my roommate asked me a question regarding this. His boss has 2 macs: a CRT imac, and a powerbook G3 laptop, both running OS 9, with a total drive space of 60GB. His boss just recently picked up a few (3, i think) 120GB firewire hard drives, so he can back up the data on the machines. When he transfered the data however, he filled up 2 of the drives! how does 60gb stretch to 240GB?! what should he do? thanks in advance.

the only thing that comes to mind is that the FW drives were formatted differently, i.e. with a larger block sized scheme. If his was HFS+ and the drives were DOS, the block size difference might account for this.

Try reformatting the FW drives in HFS+ and then copy.

Or maybe the filesystems are corrupted.
Info on file size can go horribly wrong....
Have you searched for files >1 GB? Sometimes you'll find some wierd answers....
