MacRumors
Jun 17, 2003, 05:55 PM
A News.com (http://news.com.com/2110-1046_3-1018165.html?tag=mac.nn) article reports that Safari 1.0 is coming:
Apple Computer said Tuesday that a final 1.0 version of its Safari Web browser is coming soon.
Further attention has been shifted towards Safari after Microsoft has stated that it is not going to be continuing development of Internet Explorer.

This is a nice break from 24/7 Power Mac 970 talk. Hopefully Safari 1.0 comes at WWDC. :)

Yea yea the witch is dead, the witch is dead, the witch is dead.
Long live safari! hope 1.0 doesn't crash as often as v74... and the tabs work better...

I don't think it's ready. I love Safari's speed and its my number one choice for a browser but they need to work with some sites and get plugins working correctly.. Launch.com in particular...

What is happening to the Macrumors site, it seems to be in almost low bandwidth mode or something. Is WWDC here already?
Anyway I hope the new version of Safari will work with the IE only sites so I can finally get rid of IE. The present version of Safari also seems to be very slow loading the first web page on my PB G4, I hope they sort that too.

Yeah, MacMinute reported this, too.
It better be soon, though. I'm using Chimera because v80 sorta crashed. I'd love to get back on Safari, again.

Yeah, Pyrotoaster, seeing as you shouldn't even have v80. :p

Yeah, well I only installed it knowing the risks involved. Besides, I don't blame Apple (at least not publicly ;) ).

MacRumors is slow right now because of the supposed picture of the new PowerMac. . . anyway, Yeah, I think we were all expecting 1.0 at WWDC, Safari sure has come a long way since back when a lot of us thought it was going to be Mozilla-based. . .

See this (http://www.funmac.com/showthread.php?threadid=1892) for information on v80 -- and why it screws everything up.

Yeah that's been a laugh, Safari v80 has been crashing about once every 30 mins for me. Yeah lol. Oh hang on, its infuriating isn't it
I think everyone expected this, Safari GM comes with Panther, Apple preview Panther next week. I just can't wait to see if GM can be installed on Jaguar and fix the v80 problem, or if Apple are leaving it as a lesson to us bad people!

edit: pyrotoaster, forgot to say congratulations on the new 6502 status! I realise you've had it for a while now, but better late than never!

I still keep IE around because Safari still doesn't work for some sites. I really hope the final version fixes this, and Safari can be my only browser. The other day, when I had to use IE, I couldn't believe how slow and infuriating it was!

Do you think Apple will still bundle IE with Panther?

Safari regularly crashes for me on 2 sites:
1. crazyapplerumors.com - not everyday, but at least a couple of times week. if it does crash, it will crash everytime i go on that same day.
2. www.apple.com - this one kills me. again, once it crashes 1 time, it will crash everytime for the rest of the day or until I reboot.

Seeing as how Microsoft says it will no longer develop IE and the Microsoft-Apple partnership is over: NO!

I have v80, it is pretty good, I never get any sites to crash, tho sometimes when you open like 2 pages w/6 tabs each it crashes, tho might be the site, but dunno.
A final version should be good too.

Just a note to you: Do Not try to remove v80! That's where I ran into some real problems. Now I can't use the previous public release, and it appears I need a new v80 installer to get v80 back. *headache*
I'm assuming 1.0's installer will fix me up, but until then, I'm stuck using Chimera and Explorer to get around the net.

Yeah, I hear you AppleMatt: Safari crashes A LOT.
But it's a beta, so I guess to complain would be to miss the point.

Hey all. I used to have a Titanium PB and used Safari on it. When it had a lot of information to load or websites took a long time I would hear a squeaking noise from coming underneath the keyboard.
I now have a 17" and sometimes hear the same noise. This is really annoying so I don't use it. I'm using Mozilla and am quite happy with it as it remembers information so I don't have to enter it over and over...but does anyone have any idea as to why this is helping.
So if anyone has this same experience or any advice I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

Cool, I wonder if it will run, or just crash when I try to run it like 0.74 does now.
Anyone else having this problem? Any advice?

WOW I've only had safari quit on me once in all the time I've been using it (knock on wood). It still does not work on a few sites mostly the sites fault but oh well.

As my sig now notes, I've got Safari v80 back up and running, despite it's refusal to reinstall after I dumped it.
The trick was in poking around the installer, and it's package contents. In order to keep the installer from telling you your computer can't install v80, you simply remove "VolumeCheck" from the contents.
While v80 has its bugs, it's a heluva lot better than Explorer and Chimera (no offense Chimera, I just like Safari better).
*Note: I don't recommed anyone doing what I've done to the installer should they have it for some reason. I'm just a nutjob risk taker. ;)

I remember an old Spymac rumor that claimed Apple was going to box iChat, Safari, and Mail into an iLife thingy. But there wasn't a shred of evidence, and who's really going to pay for any of those (I like Safari and Mail, but I'd just keep using free versions).

So, for those of you "beta testing" build v80, has the Download Manager been improved any? Can we pause/restart downloads yet?

Can we pause/restart downloads yet? there is an "x" button on each download. if you press it, the download marks itself cancelled, but you can restart it via a button there. i don't know if it resumes from the middle of the DL where you left off or starts from block one.

Regrettably doesn't Microsoft own stock in Apple? Short of selling the stock I think the relationship is still very much alive.

Not anymore. Non-voting stock, as I recall. Sold for a nice tidy profit.
5-year agreement is UP! No default installs unless Steve is feeling generous. Which is never.

I also have a PB G4 and have the same problem. The problems is caused when a site uses plugin like flash. Safari only loads plugins when they are needed, unlike other browsers that load the plugins at startup. It takes a very long time for Safari to load the plugin and then load the website. However once the plugin has been loaded Safari is a lot quicker. The advantage of this method is Safari can be quicker to load than other browsers like IE or Firebird.

Don't know much about Safari at all. Simply used it at the nearby Apple Store from time to time. However, my wish list is:
They have tabs.
Safari has a built-in auction watch app better than what IE currently provides. (Waitaminute, doesn't the new sherlock do this?)

Safari still doesn't work with some secure sites for me, ie my bank and school. Hope v1.0 fixes this. I can't wait to get rid of IE permanently.

Safari already has tabs (they're even better in v80, as long as you don't mind the occassional unexpected quit), and they're great (Chimera's tabs seem so old to me now...).
And while Sherlock does have eBay auction watching, it isn't great.

Auction watching capabilities is not something that should be built into a browser. A browser should be lightweight, do its job of displaying websites, and nothing else.
Its when you start adding features like auction watching that you end up with bloated, slow browsers.
If you need to automatically watch autions, get some stand-alone program to do it.
Just my 2 cents,
Josh
