Today I got my replacement Wii (the old one wouldn't go online), and noticed after setting up stuff and then turning it off, I came back to the Wii after about half an hour it was warm. Is it cause of the WiiConnect24 (which I didn't have on my old one)?

Yep. WiiConnect24 makes the Wii run a little warm when idle.

I would hope so!! ;)

There have been reports of GPU's burning up from the heat while on standby. I had to move the wii as it was in the direct downwind of the PS3, which didnt help any. It's warm to the touch even when on standby.

Mine was warm with Wii connect 24. But now I dont leave it on standby I turn it off anyway.

WiiConnect 24 is an utter waste really. It's not like it downloads the updates for you.

Same here, but I don't think I have WiiConnect24 on.

Yea I don't see the point, it's not like there's super important info comin in. I think I'll turn it off too.

With WC24 it's as warm as the Sky receiver sat next to it.

Need WC24 for the voting channel after all! And the Mii channel.

Anyone know how much power the Wii draws when on standby with WC24 on. I'm wondering if it's really worth it.

Not much at all, with my receiver, sub (w 650 amp), ps3, wii, and tv on standby and my HD Cable DVR on 24/7 i draw only 0.6A

TV on, Receiver on, sub/amp on, DVR on, all else on standby around 2.5-2.8A

While Playing the Wii, 3.2-3.8A

While Playing PS3/Watching BD, 4.0-4.8A

Thats total system Amp load.

How are you measuring current? This probably won't help because things like the amplifier and power supplies in the ps3/wii will add quite the phase shift on the line, and your ammeter probably can't compensate.

Power consumption in today's consoles.

Idle/Standby - Page 4 (http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-4.htm)

Page 2-3 shows consumption during gameplay and DVD playback.

Page 1 explains the testing method they used.

I got to admit, I'm a little disapointed by Connect24. I was led to expect that a lot more fun content would be automatically downloaded in standby mode. Oh well, life goes on.

This YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdWnsw3Yckc) is exactly what happened to my Wii. Now I have to send my Wii in to be serviced. Three weeks without my Wii, how will I pass the time?!

For the record, the innuendos were intentional.

While I agree that I would like more content and use for WiiConnect24, we all have to keep in mind that the Wii is still in very early stages of its life. Look how long it took Xbox Live to become really useful and full featured. You can't expect Nintendo to roll out a fully featured online interface within the first few months of its life.

Give them a change, things will get better.

Agreed. Just had a bad feeling about it.

Source? I read all the game blogs all the time, and haven't seen anything of this nature (somebody at Nintendo farts & they cover it, so I'd expect them to do so with "OMG Wii melted!!!" stories)

Everybody may know this, but to clarify (at least for the OP): there are 2 settings involved here - WiiConnect 24 and Standby Mode. You have to have both turned on to get the standby/orange light/console heats up like a MacBook Pro, er, an iron. You can turn on WiiConnect 24 but not Standby Mode, and the console will turn off when off. This is probably recommended, as you need to have WiiConnect 24 enabled to access nearly all of the online channels. The only exception is the Forecast Channel, which needs both settings turned on for some reason - hence why I hardly ever use it.

On a similar note, does anyone know how long it takes for a message/email to arrive when sending from a Wii? And if it's a fixed time? Wii to Wii seems varied between 30 seconds to a few minutes, email takes up to 15 minutes. Just wondering if it's my connection is all.

Wii to email is no more than a minute for me, Wii to Wii i can't say, but ive had responses back to me within a matter of minutes so i will assume its just as speedy as email.

Saying "that youtube video" doesn't mean anything to me. Give us a link.

Saying "Google helps too" doesn't help either. If you're going to post "Wiis are melting!" claims, how about...I dunno...linking to some? Burden of proof is on you to back up what you say.

I'm not arguing that the Wii on standby doesn't get waaay too hot. I am saying that I haven't seen any credible reporting of this - and by "credible," I mean "rumors relayed by game blogs without confirmation," so my standard is pretty loose.

EDIT: Before you come back saying "click on the Google link," I did, although we shouldn't have to (i.e., you should give more specifics). One story shows some minor graphical issues in an N64 VC game and seems inconclusive. A second is a piss-poor blog posting alleging with no source that "gamers" are now "reporting problems," and that these same "gamers" are spending lots of money to replace their Wiis with (nonexistent) new retail consoles. Clear FUD.

The youtube video is IN THIS THREAD, there is exactly what you are looking for in that google link that i provided, need someone to come to your house and input it for you?

Sounds like you have a laziness issue.

Sorry, didn't see that YouTube link.:o Also didn't get to post my preemptive edit - up now - saying that, yes, I did go to that Google link (even though you should be linking to specific posts), and no, there's nothing at all conclusive there - far from it.

Given your history of making unsubstantiated claims with no proof (Nintendo and the UN are conspiring to make artificial Wii shortages!!), it's perfectly reasonable to ask that you pick out some reputable articles & link to them - not send a Google link and expect us to read whatever crap it dredges up. If I was going to descend to a personal level, I'd say you're the one with the laziness issue - but I'm not, so I won't. :)
