Hey Guys. In about a month I'll be looking to sell my iPod Nano due to it's much awaited replacement, the iPhone. I'm wondering what a fair market value would be..
Black 1g Nano
2Gb
Usual surface scratches, nothin' major or even too noticeable
USB cable - Original
Box/CDs/Papers - Original
Soft carrying case - Original
Here is the kicker, it says "Kevin Schaefer" on the back. (Apple engraved) I'm not sure if it could be removed or what, but in any case the iPod could just be used for parts if the buyer didn't want the name on the back. (Which is most likely the case)
Anyway, try to give me just a fair estimate on what you feel is fair.
Thanks!
Edit: Looks like a new back can be had for apx. $20.

Unfortanetly it looks like new ipod models are just around the corner (at least according to the buyers guide section), so when you are ready to sell the ipod may not be worth much :(
Best of luck buddy, if you can live without your ipod for a month you may be better off selling it now.

it's old, it's engraved, and it's only 2GB. if i recall correctly, these originally sold for $149. i wouldn't pay more than $20 for it. you might be able to get $30-40 from someone interested in parts.

I'd snatch it right now for $25..

good for you. like i said, i wouldn't pay more than $20. and to further refine my statement, i don't think a level-headed buyer would pay more than $40.

I think your best bet would be to purchase the backing off eBay yourself and install it. The increase in value would supercede the price of the backing. 2nd gens 2g are going for about for $100-120ish tops. I'd say that, assuming you clean it up, you may be able to get around $80 for a 1st gen 2gb.

I am willing to offer $35 shipped, provided that the battery is decent...
Because I'm planning on using a case anyway.

Is this not because of the iPhone? New iPods may or may not be coming soon.

I'd give you $40 for it...I don't give a sh** that it's engraved...I don't stare at the back of my iPod when I'm listening to it like pianoman apparently does. Plus, if it plays music, that's all I'd need it for. And when exactly ARE new iPods coming out DavidCL23 because I haven't heard SQUAT!!!???

i don't stare at the back of my iPod while i'm listening to music. regardless of that, it's interesting that you're attacking my remarks about the engraving but you're still not willing to pay more than what i said might be the upper limit. i don't think it's worth more than that. if you think otherwise, go ahead and buy it.
as for the updates, it's acceptable to think that iPod updates are coming soon given the scheduled release date of the iPhone and that the past two years Apple has released new iPods around September. obviously nobody knows for sure but it's not agregious to think an update is coming soon.

Wowie, I was just giving some friendly advice (to someone who solicited it!), and you sound upset because of it (and I wasn't even giving the advice to you!).
This is all I know (as I quote from the macrumors product guide that I refferenced to before) "Product iPod mini/nano
Recommendation: Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle
Last Release September 12, 2006
Days Since Update 234 (Avg = 245) "

A $20 price guess/offer for a perfectly functioning iPod of ANY type is insulting, if not childish, whether it's engraved, old, or otherwise. I'd pay more if I really had a strong desire for it. This would be my 5th iPod in my possession, and would be used for one sole purpose...so I throw a number out there and if it's worth it to the seller, we'd have a deal. How does engraving of an iPod who's purpose is to play music, affect the function of said device thus reducing it's value???

Yeah, because I'm sure Apple goes by MacRumors' Buyers guide...smart.

Thank you everyone for your help and interest. I'm going to have to hold onto it for a few weeks longer, to take me a bit closer to the iPhone intro. At that time, I will bump this thread up changing it to a FS. Oh and as far as a price, I feel $40 is more than fair although I agree with MovieCutter and feel $20 for an iPod of any type is just wrong. Anyway, MovieCutter you will be the first to know when it becomes available if you are still interested! (By all means go ahead any buy another, just letting you know that I will be interested in a few weeks in selling)
Thanks Again

I sold a non engraved 1st gen 2gb black nano on anandtech forums for 75 not too long ago.
I'm sure you can get $50 for it from someone, you may have to look further than any mac forum though.

Wowie again, you must really be an angry person, I was just offering the guy some adive (which he requested!) and I even backed my logical conclusion by providing my source (which is fine if you don't agree with my source, the macrumors buyers guide, but their are better ways to state that than insulting me). Btw, OP if you eBay that ipod and include detailed pics you can probably get $80, and that's after eBay fees/shipping/paypal <-- yeah I know its a bit of a pain, but it is 100% more $ in your pocket :)

I'd give you $40 shipped.
Dude, I sold a Black and White iPod 3rd gen with a back so scratched up you wouldn't even be able to see an inscription (there wasn't one, but thats beside the point) for almost $100 less then a month ago. Yeah, it was 20GB but still.
I will give you $40 right now if you want.

I am also willing to up my earlier offer to $40.
I was just making an offer based on the previously estimated prices, and apologize if the offer of $35 did not seem serious.
