View Full Version : Feeler: G4 Quicksilver w/RAID Setup

I have a G4 Quicksilver (733 MHz, single processor) that is set up as my backup server. It has the stock 40G hard drive with OS X 10.4.9 installed, along with a hardware RAID card (ACARD) and two WD 400G hard drives configured as RAID 1 (mirrored.) It can be reconfigured for RAID 0 as well and can handle a total of 4 drives.
I just built this setup a month ago with the two brand new drives and the RAID card. Just my luck - my employer wanted to get rid of a 1 TB NAS that they were replacing, and made me an offer I couldn't refuse on it.
As a result, the G4 is redundant, and while I'm all for redundancy, I don't see a lot of value in having it taking up space and not doing anything.
I have no idea as to the value for this arrangement - hence my feeler request.
Thanks,
MD

Is there room in the case for 2 more drives (5 total? 1 system and 4 RAID)?

I'm seeing these machines going for around $200-$300 on eBay, without the RAID setup. You may want to consider selling that stuff separate, as it would probably fetch you more money that way.

I believe the computer he has does have 2 intermal HD bays, so it should have room for one more system and 2 more raid drives. (A total of 6 hard drives)

IIRC the quicksilver has the same drive configuration as the DA revisions. Which means 4 drives total.
Unless you use the optical bay, or rig up some custom mounting solution.
If you decide to part it out ... which model RAID card is it?
I've been having trouble with my non-RAID ACARD, and am looking at upgrading ... SATA would be killer.

I'd possibly be interested in just the unit without the RAID if you were willing to do a trade for a 1 GHz Pentium III-based laptop.
How much RAM is inside, what kind of optical drive, and what kind of video card?

If you want top split it i would take the raid card and hard drives (i already have a G4 server).
