View Full Version : Feeler: iBook G4 800 MHz

I have an 800 MHz G4 iBook (12-inch screen) that I'm considering whether to sell. The hard drive is brand-spanking new this week -- 100 gb, 5400 rpm -- and the computer will ship with the Tiger 10.4.6 DVD and the original install/restore discs. The battery is only a few months old and was just recently replaced by Apple as part of the recall. The iBook has 640 mb of ram.
Also has factory-installed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi cards. RAM also installed by Apple.

I'd think it's an ibook because it mentions the battery... good eye tho!

Right you are. Sorry. It is an iBook. :(
I think I confuse them because I plan to buy an iMac next. :)

Sorry, no. The new hard drive, the new battery and the new OS 10.4 alone make it worth more than $350.

Definitely. You might want to just put it on eBay and then announce it here. I sold a similar laptop (iBook G4 1GHz, 768MB RAM, 60GB hard drive but with a new NuTech battery) a few months ago and got over $500 for it.

I'm sorry that you paid that much for a 100GB HDD when the same size drive, 5200 RPM, like what you got installed costs less than $73. So.. really you were charged $152 to do something that would take an hour at the most.
If you decide you would like to take my offer later, let me know.

You'll have to share your source for a drive then. I couldn't find a quality drive for that kind of price. And, as for the challenge of replacing a hard drive, I've done it before--twice. Once on an Apple desktop and once on an Apple laptop
Frankly, though, I have better things to do with my time than this (http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddibookg4uk.htm).

That's fine. I am not trying to argue with you or flame you or troll your thread. I'm just saying, don't expect to recoup that much of your investment.

I'm interested in your iBook. What are you looking to get for it because rolling your eyes at multiple offers isn't helpful.

Thanks! I thought so, too.
For people who live in Chicago and can arrange a "cash deal," I will include a very nice "incase" case and a Bluetooth mouse.
Contrary to what some prior posts might indicate, I assign value to the peace of mind that a buyer gets to the fact that this computer has 1) a BRAND-NEW hard drive and 2) a NEW battery and 3) a clean bill of health from an independent service company.

Does it come with the original disc for Tiger?
If it doesnt then you cant sell the machine with it preinstalled, as its illegal, and also aganist MR marketplace rules.

Are you asking a question or lecturing?
Of course it comes with the original disc for Tiger. It has the 10.4.6 installation DVD as well as the original install/restore discs that shipped with the computer.

$500 is a bit extreme, IMO.
It's an 12" 800MHz G4, with a little more than a half gig of RAM, and a Combo drive.
It's a nice little machine, sure, but let's face it. It's slow. It's tiny. Dim backlight. Low-res. You can't burn DVD's with it. It could use more RAM by today's standards.
One would be much better off finding a used MacBook Core Duo for a couple hundred dollars more.
I would give you $300-350 for this machine, and if I were you, I would jump on the $400 offer you received earlier in this thread.
Just my two cents. After all, this is a Feeler thread.

The $500 asking price includes shipping and escrow fees. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I appreciate all the opinions I've received so far.
As I've said previously, I think there's value in buying a machine with a new hard drive and a new battery and a clean bill of health. If the market thinks I'm wrong, then so be it. I don't have to sell this iBook, so I don't need to jump on an offer unless it appeals to me.

Sold: I found a buyer for my iBook on Craigslist.com. A cash deal for $550. I included the Bluetooth mouse, incase carrying bag and the iSight camera. Thanks to all of you for your input. Had some of you not been so "helpful," I might not have gotten this good of a deal -- nor would the buyer have gotten this good of a deal. Both sides win, and that's the best kind of transaction! :D

People pay $300-350 for a busted iBook like this for parts alone. Quit low-balling this person. This computer is worth that $500+ price. 100GB laptop drives aren't cheap, and it comes with the Tiger discs. I can't believe some of the people here...

Considering the sale was done two weeks ago, its kind of a moot point, although the iSight... dang I would have snatched that up for $50, if the laptop was being sold for $500... since those things are worth about $150-$200 alone now!! Dang, why didn't I see that sooner!
All-in-all, cash value of the laptop with the stuff: $375. Pretty good deal for that guy, since Seperately $600+ would not have been unreasonable for here.
