View Full Version : Looking for a VGA box - Feeler

Looking for a VGA box, that takes Composite/S-Video and possibly Component and spits out a nice VGA signal.

Post your recommendations or offers here.

I'd love to see pictures of like a PS2 or Xbox being displayed on the monitor.

I use and recommend the ViewSonic N4. It's made really well. I use it to watch cable (it has a built in tuner) on my LCD. My 17" LCD is 1280x1024 and the N4 only outputs to 1024x768, but it's perfectly fine, even for DVDs. If you get the N5 or N6, I believe they output to higher resolutions.

The N6 outputs at 1280 x 1024.

Be forewarned there is about a 20 ns lag, according to the Guitar Hero II lag test. You won't notice it, so don't think it's that relevant.

I have my PS2 hooked up via S-Video and my GameCube via component. I highly recommend not using composite with the PS2. It will look ridiculously blurry. The GameCube looks fine in composite, but if you got component, go for it. Same could probably be said for the X-Box.

The N6 is about $100-$150 on eBay. It seems to be in decent demand because I have lost a few auctions. I got lucky on a Buy-It-Now for $125 shipped.

Yeah, I have my Gamecube hooked up with Composite. I haven't played it for a few months, but I never noticed any lag at all. I was lucky enough to find my N4 on here for $35 shipped, but they seem to go on eBay for $50+.

If you have an xbox or an xbox 360, they make a vga video cord, like I have on my 360 (to play on my 19" widescreen.. hehe). It cost me about 40 bucks, but it was WELL worth it. Basically HD quality for a fraction of the cost. Also, I think it would be better to get a vga cord rather than a vga box, because it's a native vga signal rather than a composite signal converted to vga. That wouldn't be as clear as the above.

I have a Philips E-Box, which takes component as well. Let me know if you are interested and I will pull details out.

I ordered it along with a display. I got the box but the display never arrived. So you know how much I have used it!

Holy crap! Look at all of the inputs! How's the latency on that thing for video games?

Just curious, what application is it for?

Doing a quick search, apparently it was for a Philips plasma TV to be used as a receiver. It used to retail at $1000!! Now on eBay for under $100...

How much are you looking for. Any trades?

Will this do 800x600? My monitor that it will be hooked to is only an 800x600 CRT 27" display.

I had no idea they dropped that low. I paid $275 not too long ago, and that is because I was "buying" the display too, for about $2000.

I will check on the resolution specs tonight and write back. It also has a remote and some cables.

No idea on price, but if ebay is $100 as another poster said, it is a killer deal there. I will give this some thought.

I also have one of those Viewsonic boxes and a 15" Viewsonic flat panel. I will post that information as well, for comparison.

Not to intrude again, but I recommend you sell him the Viewsonic box. I was doing some further research on the E Box (all of the inputs it has was tantalizing...), but there appears to be a lot of work involved in getting this thing to work. Assuming you give it to him with the remote (it appears some of those eBay auctions are missing parts), he has to go into the service menu to allow him to use it with a computer screen. Even then, there's no telling what resolution it outputs in. A few posts on some forums I found through Google suggest it probably does 480p and 1080i because that was the resolutions the plasma TV this was designed for supported. It just wasn't intended for a computer screen and appears to be a chore to get up and running. If you could post some more specs, that would be appreciated. I am looking into it myself, but it doesn't appear to be worth it at the moment.

I have a Viewsonic N6 myself for my gaming needs, so I would recommend you sell that. It works as intended. And I know the latency is low enough for most games since I use it myself :)

I agree, since the e-box was manufactured keeping in mind the 42" display. Its only edge for OP will be the component inputs. I will check what model Viewsonic I have and post info.

Not sure if this is way more that what OP is looking for. But here are the pics of a Viewsonic N5 box connected to a Viewsonic VE500 display (flat panel).

I'm not too worried about component, and my CRT can do 480P.
