View Full Version : Anyone getting Tiger Woods 07 for Wii?

I have really been looking forward to this game. Golf is probably my favorite to play on Wii Sports since I do play golf in real life. TW 07 looks like a lot of fun. Instead of 9 holes of golf on Wii Sports we will have 324. I think I read somewhere that there are 18 courses on TW 07. The thing I thought Wii Sports was really missing was some kind of tournament. Even with 9 holes a tournament would have been awesome. I've never owned a TW game on a console before, but I have had a few on PC but this one looks great. I plan on picking this up next Thursday.

I've never played a TW games before (short of a quick online game on the 360, what a strange way to play a golf game)... but I might get this. It will be the first EA game I've bought since Deluxe Paint if it's any good.

TW and NCAA football are about the only EA games that I play. You may think playing on a console is a weird way to play golf but when it costs $50 every time you go play at a course that console starts to look better.

I'm getting TW. I tried it on my DS, but didn't spend the time to appreciate it.

I'd rather have Arnold Palmer Golf for the Wii. :) Sorry, reminiscing about my Genesis.

I will most likely be picking this one up. I've read some things online that have said that it is just great as far as gameplay goes. My current favorite Wii Sport is golf, so I'm glad that a game with more depth is coming out. I passed on Super Swing Golf, but I don't think I'll be passing this one up.

Even with me, the only console golf game I've properly enjoyed was Wii Sports. I had a short addiction to the DS Touch Golf game before Wii Sports, now it's just not the same :(

I've always liked golf video games better than actually golfing. :o

Prior the Wii and few golf games here and there, the only other sports title I really liked, was Tournament Cyberball. :)

Madden has been out since launch. It's the first football game I've liked since Cyberball in the arcade. It's on my want list to buy, but I have a few other games I want to get to first. I also know two people that own it at the moment. :o

I'm not a big sports game fan, either. Heck, I'm not even a sports fan (except basketball on occasion), unless I'm actually playing. However, I became interested in the Wii Madden game when I read the reviews and heard about the controls. I may not purchase it, but I've decided to at least give it a rent.

Haha, it's crazy. Wii Sports Tennis is my favorite of the Wii Sports bunch, and that's what I spent most of my time playing after I got my Wii, so much so that I hadn't even tried the golf game. It was my friend who suggested playing golf, and that game was what made him decide he wanted a Wii.

After that, I thought, "Huh, I never knew he was a golfer. Learn something new every day." Then, when I asked him about it, I found out that he isn't into golfing. He was just liked the controls that much.

I'll be trading in my Tiger Woods Xbox 360 game to pick TW07 up for the Wii. This should be lots of fun (TW on the 360 was nice, but online play was really laggy so I haven't played it since the 2nd week after it was released (October I think).

So has anyone figured out the actual release date. Somebody said that Wikipedia says the 13th, I swear I saw a commercial on tv that said the 15th, and everything I find on store websites (walmart, bestbuy) says the 14th. I don't know when I should go to walmart to buy it.

Edit: I just checked the official TW07 site. They must have just edited it because it did not say this yesterday. It says the game will be released on the 15th.

If you're interested in Tiger Woods '07, then this IGN article is worth reading (http://wii.ign.com/articles/769/769978p1.html).

Granted they were playing a preview build of the game, so the finished product may be more refined, but they said that the swinging mechanics are better in Wii Sports than in TW '07.

I think I'll rent it before I buy, just to make sure I'm ready to drop 50 bucks on it.

I'm really excited about sports games now, the only other golf game I ever bought was Mario Golf for the 'Cube. ;)

Hopefully it does get better in the final build. Although I feel what they say about Wii sports is wrong. I find myself not paying attention to what the character on the screen is doing, but what I am doing (a good thing). However putting is horrible on Wii sports. I usually only flick the controller forward to complete a putt. Most people I know can't even putt right the first few rounds that we play. I guess I will just have to wait for a review rather than buy it straight away the day of release.

I'll have it later this week, so will play it enough to get a feel of the game before sharing my opinion, if others are interested? I'm not going to repeat my Super MonkeyBall mistake and pass a premature judgment before giving the game enough time. I did the same for Castlevania PoR and that game was freaking awesome.

If I keep on listening to others, than I'll never buy any games. :)

I had trouble putting at first, too, but then I tried swinging the club like I actually putt, i.e. a short motion with arms held stiff, and that helps me to putt very well.

I have read the IGN articles and the only complaint I saw was about the putting mechanics. I have not seen any updates on there but I think it was on 1up.com that they said EA had heard complaints about the putting from a lot of different groups and had fixed it. 1up said the putting was a lot better now. I'll try and find the article.

My local Best Buy ad said that they would have the game by 2 pm Wednesday. I think I'll try Walmart on Wednesday since it's only 10 miles away and BB is 30. It Walmart doesn't have it Wednesday I'll just wait until Thursday.

1up review:

http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3158006

7.5

"Tiger's mechanics make the game stand as the first worthy golf simulator. After you grip it and rip it here, you'll realize Wii Sports Golf and Super Swing are little more than tech demos. Still, Tiger's swing system isn't perfect. "

"In the end, the real courses, the pace of play, the new One Ball mode (a multiplayer mode where two players trade shots on the same ball, trying to sabotage each other so they can make the final winning putt), and the "grown-up" factor make this worth a play for any golf enthusiast. The control hiccups may cause problems, but most of them can be countered with care."

The graphics look very bad, with little or no antialiasing in the environments (I thought Nintendo clinched that department back with Mario 64), except in the sandtraps. Who cares what the golfers look like - they could have used Miis (similar to Hotshots golf) and instead improved the environments, if the console is really so short on graphical horsepower.

They did, they did. :)

EA could have done a better job, but as long as gameplay has been honed out and the game is fun, I'll be quite happy.

TW is just an update of the PS2/Xbox version, so the same basic engine with its limitation, but with "some" revamped textures to make as little use of the Wii as possible, but still make it look a bit better than the other versions.

Other games like Scarface at least overhauled all of the textures and shaders. They didn't touch the engine though, so it will just be another example of a highly polished PS2 game. It's going to take the developement of a real Wii engine for things to pickup visually and that won't happen if publishers don't see good returns on their investments. So only first party devs like Retro will be pushing the Wii's potential al this time. I hope Retro will license out its Wii engine, so that some of these sloppy devlopers will have one less thing to botch.

This honestly is not a concern for me. I could care less about the graphics, I just want the gameplay to be fun with the Wii-mote. I have the newest TW for the Xbox 360 and the graphics are great, but I never play it. But if the gameplay is not great and the graphics are bad, then we have a problem :)

This honestly is not a concern for me. I could care less about the graphics, I just want the gameplay to be fun with the Wii-mote..

If they gameplay is great, then I will be happy too, provided that jagged flickery textures don't create a strobe-like effect which tends to give me headaches. To be fair, I have that problem even when watching overly compressed hdtv tennis transmissions (the stair-steppy white court lines jump out at me too much) and that problem is partially ameliorated by watching the same program in standard def on a 13" sony trinitron boob tube.

In light of the above, when I write 'bad graphics', I tend to mean the type that makes me wish that the developer had simplified the graphics overall to the point of not being an eyesore (thinking of the Hippocratian ''at least do no harm...") so as to provide visuals more realistically within the capacity of the gpu/engine. IMO when a game pans (for the viewer) a segment of a golf course, certain areas (e.g. patch of rough, group of trees) should not flicker so much more than other areas that it looks like tectonic shifting is going on underneath. Keep in mind that the wii is only doing 480p to begin with (except in Rayman which is 480i), with Nintendo having rationalized the decision to avoid 720p on the basis of avoiding higher development costs, so IMO Nintendo's latest games should at least have ample resources for 3D filtering effects at the chosen rez. Anyway, the DS already provides developers the means of implementing AA without much of a performance hit (unlike PSP) so maybe they should emulate the DS on the wii and use the DS's lower resolutions (i.e. in a VC of sorts).

I promise not to run on so much next time!

Just got done playing my first round with my roommates, after about 8 practice holes. I finished 4 over as Annika with all default settings. The controls are definitely finnicky- any jerkiness on your backswing, and the console interprets that as a swing...and a terrible one at that.

My roommates, who golf once in awhile, didn't seem to like the follow-through mechanics of the game. I found success stopping my swing parallel with the ground, instead of following all the way through. Once they adapted, they were having similar success.

I haven't had the opportunity to fine-tune my strokes, relying instead on whatever club allowed me to swing between 100 and 110%. If I had to use a club at less than 100%, I was in trouble.

Putting is pretty easy to line up, but is hard to manage pace, particularly at longer distances. In addition, I don't think any of us had a putt go farther than 50 feet...perhaps we weren't doing something right.

I'll have to check it out more later. I'd love to hear what everyone else thought, and if anyone has any questions I can answer with my wealth of experience (: I'd be happy to.

Let's get the least important part of this review out of the way; to those who are obsessed with graphics.....no, this doesn't look as good on the Wii as it does on the 360. I have both and compared both. The 360 definitely has better graphics displayed in 1080i than this does in 480p. Captain Obvious has spoken so hopefully that puts an end to the discussion of the graphics, helps to avoid console-war-bash discussions, and allows this thread to be about the gameplay of the Wii-version of TW '07. :)

Definitely use the tutorial on this so you can learn how to swing. Like the previous poster mentioned, it is very easy for the wiimote to misintepret swinging through the ball when you actually haven't yet. My wife has played golf her entire life and I have for about 10 years, and it seemed to really pay off getting into a proper stance and trying my best to keep my wrists straight and my shoulders lined up. I 'almost' felt like I had to swing well in order to get a good swing from the game. We actually did everything we would normally do when swinging the club, sans the club (wiimote instead). Head down looking at the imaginary ball, fluid backswing, watching the wiimote go through the imaginary ball, etc. I'm not saying that it reflects real golf but I think it does a fairly good job for a video game, which is what it is.

In typical TW fashion, when first creating a character expect them to be terrible. The ball never goes it's projected distance and often does not go straight when it should. I imagine this will be resolved once my character stats are maxed or nearly there. In untypical fashion, the putting actually seems to be the easiest part to start off with. Normally putting is the most difficult part of a TW game for me to master, but I had zero 3 putts and most of my first putts put me within 2 feet of the cup (if and when I had 2 putts).

Creating a character is pretty straight forward. Nothing new to this other than using the wiimote instead of a controller. It's easy to accidentally miss what you're aiming at and hit 'A' to progress you to the next screen instead of what you were trying to select. That was a bit frustrating, but nothing to bothersome as that feature will rarely be used by the same person (I assume). One must be careful in the shop though, b/c trying on an item or buying an item are right next to each other.....so if you are pointing at trying it on it is pretty easy to miss and accidentally buy it.

For all my Wii games, I go all out with the wiimote. I get into it even though I know it's not totally necessary. TW '07 is no exception. I am playing the game like I want to believe it is real golf. While this makes it a lot more fun than using the controller to play the version I have on the 360, it also makes it a lot more physically demading. After 36 holes, I was done playing. Which is ironic, b/c I can never play more than 36 holes in a day in real golf.

I doubt this is a game where one can play all day long day after day, unless they are really dedicated. It seems more like an hour of playing every few days for a stretched out time frame kind-of-game. I believe I will be playing this game until the next one is released and will get my moneys worth. Overall, I'm glad I purchased it. It seems like it's going to be a lot of fun. Multiplayer will make it even better.....and since TW on the 360 had such terrible lag on online play, I don't feel as though the Wii version is missing something b/c it wasn't worth playing online on the 360 anyway.

I'll post back with more impressions as I get to put some more playing time into this game. I'll also keep a tab on how much my wife and I play this one versus the 360 version now that we have both (and she wouldn't let me trade in the other since she worked so hard on her character). :)

The graphics are definitely straight from the XBox/PS2. That guy Wes Culver said they updated some of the textures for the Wii version, so that things do look a bit better, but they clearly didn't do enough, which was a given before I bought this. The first thing I noticed was that the menus are not 480p at all, but still 480i. But on that note, Rayman's 480i menus looked way better, not to mention practically all DVDs. This is the one area they should have updated. It's actually kind of hard to read some things. I also noticed compression artifacts on the menus and the Skydome, which was supposedly one of the updated textures. Compared to other Wii games and even some Cube games, it's a really blocky texture, so if this an improvement over the Xbox and PS2 version, I can't imagine how poorly they looked.

Anyway, I've seen this sort of thing on both the 360 and PS3 for first ports. Fight Night, my favorite example, is still using PS2 menus. If TW07 does well, than TW08 will receive some real graphic updates. It's safe to say that they spent a majority of their time and budget on the controls and making it Wii happy.

I was also frustrated of how they designed the game face setup. I accidently hit the background more than once. They should have put in a real "back button," instead of maping the entire screen. That's just asinine. Once I got used to using this interface things went smoothly, but the team that designed this were clearly inexperienced. They really need to overhaul the whole menu from the ground up for the Wii's controls with good direction.

Ok, I'm done ranting. So far I realy like this game and was having fun practicing slicing and so on. I spent about an hour making a character, this was mainly because their interface designers are retards. I really like the depth this game offers over Wii Sports and visually it's more than good enough. I would say to anyone that likes WS Golf to buy TW07 without hesitation.

Too bad you can't take the characters stats from the 360 and apply them on the Wii version, or vice vers. :)

Jovian, it's good to hear that you like the game. I am also a golfer so I will be using my real swing. I have never used wrist flicks in Wii Sports either. It's so much more fun to do actual swings. I'll be picking my game up tonight and playing a couple rounds before I get to bed. I'm so excited.

Yeah, but please keep in mind that I'm a terrible golfer :)

How responsive is it in reading the wii mote motions?

Boxing in Wii Sports is horrible in the responsiveness department, it makes it basically unplayable.

Thanks for the reviews, guys. I might just go pick this up today if I get a chance.

I had problems with the responsiveness when I first played it because I was just flailing about. ;) After I calmed down my motions and started acting more like a real boxer I found the responsiveness to be excellent. I sometimes play Wii Boxing for a couple hours just to get a good workout. :)

It can definitely be oversensitive, which is why I stressed using the tutorial earlier. I spent a good hour on the tutorial just learning how to hit the ball from the tee. You have to learn how to not have those unnecessary motions while playing this. Take your time and find the best way to keep your wrists and arms straight while you swing. Once you find a comfortable way to do this you can eliminate the misreads by the wiimote. At first it was tough, especially for my wife...she wasn't even swinging back through the ball with the wiimote and it was swinging on screen....but after 30 minutes or so we found a comfort zone for this and it started getting better.

In contrast to the other TW's games, I spent more time setting up my body and wrists for each turn than I did choosing which club and where to hit the ball. This version is going to take awhile to get used to, so don't expect to pick up where you left off on the Xbox, PS2, GC editions.

I'll put in another 36 holes tonight and give some more feedback :)

Same here, it jsut took some practice to get my throws right. I avoid the workout part because it makes me tired, but probably shouldn't. :o

Alright, I got Tiger Woods 07 last night and I love it. I had no problems with the controls. I used a normal golf swing and it worked perfectly. I did slice the ball a few times but I do in real life too. I shot a +2 74 my first round of 18. For any golf fans out there, I would definitely recommend this game.
