In a surprising turn of events, the PSP has beaten off the Wii and PS3, selling more than both consoles in Japan last week.

The latest weekly sales figures for Japan reveal that Sony's portable placed second in the hardware sales chart for the week ending 25 February, with unit sales of 96,750.

This falls short only of the still storming DS, which sold 146,250 units according to figures on vgcharts.org.

However the PSP beat even the mighty DS in the software sales chart in the same period, selling 808,750 games compared with 618,250 for the DS.

The surge could be put down to the recent release of Capcom's Monster Hunter Freedom 2, a co-op-enabled monster catching/battling game, which topped the software charts with a colossal 755,500 copies sold. Second down was Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri, with 90,500 sales.

Could this be the start of the revival of PSP?source (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=159052)
I don't think its the start of a revival, only the continued release of solid software.
Sony still has a ways to go, but they are getting much better.
Just release some hardware accessories in NA already!

The comments are hilarious......and unsurprisingly consist mostly of DS fans who hate Sony.

"The surge could be put down to"

no, the surge is because of Monster Hunter. It will be interesting to see the final hardware figures for Feb.

Yep....good software sells systems. This only glorifies that point.
Original MH sales were incredible too. I'm waiting for GOW:portable

They drop the PSP price to £89.99 with a 512mb card and nothing else, undercut the DS, they'll sell. It's a shame it costs twice as much really. But to go as far as revival? Just as Resident Evil 4 was a revival for the Gamecube?

Yeah, they've put out several good PSP titles lately it seems.
If they drop the price, I might pick one up. The new Metal Gear looks great.

I still love my PSP, but I NEVER play it at home. It's strickly for the tube, trains and planes. It's an awesome machine for the road. A good game will always boost sales.

Keyboard, Camera(better than 2MegaPixel), and a GPS would make me use my PSP 60% more than I already do
(which is a good amount anyways)

Does anyone else feel really embarrassed playing Locoroco? I'm in a train with suit, and there I am almost tempted to sing along :o

I don't use public transit so much, so I don't feel the pressure you do....I just sing along! :p

Hold on, why "revival", I thought the continuing message from the SDF was that the PSP isn't dead/dying/d00med?

Yes but many uninformed people(yes this ironically includes video game journalists) stand by the position that the PSP is failed/failing.
Its been said about the device since before its launch, but it is still here doing very well obviously....

Good to hear, PSP has been getting some good titles lately and more to come. The machine is not near DS figures but its still there for the long run and glad to see my money was not wasted.

Castlevania will be a treat.

Really? I got recall that being the over all tone....when the PSP was first showen, the DS wasn't out for the public, and I don't think many thought the GBA SP could take the PSP head to head

I agree. I distinctly remember all sorts of calls of, "The DS is just a gimmick," and, "The DS is so underpowered," and, "Nintendo only makes kiddy games, and once they lose the handheld market to the PSP, they'll be doomed. Why oh why don't they just stop making consoles and sell games on the other platforms?"

The scary part, is that Sony corporate was responsible for some of that FUD.

I wanted a PSP just for Super Ghost n' Goblins, but then I played it. :(

I guess it depends on where you were. Most of what I remember hearing is PSP will fail, Ninty has got the handheld market locked down tight. Oh look at Sony trying to create another Proprietary format. etc. etc.

This gens handheld market did better than anyone most could have speculated.
Thats good for everyone.

I wanted, and got, a PSP for Street Fighter Alpha 3. Then I saw the refresh rate.
And the fact that it wasn't even widescreen, just a stretched 4:3 image. I even think the GB version has a better aspect ratio since it was built from the ground up for the system.

I want a PSP-DS hybrid since to me they are both good handhelds but each one has stuff I would like to see in the other.

On the whole I would love to see the PSP continue to do decent or even do better than it is. More games and features would be gravy, as would a slimline PSP with built in 4GB memory and a different nub and a touch screen and..........

The fact that there is something other than Nintendo on the handheld market just makes its better for everyone, the PSP has a kickass share of games and its pretty popular (not nearly as much as the DS but still), Sony will definitely live on the handheld market and who knows, they might even take down on Nintendo, it might sound unlikely, but Microsoft taking on Sony with the Xbox sounded even more unlikely a few years back and look at the X360 now...

I totally agree. Competition is good, and means more innovation, better prices, and better games for all of us. :) I think it would be a shame if any of the competitors left the business.

I'm ready for miniWii and PSP2(with a microCELL processor)

Better prices?! On average PSP games are £10 more than DS games (already at £30) and the system price? Which doesn't get you a decent size memory card.

It's getting ridiculous now. Sony need to drop the price of the PSP and they should have done it yesterday.

Hrm. Good point. Well, the Wii has cheaper games, as does the DS. Maybe it will force the market prices for other systems' games down over time? Besides, free markets can't solve every problem.

I don't think the price difference is enough to FORCE anything....but thats just my opinion
Althogu hit woudl be nice to see cheaper games/accessories.

That be me odd $600 x 2, not counting accessories and software purchase. :)
320x480 touch screen. WooOoooOooooooo.

It's about 5 years old now and because of Sony's music crap, too many constraints were imposed upon the Clié in-turn crippling it from being all it could be. :(
