Surprise surprise! Background downloading! WOO! The PS3 is getting better and better throughout each update. You know, I like seeing software updates. Makes it feel like there's always something new about the system everytime I update. :D

Yeah me too. It's one step on the right way up, but there's still a considerably large amount of steps to climb.

Game invites, messaging, achievements etc....

I figure the 'achievements' are gonna come with HOME, isn't that what Sony had said? With those star wars like things in your room?

I still can't believe that people need to have those  The video game equivalent of a big dick contest.

I think with HOME - its only your TOP achievement that is seen and not your whole achievements like the 360.

That's what the guy demo-ing it on 'gamespot live' said anyway.

My 360 achievement score is fairly average, I'm only at just over 6k after what 14-15 months!, when I know people who are at over 30k  I'll probably only just get to that kind of score when the machines lifecycle is done....

They aren't a huge thing for me, but I know for others they are a major +

You wouldn't be a man if you didn't know that yours is the biggest in the world.

and for the record...ummm you don't need me to say it:D

More 1.60 Update Details
Sony releases new, expanded information on the latest firmware update.
by Chris Roper
US, March 20, 2007 - Yesterday we brought you news from Japan of what functionality the upcoming 1.60 firmware update would add to the PlayStation 3, but today's US press release shed light on a few more details. In addition to Remote Play support for 20GB models, an on-screen QWERTY keyboard and a zoom function for the web browser, the ability to run Folding@Home and basic background downloading, there will be a handful of other features included.

A disc auto-start option will allow users to choose whether they want their PS3 to automatically play a disc when it's inserted or the machine is turned on. Support for rewriteable Blu-ray discs has been added, as well as the ability to use Bluetooth keyboards and mice.

Most of all though, the US press release shed more details on the all-important background downloading feature for the PlayStation Store. Users will be able to queue up to six downloads at one time, which coincidentally matches the Xbox 360's maximum queue. Progress of these downloads can be followed under a new Download Management section that will reside under the Cross Media Bar's Network icon. While you won't be able to play a game while downloads work in the background, you will be able to watch video, view images, listen to music and browse the web at the same time.

The update is set for release on this coming Thursday, March 22nd.

That's a bit of a let down.

Well if you purchase Casino Royale by Sony Pictures available March 13th on DVD and Blu-Ray, starring Daniel Craig and Eva Green which has been given "Two Thumbs up" - (Ebert & Roper) and has been called "A non-stop thrill ride....you will nearly crap your pants" - (some guy from nerdyfatassblog.net) You will see that Daniel Craig doesn't need to promote Casino Royale, because in it's infinite-awesome-amazing-spectactular-ness, it sells itself.

UPDATE: We've received word from Sony that you will indeed be able to play games while downloading content in the background. Similar to how downloads on the Xbox 360 works, you'll be able to play games offline while downloads work in the background, and if you hop online your queue will simply pause until you disconnect.

The update is set for release on this coming Thursday, March 22nd.

Yeah, I want my update NOW! GRR! Does that mean that the update will appear at 12:01 AM tonight...? Haha j/k it'll never happen. They always do these updates during the daytime...Grr. At least this update is actually worth updating to. Ability to turn off auto-load, download at least 6 things in the background while doing something else, etc. WOOHOO can't wait! :D Now we have to wait until Home...

ITS ON!!!!!! Mine's downloading now. :)

OK so now I have 1.6 but.... I thought with this update they were going to allow you to change the color / or select a photo for the desktop.. ? :(

Auto Disc is on the system setup, and browser has a nice new zoom features and works better.

Folding at home is NOT included with the update. You can select it - and then it downloads the application seperatly. 50mb

AHH I wanna see the new features on this update! I downloaded it this morning before I went to work...All I got to test was the browser. Seems a little faster, but the best part is the new onscreen keyboard. Oh well, I'm not going to be doing a lot of web surfing on the system anyway. Oh, and the auto-disc load is awesome. No more auto-loading at system bootup! :D

just to put the stats on the second page for everyone...

We all know the Cell is a great processor for floating point calculations.

But that doesnt mean its mega great for all gaming tasks, only certain aspects - so the cell advantage only boils down to 'certain' instances.

But that figure is still v.impressive

edit... and one of those PS3's is mine. It's been running for a couple of hours now :)

Anyone notice how the TFLOP performance from PS3 is only for the last 2 days? The Windows CPUs are the last 50, and the GPU are the last 10.

I read that the update allows for Bluetooth Keyboards and Mouses. If that applys to apple keyboard I do not know since I don't have one.

It's not that important to me tbh, I have a nice black Logitech Dinovo keyboard I'm using at the moment and it looks much nicer with the ps3 than the contrasting white of the apple BT keyboard.

However I was just trying it to see now they officially supported BT keyboards.

What happens for me is it searchs for the keyboard, at which point it signs itself out of the wireless network ? It finds the keyboard and I choose select to connect, a few minutes later my ps3 signs itself back into the network and a few seconds later an error message about connecting to the keyboard comes on screen...

I really like the feature that keeps the games/movies from auto loading. It got pretty annoying every time I started up the system and I didn't want to use what was already in the drive.

However, I was saddened to see that the update did not include the much anticipated DVD "up-scaler". Perhaps this will be in future additions of the Fimware?
