ffmpegX (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15473) is highly recommended - it's a frontend to free UNIX programs, but if you like a nice GUI like I prefer, it's a great program.

Open the .avi in QuickTime, go to File->Export and choose "Movie to Toast Video CD".

If you can't get the AVI to work in Quicktime, make sure you have the latest DivX codec (http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/) installed, assuming it's one of those DivX in disguise as AVI movies.

ok the avi file is 691 MB but quicktime says its too big for a roxio movie, can i turn it into a DVD with dvd studio pro. if i can what bitrate is best with an avi file thats 102 mins long and 691MB in size? im thinking around 5MB/sec.
