights Medusa angels). :)

Exactly, the screen follows you up and if you fall off of the bottom of the screen you die. There are plenty of precarious jumps where it is easy to do this...Especially if you are being attacked when you jump...The controls are Ok but they feel dated for sure.
I'm not saying it isn't worth buying because the Wiis suspend feature helps the difficulty alot...But if you are easily frustrated there are better purchases...

I'm not saying it isn't worth buying because the Wiis suspend feature helps the difficulty alot...But if you are easily frustrated there are better purchases...
Yeah, I forgot about that. Like Agilus said, it's been a long time.
But I do still have nightmares about those damn eggplant wizard guys that hit you with an eggplant and turn you into one and then you're screwed until you find one of the (nearly impossible to find) "clinic" places that turn you normal again. Until then, you run around as an eggplant with feet and you can't attack or anything and it's just crazy. :D

Alright lads!
Are you going to welcome me into the Wii fellowship? I just picked one up about a half hour ago, haven't opened the box yet.
I've decided that I won't open it until im done my homework for tonight.
A friend of mine works at Toys R Us, and they got 1 wii today, and he managed to put it aside for me. Got a second wiimote, but no extra nunchuck.
I decided I would get SSX Blur as my starter game, probably pick up some used ones later (Zelda, Excite Truck). So, I await to be seduced mercilessly as Jimmi seems to have been... hahaha - all in good fun mate
-yes I am aware that I just made a hypocrite of myself for buying an EA game.

Welcome fellow gamer. :)
Now buy a Classic Controller and begin downloading VC games. :o
Kirby NES rocks!!! A Wii version should be fantastic.
Anyway, if SSX is cool, I'll probably get it. I enjoyed earlier verions and used to play 4 player split screen on my friend's XBox. Unless that was another snowboarding game?

As a kid, I beat Kid Icarus, but couldn't make it more than about 2/3 of the way through Ghosts n' Goblins. It was hard, but not -that- hard (based on what I remember).
Don't know about the controls, though. It's been so long, I don't recall if there was any "stiffness", and maybe this is an emulation artifact. I certainly don't remember bad controls, but that was a long time ago. :)
I could beat both the Genesis version and arcade version of Gn'G without continuing. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif
I'll get KI, just so I can experience it. Kirby wasn't on my list, so I'm glad I took ddrueckhammer's advice and purchased it. Sooo much fun. :)
What I mean by stiffness, are games like MegaMan on the NES, where as your the controls are rather limiting. Just not very fluent compared to some of the better platformers. Kirby's controls are quite good IMO for reference.

Yup, thats SSX... I guess that SSX tricky, like I said before, was one of the last EA games I really enjoyed. Seeing as its one of the few non-minigame titles out for the Wii, I figured I'd give it a go. Reviews were really mixed, but I saw an average of about 8-8.2
Anything I NEED to know about wii gaming? All I know about this gen is 360... I can offer plenty of advice that way

Just invest in some good rechargable batteries. The included batteries are quite poor and will die unexpectedly. Also, if your batteries are really low, the remote might loose connection. Happened when my Wiimote was in the red and I was fighting away in Zelda. Next thing I knew my guy was walking into a wall.
I have 2500 mHa Energizers now and they last about 2 weeks on average per charge. I've seen those 15 minute chargers at Coscto, but I don't know if they're any good. I was thinking about getting one if I can use my current batteries with it.
And once again, buy a Classic Controller and begin the VC fun. :)
SSX is now on my purchase list. Im wondering if I should get it over Trauma Center?
I'm waiting for Mass Effect + keyboard + mouse support to be added to the 360, then I'll most likely pick one up, depending on needs at that time. If they don't add mouse support to that game, I'll be very sad. :(

Those batteries are frickin' awesome and a must-own for wireless controllers and/or digital cameras. :D
Right after we got our 360 in November, after we blew through 2 sets of batteries in each controller (granted, they lasted awhile but still), I knew we needed some rechargeables. We got 2 of the 4 packs of the 2500 mHa Energizers plus the regular time (12 hour?) 4 socket wall charger...I think it was around $40 total for everything? ($20 for the charger, $10 each for the 4 packs of batteries) We use the batteries in our 2 360 controllers + our digital camera (and now our 1 Wiimote). We'll probably go get another 4 pack once we get WiiPlay+another Wiimote so we've got reserves.

Wow. I never played those versions, but if they were as hard as I remember GnG being, then that took some talent/dedication. :)

I guess I just don't understand. When I think of the MegaMan controls, I don't think of them as stiff or limiting, either. I mean, you have more things you can do in Kirby, like fly and swim, but the movement was fairly fast and you can control your jumps in the air (I think).... When I think of stiff or slow controls, I think of ... drunk Conker in Conker's Bad Fur Day. :) Actually, the original Castlevania fits my definition for stiff controls, now that I think of it.

I love that game but its so damn hardcore...... :o
I loved Super Ghouls & Ghosts on the Snes too, except when I finished the bloody game it makes you start all the away from scratch again to find a hidden item you couldn't get the first time through. MAJOR annoying...

Maybe someday, but not today. Too many other games to finish to warrant another purchase right away. :)

- Thank-you, its good to be here ;)
So, I thought I'd give some people a heads up on SSX Blur:
I refrained from posting much about it yesterday because a- I just got a wii and b- It was the first game I really played.
So, after a day my opinions have better developed:
The game looks great - for what I expected from the Wii. Having heard that the graphics were about equal to later Xbox games, I wasn't expecting too too much.
Most of the complaints about this game had to do with the controls. I found them a bit difficult last night, but one must remember that it was my first experience with a wii. Today, I found them much more adaptable, and I'm getting the hang of them better and better. The bottom line is that this game isn't for the coveted "non-gamer" audience. It's basically a single-player title that you can have fun playing for extended periods and mastering. It will take you a bit just to get your bearings on the mountain, but after that, the actual boarding is straightforward.
The wiimote really takes this game in a different direction; whereas previous SSX titles relied upon memorizing button combos, you now have to memorize certain wrist movements.
The one thing I miss in this title is the voices. In SSX Tricky, there was a loud booming voice, probably the UT2004 announcer's cousin, who came on and said "EA....BIG!". The characters also had silly little rhetorical comments that they chimed in as they rode down the mountain. Lastly, Rahzel as realtime commentator is sadly absent from this game.
All in all, I'm glad I sprung for this game though... I'll wait and get Zelda once I have a bit more time in the summer...
By the way, if you have the means, Wii60 is the way to go. Go pick up a 360, crackdown, gears of war and oblivion to go with your Wii and you'll have more gaming than you can deal with...

A quick run-down on the games I've got for my Wii so far...
Wii Sports
Great fun. All of the sports are good for party-games, and a couple (Tennis, Golf, Bowling, plus the Training and Fitness events) are good for lasting fun. I try to fit in a Wii Sports Fitness test every day.
Red Steel
Actually better than the reviews (IMHO!). It's not trying to be 'best of class' by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still got plenty of 'must keep playing'-ness to it :) Wiimote control becomes second nature eventually.
Call Of Duty 3
Takes some getting used to. As a faster-paced game than Red Steel, the Wiimote can be frustrating. But there are more than a few moments of 'hey that's cool'.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
If you enjoy the style of the single-player game, it's great. Wiimote control is a natural fit for the game, although you have to keep your reactions sharp to progress well. Party games are occasionally great, but some should be played once and forgotten.
Need For Speed: Carbon
Simply the best version of any of these games on any platform I've played. With a decent car setup, driving with the Wiimote as a steering wheel is excellent fun. The car reacts well to the movements, with driving actually being quite immersive and responsive with the Wiimote. Remember to hold that A button for some insane oversteer! Nothing quite like pulling yourself out of an impending spin by applying opposite lock with the wiimote :)
Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Now... I've not actually played this seriously yet! But I intend to spend some time on it soon. All reviews seem to indicate that Wiimote control is implemented well.
So, yeah - I think developers are doing well with the Wiimote. Bear in mind that game reviewers are just people like the rest of us, and aren't necessarily 'ultimate' gamers. For example, the Wiimote control of first-person shooters tended to get criticised. Initially, I found it tough too - particularly turning the character to look left and right. But then I realised my mistake. A decade-and-a-half of FPS playing has taught me that to kill a target, it has to be in the middle of the screen. This isn't how a game like Red Steel works - it's quite a revalation to realise that if it's on-screen, I can shoot it just by pointing. I don't need to turn and point the actual character directly at the target. To begin with, I was trying to do that and was getting frustrated with the movement controls.
All the above games are pretty much launch titles, so all in all, it's not too shabby.
