View Full Version : What songs are currently tickling your fancy???

If there's a music thread doing the rounds then it's almost certain that I'll have either started it or I'll be there... forcing my 'taste' on people.... heh-heh!!
So then what are peoples current fav songs?? about 5 will do... :) maybe alittle explanation if you've got a couple of spare minutes!!
mine...
saint etienne, 'goodnight jack'
taken from; 'good humour'
superb minimlist pop track, with excellent synth trumpet, and harpsichords... and sarah sounds divine!!
pete yorn, 'on your side'
taken from; 'music from the morning after'
for some reason, this track has nailed everything I love about a tune, I can't even explain exactly what, but it's a simlar charateristic to some underworld songs etc etc... it's in the chord combo, the way it drops down... soz if that's too technical!! heh-heh!
juliana hatfield, 'live it up'
taken from; 'bed'
kinda classic alt.rock, has a 'stranglers' tinge to it... + great riff!!
ultravox, 'all stood still'
taken from; 'vienna'
exactly what you'd imagine if punk, ska and the new romantics were juxtaposed.
Stonking guitar!!
curve, 'cuckoo'
taken from; 'cuckoo'
much underated band, but very few rock harder, and with such well defined and beautiful vocals...
So then... bring it on guys... what else should I listen to??

the new calexico album, feast of wire, is pretty good! for individual songs, check out Sunken Waltz, Quattro, Black Heart, and Across the Wire.
sort of...experimental tex-mex? kind of.

Their best album since Throwing Copper, without a doubt, been in the iPod since it came out:D
Along with:
Prayer - Disturbed, an excellent chorus from a truly heavy band
Gay Bar - Electric 6, funny as ******, great vid
The Jack - AC/DC, Bon Scott, Angus Young and a song about STDs ;)
Getaway Car - Audioslave, albums a bit patchy, but this is massive
Since Ive Been Loving You - Led Zep, say no more:D
Others to numerous to mention.

Christina Aguilera
'fighter'
The genre doesn't appeal to me that much but I love the raw power of her voice. Not many can belt it out like Xtina can.
Blindside
'Sleepwalking'
I love this song. I can't really explain why though. I just think it is a great song.
Missy Elliot
'Slide'
Such a great song. This is the song in which she says 'my twinkies look stinky on the benz'. I love this song and Missy Elliot, but the thought of her tickling me is kind of gross. :p
Kidney Thieves
'Dyskrasia'
I love the beginning of this song more than anything else. Great band. I love rocker chicks.
Tatu
'Not gonna get us'
I like the upbeat rythm of his song. I like how it is techno but pop at the same time. I like how the singers are lesbians. I like a lot about tatu :D.
Trapt
'Stories'
Great song with great vocals. I love pretty much everything about the song. Great song. Great when you want to be in a good mood.
Evanescence
'Hello'
This song is just plain beautiful. Amy Lee (I think that's her name) has such a beautiful voice and this song fits it perfectly. Fallen is a great CD.
Madonna feat. Missy Elliot
'American Life Missy Elliot Remix'
Hearing Madonna rap is interesting. Missy elliot rocks. Great duo right here. Just an all around cool song.
Adema
'Unstable'
Nice to hear something new from Adema. Great band. Too bad their new CD has barely any NEW, ORIGINAL songs on it. But this song is good. Classic Adema.
I think that's it for now.

Even though the song is beginning to be overplayed in the Chicagoland area, i'm currently addicted to "The Remedy" by Jason Mraz. Gonna buy the album when I have some time. And money.
I've never been much on the indie music scene, I'm moreso all over the indie film scene.

PowerMan 5000- "let the Goodtimes Roll" this is the best cover of the song that I have ever heard :)
Dry Cell- "ordinary"- this band sounds similar to Likin Park, but is so much better with such raw talent, the song has such a great sound to it it just is.
Soil "great Black 7" hard fantastic and full of great of guitar riffs excellent drum beats and great vocals from a great vocalist, Ryan McCombs. I incourage all of you to at least hear some of the 30 second samples on the iTMS.
In flames- "cloud Connected" - This song is just AWESOME, I don't know how to describe it lmao

Phlegm - One night stands.

the best opening:
[live only, i think:] "i'm on top of everything,
a little king of anything,
got a place of mine that's all my own.
i'm inside of me again, a small world all the same,
and i'm alone, and i'm alone, and i'm alone... [then it goes on like this:]
[in the studio release, it starts here:]
step out the front door like a ghost
into a fog where no one notices
the contrast of white on white,
and in between the moon and you
angels get a better view of the crumbling difference
between wrong and right."
beautiful song.

I'm listening to too much stuff to only list 5 :)
The Who -- The Kids are Alright
I've got that 4-CD box set of theirs, "30 Years of Maximum R&B" or whatever it's called. I decided to break it out after not listening to it in forever, and discovered this song :)
Marc Ribot -- Aurora en Pekin
Great guitar player, maybe best known for his work with Elvis Costello. This is a really pretty song--downloaded it from the ITMS :)
Whiskeytown -- Dancing With the Women at the Bar
Great band...too bad their not together anymore.
Pete Yorn -- Strange Condition
Probably my favorite song on this CD.
Billy Bragg & Wilco -- The Unwelcome Guest
Both of these CDs (Mermaid Avenue) are really good.
Elvis Costello -- Indoor Fireworks
Too bad his new stuff isn't as good as this :(
Chris Isaak -- Forever Blue

What was that episode about? Was it the one when they all lost their memory in the magic shop or something, how did the song go? Or just give me the name of it or something.
I didn't like it at all but i just wanna know if its the one I saw, yeah her voice is really cool, quite different, but I think the song was just lame, lyrics were nothing special and as Thom Yorke put it when talking about US alternative stations, it's just another "fridge buzz". Thats if we're talking about the same episode/song. :D

Morcheeba- Big Calm
when you need to settle down
Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
perhaps the greatest album of TRUE hip-hop
Nelly Furtado- Whoa Nelly
Nice album by the girl-you-wish-lived-next-door
Barry White - any album

I currently want what I can't have...currently.
"Tank" the Cowboy Beebop opening song. Tight jazz, real crazy mad, or whatever.
And...the opening song to "Aqua Teen Hunger Force"
"My Name is
Shake-Zula, da mic rula
You wanna trip? I take it to ya."
"Frylock and I'm on top
Rock you like a cop
Meatwad you're up with your knock-knock..."
"Meatwad makin money, see
Meatwad get the honeys, G
Drivin' in my car, livin' like a star
Ice on my fingers and my toes and I'm a Taurus..."
"Cuz we are da Aqua Teens
Make the homies say 'Ho!' and the girlies wanna scream!" x2-3
Anyway...if you watch the show the theme song is pretty funny.
As for life without music
I've gone long stretches without music. It happens when I don't want/need anyone else in my head. Music has a profound effect on people, and my door isn't always open to letting other people's thoughts and emotions alter my own through such a powerful medium...plus...it can be kind of like a drug, some people can't steer their emotions without their favorite substance, be that alcohol, pot, heroine, or music. BaghdadBob refuses to depend on any one or thing to find honest feeling within himself.
Just my personal viewpoint.

I agree - it is a bad System of a Down rip off....
It's kinda sad how Metallica, a very influencial band is now copying other bands.
Plus, SoaD can't be copied.
Some bands/singers who I think are really cool but don't have any songs really 'tickling my fancy' are:
System of a Down
Idie Arie
Nelly Furtado
Linkin Park
Mariah Carey (I just love how beautiful and powerful her voice is, not the biggest fan of her music, but a big fan of her voice - same goes for Xtina Aguilera)
Queens of the Stone Age
and that's all for now.

Hmm.. most of the people I know like the song. The video is pretty cool too. I mean, the setting and presentation is unique. But, I guess it kinda does sound like system of a down. Maybee thats part of the reason I like it so much; normally i'm not even a big metallica fan at all. Just wondering. that makes more sense if you like system of a down, i guess. i don't mind copying on principle. i mean, my favorite band, radiohead, kicked off their latest album with a song that's quite similar to some stuff by a band called "the Dismemberment Plan." i still love it just the same. mostly though, i guess i don't like system of a down at all. it annoys me that they are going in that direction. i like some old metallica stuff, but i have never followed them, and i certainly don't like listening to them very often. they have some good angry songs for the car, plus "Nothing Else Matters." but this is some of the first metallica that i just really don't like.

Jul 2, 2003, 02:21 PM
I haven't had an opportunity to really hear the song very clearly...I've been a Metallica fan/supporter for a while to varying degrees, and I really don't know what to think of it. What I do know is that Metallica has recorded something like 100 songs over the years, and their music has constantly been evolving.
Their songwriting approach has also changed dramatically over the years -- it wasn't until Load that they took a "band-centric" approach to songwriting, up until that point it had mostly been Lars and James hashing things out and then bringing the other two in, and it wasn't until Black Album that they even had any significant producer input....
What's my point? Well, they've been up to it for twenty years now, and there's no way they could have stayed anything close to what they were doing when they first started -- everyone has to get over their teenage rage at some point.
Now, we've all seen Metallica come under assault for what I think a lot of us here support -- fighting for artists' rights. Sad, to me, really, that a bunch of young punks who listen to music spawned from Metallica's hard work, perserverencs, and trend-kicking, would be so ready to turn on them...but I digress.
If you want an opinion from a hardcore Metallica fan I submit to you this: my fianceé was a Metallica fan from before they were known outside LA, and as you probably know, they struggled a lot before they moved to SF. I think most of you have some idea what was going on in the early '80s in LA. Disgusting...so if you saw how different Metallica was in an environment hooked on makeup, poofy hair, and spandex, well, let's just say you would get pretty offended if you heard someone calling Metallica "sellouts," because it would have been the easiest thing in the world for them to sell out when they were small and struggling by just going glam. Well, she likes the song. So there you go, from a hardcore old-school Metallica fan.
Whether that's meaningful or not depends on what you take from it, I'm not saying anyone has to like it -- doesn't tickle my fancy personally -- but if my girl can like it then it simply can't be all that un-Metallica like in my opinion.
And as far as it sounding like anyone else, you can only make so many unique-sounding songs in today's environment. Even Tool has stuff on Lateralus that reminds me of The Fragile, and Tool is insanely unduplicatable.
'Course, Maynard is an open NIN fan. Can you blame hime for being influenced? I don't think so, he's too talented and accomplished a songrwriter to begrudge. Same applies to Metallica, if you ask me.
Which no one does....which is why I ramble ;)

Only five?! It's quite hard to list only five tracks, really. That way, it's only a snapshot of the moment...

I listen to a lot of mainstream stuff. You can't buy a lot of obscure records in S. Korea so a lot of the bands listed above are new to me.
Currently:
1) Audioslave: the whole album. It's been in my car's 8-CD changer for months. I thought I was being "different" for listening to it but one of my friends told me that it went, like, double platinum in the States. (My picks are "What you are" and "Shadow of the Sun.")
2) Oasis: everything. A lot of people hate these guys because they're jerks and all their music sounds the same. I think the first could very well be true but I prefer to say that they have a winning formula (as far as their sound is concerned) and they stick to it. (I like the singles "Idler's Dream" and "Full On.")
3) Soundgarden: Superunknown. I dusted off that CD recently and threw it in the changer. I guess when I first listened to it I didn't appreciate the complexity of it. 99% of popular music is in 4/4 time (my stat). Soundgarden try a variety of time signatures in their music. That shows talent, in my opinion. ("Fell on Black Days" and "The Day I Tried to Live" are wicked.)
4) I played Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville" for my English classes this week. I deleted some of the lyrics and they had to fill them in. I love that tune.
5) Also, I just picked up "Earphoria" by the Pumpkins and Corgan's new work with "Zwan." I can't comment on them yet.
6) Oh, almost forgot...Dave Matthews Band, Live in Chicago (Chicago, right?). Love the jammin' in his live stuff.
Great thread.

that's one way of saying it.... :p :p :p
I can remember seeing Oasis live back in 1993, they seemed so fresh, and vital... then all the beer boys got into them... that's when it went downhill... :(
Zwan are v.cool... I don't think you'll be disappointed with their album! ;)

Of course if you are one of those people who thought Re/Load was "alternative music" and sounded like Nirvana or Pearl Jam then this discussion should just stop now 'cause we obvioulsy have vastly different qualifications for what it takes for one band to sound like another. ;)
IMO St. Anger is a transition album (like the Black Album and Ride the Lightening before it). And like their previous transition ablums St. Anger feels incomplete or "off" in parts. It's like the band knows where it wants to go, but doesn't know quite how to get there. RtL, IMO, is a perfect example of this. While I like all the trax on RtL it's not one of my favorite Metallica albums because, as a whole, it feels kinda schizophenic to me. Some songs are an evoloution of the speed metal from Kill'em All, while others are more complex and melodic and are clearly stepping stones to what appears on Master of Puppets (their best album IMO).
Wow... now that I've completely ranted and gotten OT I think I'm gonna shut up and get some lunch. ;)

And "Orion" is the shiznit. Really.
Anyway, I agree that Metallica isn't the same anymore (nor should they be, even as big a fan as I am of their old stuff), but that's BS to say they're ripping anyone off. For christ's sake people, you can't smash a lamp with a candlestick in bunny slippers in a way that hasn't been done already these days. And Metallica was writing music when SOAD was learning to count. Give the men their dues, even if you don't like their music.
Metallica is just so easy to pick on. I'd like anyone here to write a hundred songs and have every song you write be like a unique and beautiful snowflake to which there is no comparison.

"Coldplay Toronto Concert: June 11, 2003" --- Perfect quality. ;)
Tupac -- "Thugs Mansion (Acoustic) " Great song, even if you're not a 2Pac or rap fan.
Four Tet -- "Hands"
The Bad Plus --- "Silence Is The Answer" Modern Jazz. I don't like jazz, and yet I'm HOOKED!!! on this album. That says a lot about The Bad Plus as a jazz trio, I'd say.
Spoon --- Chicago At Night.
Red Hot Chili Peppers --- "Around The World".
Kings Of Conveniece -- "Winning A Battle, Losing A War." They're like a Norwegian Simon and Garfunkel. Their songs are done in English. ;)
Lemon Jelly -- "Space Walk"
Röyksopp -- "Remind Me".
Sorry that's 9 songs. I hate it when someone asks me to limit the number of songs I can list. I don't see the point, and can never do it.

Hm
"Otherwise" by Morcheeba.
I've been trying to cop almost all of the arrangements from Charago since i got it. Brilliant album, from beginning to end.
"Group Four" by Massive Attack.
Liz Fraser. Brilliant production. Paranoid lyrics. Everything radiohead wishes they could be and a guitar breakdown at the end that's meaner than any metal band.
Did I mention the production? :)
"Air Batucada" by Thievery Corporation
I'm more into music for the living room than for the dance floor and this song is perfect for having a nice margarita, with the windows open, feeling the summer breeze, chilling with some friends and sharing some special smoke. Plus, I have all of their White Albums. ;)
"Method to the Madness" by Gretchen Lieberum.
Tight piano, swett smokey sexy jazz melody, slippery upright bass line and a brilliant and inspired breakdown by Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5.
"Quente" from Cafe Del Mar Vol. 9
A little "Girl from Ipanema" inspired Bossa track with nice muted trumpets and chunky boomy guitar riffs. And a haunting vocal. Perfect Chill out Bossa tune.

@MoxieMike: You may want to try out "Cinematic Orchestra". They (or I should say "He") has an album called "Everyday" that sounds like it's right up your alley, although a bit slower than Thievery Corp, and a bit more hip-hop inspired. Songs like "Flite" and All That You Give are interesting.

well, i went to see 28 Days Later not too long ago and thoroughly enjoyed the music to it. so i went around austin today to a few best buys, barnes and noble, and borders... no one seems to have the stinking album. very annoying. so i am working on getting it off the net... had to punch up soulseek, as there are a lot of bad recordings probably seeded by the recording company or what have you. shame indeed. i'll buy it when i get a chance, but looking for a relatively new CD in so many places and not finding it really pissed me off...

Ok...
SONG: O Girlfriend by Weezer
What an amazing song. The chords and melody make me feel like I am wrapped in a velux blanket and being fed cream of potato soup.
SONG: Wind Me Up by Fastball
Good "beatlesque" pop. Too bad Fastball fell out of favor at radio.
SONG: Poem by Taproot
Pretty much everyone I know hates this song. I don't know why. It rocks and has a good melody. What more do I ask?
SONG: Amsterdam by Guster
i have liked Guster for a long time. If they are not careful, this could be their breakthrough hit (not that it will get played on the radio, so never mind...)
SONG: Good Year For The Roses by Elvis Costello
SONG: Man Out Of Time by Elvis Costello
Both of these songs are so beautiful, but not wimpy. Meloncholy but not mushy. I was never a big Elvis Costello fan, but I saw him on the RockandRoll halloffame induction ceremony, so i decided to take another look. I am not sorry I did.
This was hard to limit it to 5. Here are a few others:
I'll Be Back by The Beatles
Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Raiders
Massachusettes and Run To Me by the BeeGees
You Don't Have to Say You Love Me and Little Sister by Elvis Presley

Lately I've been listening to the following:
"Bloodsport" by Sneaker Pimps -- Absolutely great song from a not bad (although not great) album. It reminds me so much of Eurythmics, which is not at all a bad thing.
"Showroom Dummies" by Kraftwerk -- It's unbelieveable how catchy this song is. The entire album it's off of, the famous "Trans-Europe Express" is constantly dark an creepy, while still having catchy pop appeal.
"Brise" by Malice Mizer -- I had listened to Malice Mizer's "Merveilles" album a lot this last winter, but somehow I didn't quite realize how delightfully pleasurable this song is until two weeks ago when it came on as I was playing my iTunes library on random. Of course, I'm not fluent in Japanese, so I'm not entirely sure what the vocalist is actually signing, but it always brings a smile to my face :) (<see?)
"Famous" by The Lascivious Biddies (http://www.biddies4ever.com)
A friend of mine in NY has been to three of these girls' conerts, and has become almost totally enamored of them. "Famous" (http://homepage.mac.com/soggybagel/.Music/Famous.mp3) is a song with simple but clever lyrics, and stripped down but fun execution. Delightful to listen to.

>Pretty much everyone I know hates this song. I don't know why. It rocks and has a good melody. What more do I ask? (Groovsonic)
One of Taproot's best songs. I have both of their albums. If you don't have their first album, Gift, check it out. If you like Poem, you'll probably like Gift.
Some people are just anti-Taproot, for whatever reason. Perhaps it's the nü-metal taste of vocals that turns people away. But the thunder on the subwoofer and the positive Taproot outlook is a solid alternative to the negative nü.
Another recent song on my mind:
Trapt -- Hollowman
Lots of AC/DC...good stuff. ;)
Some Coldplay, more Rage Against the Machine.
[edit: I've also been listening to a lot of Oasis. A lot. For some reason, they remind me of when I lived in Surrey. (Near Woking, iGav.) ;) :)]

...he used to be a member of "The Wild Bunch" though, the soundsystem that turned into...

..."Massive Attack" (he actually co-wrote some of the songs on "Blue Lines", e.g. "Karmacoma" and performed on one or two tracks... he later re-recorded a new version of that song on his first album.)

heh-heh-heh... you love it!! :p :p :p
Juliana totally rocks... she's on tour with Evan Dando at the mo, as his bass player... well bummed that she's not been over here in donkeys though!!
The mid 90's she got the press, and I've been a fan for 10 years, now you'd be hard pushed to find any of her records over here.. :( (except Amazon of course) and even worse is that I can't see anytime in the future when she's likely to do a solo tour over here...
My fingers are crossed she'll be playing some dates on the East Coast next summer when I'm stateside for a couple of months!!

You think you could pass me both of those, I have one version, mine sounds acoustic, but seems to clear to be live.

Trapt isn't bad. I think my favorite Trapt song will always be (my version of) Hollowman.
I'm relistening to Stories. It's not too bad.
Songs like that remind me of the more "forgotten" Hoobastank.
Current song: Hoobastank -- To Be With You
It's less lyrical and more musical than Trapt's Stories, and I think it flows a little better than Stories.

Argh Hollowman is the only song I don't like by Trapt. Hoobastank is a great band.
I prefer more vocally centered music rather than instumentally-centered music.
I like songs I can sing along to.
Check your email soon wes :).

I think Hollowman is a pretty good song, but the very long outro annoys me. Echo, Still Frame, The Game, When All is Said and Done, Made of glass... I was going to say are my favourites, but I might as well list the whole album, seeing as it was going that way. ;)

My fav trapt songs are definitely:
stories
echo
still frame
and headstrong.
But I like all of 'em (minus hollow man - and it probably is because of the annoyingly long outro).

very eclectic tastes here. some of the songs I'm listening to lately include:
Clocks by Coldplay
Take Five by Dave Brubeck
All Along the Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix version)
Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters
Pavement Cracks by Annie Lennox
Waters of March by Jobim
But I could just as easily be listening to Hank Williams Sr., k.d lang, Frank Sinatra or Benny Goodman

sometimes i hear a song and i think it's not very good, but then it grows on me
two recent examples are "intuition" by jewell and "st. anger" by metallica
i still don't think the songs are great but they certainly are not terrible like i thought they might be
