My sister, a college student, has an iBook and it has pleased her very well. I think iBooks are perfect for students, and apple has managed to get their prices way down.
Let me see what I can find:
iBook 900Mhz 12.1 (http://dealmac.com/articles/52780.html) - $1199
iBook 600MHz 12.1 applecare - $949 (http://www.smalldog.com/wag13215/atdealmaced/)
iBook 800MHz 14.1inch - $1299 (http://www.expercom.com/product_detail.html?PRODUCT_ID=210566)
The first one looks like the best price, but I would recommend checking out dealmac (www.dealmac.com) - they have been a great help to me in the past.
Hope that helps,

Another good site is Low End Mac (http://www.lowendmac.com/deals.shtml). They also list good deals on new, used, and refurbished Macs.

I don't think getting an ibook is a good idea unless all you want to do is internet and MS word. If you must have a laptop, get a refirb powerbook G4 or look on ebay for a cheap PowerMac G4, they are coming quite cheaply now the G5s are going in August.

3 Questions:
How much are willing to spend?
Are you a college student? (you can get an edu discount from Apple)
Where are you (what State, if in the US)?
edit: make that 4. What do you want to do with your computer (casual web-surfer or audio/video/imaging)?

for a student, an iBook is the way to go. A 900MHz iBook is WAY more than enough to run Word and internet. The price benifit is just too much to pass up - especially for a college student that is tight on money.
Yes, PowerBooks are going down in price, but they are not the best option for a college student who is tight on money and probably wont use the (Altivec) apps that benifit from the G4.
