View Full Version : FS-Dead G5 PowerMac (MUST REPLACE SOON)

Hey guys, this is something I didn't think I'd have to do.
The G5's logic board is dead, and it is 750 dollars to replace it.
here are the specs on the machine:
Dual 2.0 Ghz G5 (april 2005)
4 gigs of ram (maxed out)
Radeon 9600 128 mbs graphics
160 gig drive
Superdrive
Tiger is on the machine, but I can't get access to anything since it is dead.
I have a 15 inch dell lcd display I could sell with it along with the white apple keyboard and mouse.
I also have a unopened refurbished Airport extreme that I ordered for the machine but obviously I would end up never installing it because the G5 is dead.
I might be willing to part it out, and if it doesn't work out here I'll just throw it on eBay and hope for the best.
I'll get some pictures as soon as I get back from the Apple Store with the G5.

Sorry to hear its crapped out on you :(
I'd be interested in the ram if you part it out. How much for the 4gb shipped to the UK?
EDIT: Forgot to ask, what is the ram? 4x1gb, 8x512mb? cheers

If you part it out I'd take the case off your hands... and I'm within driving distance so I could come pick it up :)

The ram goes like this: 4x1gb.
Shipping to the U.K. is usually ridiculously expensive. If you are willing to pay the shipping price to get it from here to there, I'd be willing to do it.
Is there anybody out there that would take the whole machine off my hands so it would make this process a bit easier?

Yeah, it normally is, but with it only being 4 sticks of ram Im thinking it could be cheap. Let me know if the whole thing doesnt sell and we'll see if we can make a deal.

Not sure, there is still a working processor in there, ram, hard drive, optical drives, power supply. (I paid 100 dollars for Apple to run a diagnostics check on it).
I'm looking for someone to take the entire thing.

Hmm...Maybe $250. Keep it mind that there is at least a $750 extra that someone would spend to get this back up and running. I would consider it maybe if you got rid of 2GB of RAM.

Yeah that is tough, however right now if you want to sell it as whole then I don't think you will get much more since it can't be used at all. Maybe if you sell some RAM and then the rest as a whole. Like sell 2GB then the rest together.

I would try taking it to eBay. I know, I know, everyone hates that response.. but it's surprising how much broken machines can fetch. Here are two that I could find: one (http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Tower-for-parts-or-repair-Powermac_W0QQitemZ260114085864QQihZ016QQcategoryZ51036QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) and two (http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-2-5Ghz-512MB-80GB-parts_W0QQitemZ120118713775QQihZ002QQcategoryZ51036QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) - both fetched $700.
You could also strip down the system a bit (ie: sell the RAM separately), which might give you a bit more.. I don't know how much that RAM goes for nowadays.

Thanks for the advice and those links to those listings. I'm not scared to bring it to eBay. I'm looking to set up a listing tonight.
The ram goes for about a 100 a stick. There are 2 ram sticks that were added in there and 2 that came with the machine, I think. I'm not completely sure though.

Well then I would definitely take it to eBay. But I would set it up on eBay with only 1GB of RAM, and try selling those other 3 sticks separately - I think you'll get more. Those other machines didn't have much RAM, and one of them didn't even have a HD, so I think you could very well fetch $700 for the machine itself, plus the $300 for the RAM, and you're looking at $1k. Not quite enough to buy another setup right off, but still not too bad for a machine that's otherwise worthless to you.

I'd only be able to take out 2 gigs of ram. There needs to be matched sets of ram on this machine.
It would be nice if I can make 700 dollars for this.

What's up with that dude? Stop wasting your time reading the web and ship him the freaking card! You're really losing a lot of respect around here.. I can't believe you'd keep posting in this forum when there's a thread about how bad of a seller you are! Get with the program dude... ship it and refund his shipping prices. You'd get more by parting it out. It'd be more trouble, but you'd actually get something for it. You already have people who want the case and maybe the memory. The drives might be worth something too. People barely want working G5s now that CS3 is out, let alone broken ones. Sorry.

The listing ended on Sunday Night, it is now Tuesday night and I have no response from this guy that is supposed to pay me.
I'm giving it a day or 2 until I start reporting giving bad feedback.
I have e-mailed him 4 times.

I'd use it as an excuse to escape. The ram alone is worth nearly that.
I'd part out all four sticks. Leave it ram-less.
Oh, and don't mention what the cost of a replacement logic board will be. That's Apple's quote - they aren't the only source of such things.
Start it at $.99 + buyer pays actual shipping. You should probably get the $500 for it that the guy bought it for, once the bidding ends.
That'd leave you with $900ish.

May 30, 2007, 01:16 AM
Oh, and pull the hard drive too. You'd be insane to sell the system without wiping it. Either hold onto it or, if you can, get your hands on an external enclosure, wipe it, and sell it. You'd probably get $40 or so for that.

Yeah, sorry man just letting you know what I can do. Sounds like a crappy situation you're in, but not many are willing to buy used broken machines.
$75 for the pair because there is no guarantee that these will work with my machine (these G5s are notoriously picky with their ram ... i've had many returns just to get a good pair). I'm really only looking for 1GB (2x512MB) which is $72 new with lifetime warranty (OWC does lifetime replacement ... no questions asked). So, I'm just offering what I can afford to spend on more RAM than I need that may or may not work in my machine (dual 2.5 G5).
Please take another offer if you get a better one. I'd buy you a new Mac if I were rich (as some people on here clearly are; just check out some of the car threads), but I'm not. I could do $100 dollars for a pair if you threw in the keyboard, but I don't think you're willing to sell this low. Sorry man.
Hope you're able to get some decent cash for this G5. I might be able to raise my offer after the first, but I doubt it as I need a new HD for my laptop ... there goes all my cash. :(
Good luck. :)

Thanks for the advice. I know the ram works, since Apple checked it all out, but I understand that it could be incompatible with your machine.
All I have is 4x1 gig sticks. for 2 gigs of ram, I'm sure it is worth more than 120 dollars.
