Apparently, it's not as bad as people thought! If they had told us that in the first place, people wouldn't have gotten the wrong impressions. I like reading forums and listen to people chant about things that aren't even true. For example, did Sony ever promise us that the PS3 would have 100% compatibility rate? No they didn't. And people automatically assume that if they say backwards compatibility, it should be 100%. Besides, Sony DID state several months ago that they would be doing PS2 games in emulation, not hardware based. The software just wasn't ready in time for it. Here's proof:

Does anyone remember reading that? I sure as hell did.

what does FUD stand for anyway?

Good to hear they (sony) has a good handle on emulation. Hopefully they can get most titles that aren't supported resolved in a timely manner, no sense in giving haters MORE reason to hate.

Haha well I was going to name it something else, but I think this title suits it better :D Not only that but it'll grab people's attention. They'll be like "HUUUUUH WHAAAA I THOUGHT THE PS3 SUCKED AT PS2 COMPATIBILITY". :p

Will these 1k titles have upscaling options or will that come at a later date?

It's funny. At this stage I'm still considering getting a PS3 over a 360. My cousin is selling Japan imports (stop that Sony) and he'd sell me one for how much it costs in Sterling, with shipping of course.

People are so bitter about their own lives they like to irrationally hate on companies.

Much like Mac drones irrationally hate and bash on Windows and Microsoft.

Besides you don't buy a friggin console to play the previous gen games... at first I was really excited about my PS2's backward compatibility option... now 6 years later I realized I've used it once or maybe twice...

All PS1 titles should have enhanced features, as P1 emulation is all software.
I think select PS2 titles will have enhanced features, but not all.....yet

What I see form this: they have some games emulating fine, and they will get enhancements, but others are having issues, so they leave in GS to increase number of supported titles.
Had they taken out EE and GS, the list probably would have been a few hundred instead of one thousand plus.

Dude, speak for yourself. I don't own a PS2, and have yet to play any PS2 games for any great length of time. If I get a PS3, I'll be getting it partially to play all sorts of good games I missed (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, maybe some FFs, etc.). I'm not going to buy a PS2 if I can avoid it.

Silly me. I suppose I'll have to stop buying PS2 games for my future PS3 then. Might as well bin my PS1 games whilst I'm at it.

what does FUD stand for anyway? Fear... Uncertainty... and... DOUBT...

1000 titles is nice, but how many is that compared to US/Japan?

I actually in my perspective agree with yer man for a change.
BC has never been a big selling point for me, I don't even take it into consideration when buying a new console.

Phil Harrison at E3:

"Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3."

"I don't believe that (the XBox 360) was backwards compatibility."

So no, I don’t believe they said they would do 100%, but they sure as hell didn’t say they wouldn't eh? He doesn’t believe the Xbox360 is backwards compatible. Oh, like the PS3 is Phil!
I am amazed how people are so quick to defend Sony on here. I own both a PS2 and a Wii, and fully intended to buy a PS3 after a few years. I am entirely neutral in the whole console war yet can't believe just how much Sony have screwed up this one, and the blame lays entirely on the companies sheer arrogance and over confidence that they have been talking up the PS3 without checking their facts first. Had Sony come out in the beginning and downplayed the PS3's backward compatibility then it wouldn't be a problem, but instead they chose to big it up and even mock Microsoft for not offering TRUE backwards compatibility, the likes only the Sony massive will truly experience. Now low and behold they are doing exactly the same thing as the XBox, and it's a hole they dug for themselves so all the fans that are quick to leap their defence, shovels in hand, are seriously kidding themselves.
I doubt it will be the end of Sony but I was once a staunch PS3 supporter and now I seriously doubt if it will be worth the investment.

It's not FUD and it never was. Sony is charging more in Europe for a console they say will emulate fewer games. THAT'S the reason we're annoyed.

Haha I'm not defending Sony :-P I'm merely pointing out facts, not feeding FUD. I like watching competition, and I haven't seen it this heated up in a long time! Not since the old Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo days, wouldn't ya say? Except nowadays, you've got super FUD-ers, because they're afraid that their precious console is "losing". Who cares?

The way I see it, every system has great games coming out for it. And what they really have going for it is the exclusive games. Yes, some people don't have the luxury of owning all the consoles in the market, but if people wait maybe a few years down the road when the consoles are cheap, they can buy a combination of those consoles for the price of buying ONE console when they launch! I'd say that would be logical, but that's just me, because by then, a lot of triple A titles will have come out for the console. Let the early adopters drive the cost down for the console, and then pass the savings onto the late customers. Isn't that how it always works?

Your paying more due to VAT taxes, and your only lose partial BC...its coming back soon.
Does it bother people that much that they will only be able to play a few thousand titles(all PS1 + 1000 PS2) instead of all Playstation titles.

Thats like whining because Ninty has yet to release online.
Sure its sucks now, but we all know its coming.....chill out.

The EU/UK PS3 is not permanently losing any feature-set that is in the NA/JPN versions.
this is no "downgrade"

Your paying more due to VAT taxes

So where does the extra $88/£45 after VAT go? Does it cost that much to remove a chip?

Coded-Dude
Mar 2, 2007, 01:38 PM
Like I've said before, its not the same price in almost any territory.....
US paid about $70 more than Japan, and you pay about $88 more than that.
I expect that has a lot to do with shipping/import issues, and probably some other factors as well.

I don't really care enough to speculate.

btw - I'm sure you know this, but just in case your question wasn't sarcastic;
they are SAVING money by removing the chip.

If you don't like the price wait until it goes down(or just don't buy it)....thats all i can say

I think the Europeans are forgetting prices there continue to go up every year the EU robs companies of their money. They're so embedded in socialist paradise they are convinced the EU is "standing up" to big business, while the European citizens pay these fines back as higher prices... or now in the form of insurance. The Wii in England costs about $330 US. If Europeans want to pay lower prices then they should do the following two things:

1) Encourage free market economics where customers decide what succeeds or fails, rather than government (and government fines.)

2) Create video game platforms and systems yourself. This will force foreign companies (Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony for example) to lower prices in order to compete with the pride one feels buying from their own people. Surely all the great innovators in Europe weren't lost during the Brain Drain.

Well, when Sony says that then everything must be ok. Sony ALWAYS wants the best (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Sony_BMG_CD_copy_protection_scandal) for the customer.

The good one, or the gimped one? Looks too cheap to be the good version, but some people might be into it. But I can't say I'm all that informed when it comes to the latest PS3 prices. I just find it fishy that they don't tell you the version straight out, especially since they're very specific about telling you what versions you can trade in.

Still, I don't like trading stuff in. I feel like it's a raw deal compared to selling it yourself. Plus, I don't like to get rid of my consoles. :)

We only get the 60gb version. Which IMO is good - one SKU please!

The prices there aren't good. Especially since you could sell your 2nd hand Wii for the same price as a store here. But it's widely known GAME suck. Worst trade in values, highest priced games etc.

Just an interesting note:

826/600 = 1.37 (PS3)
330/250 = 1.32 (Wii)

Pretty close as far as ratios go. I hope it's enough for EU insurance.
