View Full Version : Top 50 Posters Extrapolated into the Future
Doctor Q
Jul 4, 2003, 03:32 PM
Today is a holiday (a day off school and work for Independence Day in the U.S.), so I did a little number crunching just for fun. I extrapolated the MacRumors Top 50 Posters (http://forums.macrumors.com/memberlist.php?s=&what=topposters&perpage=50) list to see how it might look in 6 months, a year, or at the end of time (the limit as time advances). I captured the list and put it in a spreadsheet. I used the post count for each of the top posters and assumed that each member will continue to post at the same rate that he/she has posted since joining.
The results are of course estimates. The computation can't be entirely accurate for the following reasons:
1. Members change their rate of posting. Those who post more frequently now than in the past will tend to show up too low in the list and those who post less frequently now than in the past will tend to show up too high in the list.
2. Members who are not currently among the top posters may join the top posters despite being omitted from this exercise. To avoid missing the most likely new top-50 members, I started with the current top 75 as my raw data.
3. New members join and current members disappear.
4. Total accuracy would spoil the fun!
Top 50 Posters as of today and estimated top 50 posters in 6 months, 12 months, and at the end of time

Observations:
1. Mr. Anderson (nee Dukestreet) will apparently remain unchallenged.
2. The most rapid ascent is tazo, estimated to jump to rank 26 in 6 months, rank 16 in a year, and level out at rank 7.
3. The most rapid descents (though not very rapid) are MacAztec and Durandal7.
4. The end-of-time rankings necessarily reflect post rates, not current post counts.
5. If I don't soon get a life, I'm destined for the Top 50 Posters list next Independence Day.
Disclaimer: Having a high post count or a high post rate doesn't mean that you are a better person or that your posts are of good quality. But post counts are a reflection of the time and attention members give to MacRumors, and they are interesting in that regard. Don't spam!

Good Work!
But are these numbers based on total posts or posts/<time period>, say posts a month?
Mr. Anderson
Jul 4, 2003, 03:41 PM
hahahaha! At least you mentioned you need to get a life.
So what did you do to make this calculation?
What about graphs? And what are the post numbers?
Thanks for making me smile! Although I will say that things might change and I won't be unchallenged till the end of time....;)

thanks that was pretty interesting to read, not sure why you took the time to do it but hey does it really matter?
I'm some what surprised that I'm up there at 46 though, do I really post that much?
Doctor Q

For each of the top 75 posters, I computed
current post count + ( #posts/day * #days until target date)
Then I sorted the results and captured the top 50.
It took a couple of hours, partly because I was using AppleWorks (I should have used Excel) and because I forgot that MacRumors turns multiple spaces into single spaces when you post, even if you use a monospaced font. Hence the periods.
I'll post the actual counts shortly, since they may be interesting too.

I didn't make the list?!?!?! Bu....but I've been spamming like crazy!!!
Okay okay, so my post rate isn't very high, but I've been posting like crazy over the past 3 months (I've been a member for 6-7 months). I'll get my avatar soon enough. Don't you worry. I'll be at the top of that list in 2 years. Now if I could only figure out a way to get Mr. Anderson and the rest of the top 10 banned, or at least disappear for a while. ;)

wow, that's pretty funny. if you really want to waste some time, you could incorporate the change in post rate over time into the equation. i know there are users whose average has decreased over time (like alphatech, he doesn't post anymore, so his posting average is slowly going towards 0 (at the end of time). might change your data at least a little (and take a hell of a lot more time off your hands ;))
nice going, man :p

Jul 4, 2003, 04:58 PM
That's very interesting indeed. I didn't think that I would show up at all since I took time off and had slowed down before that.
Well, it's nice that you have a hobby. ;) Well done.
i've often wondered if these forums are going to be around in 5, or even 10 years time.
i guess next year we'll have to bring this thread back and see if doctor q's projections were accurate.
oh yeah, 3000. ;)

In 6 months, if I have nothing better to do, I can get the latest numbers and that'll give me a more current posting rate. Then the numbers for members like AlphaTech and cleo who have slowed down, or others who have sped up, will produce more accurate predictions.

thats pretty cool, dont know about me though. i joined about 2 years ago just to say something. but i really didnt start posting until a year ago. so i dont look at my post count very accurate because it keeps getting bigger each day because i know i post way more than 5 a day. i was always curous what my post count would be if posted as much then as i do now.

I didn't even know I was on the list... And if I don't keep up, I won't be on it very long...
I wonder if this will encourage people to spam to try to get on top???
At least we have good mods who try to keep the spamming down to a minimum...

Here are the projected counts for the current top 75 posters.
I added the "million days from now" column for fun. My real "end of time" rankings were determined by the post rates since, as time goes to ininity, the current post count becomes insignificant and only the post rate matters (good news for ambitious new members).
I hope you really do have 19,261,737 interesting things to say, Mr. Anderson!

Notes:
1. At the end of time, MrMacman and yzedf will be tied, because they had the same post rate at the moment I captured my data. The same is true for Durandal7 and AmbitiousLemon.
2. Because of current post counts, MrMacman will be slightly ahead of yzedf and Durandal7 will be slightly ahead of AmbitiousLemon at any time before infinity, even a split second before the end of time. Such is the wonderful nature of mathematics.

That's.....worrying. Just out of interest Dr. Q: do you have a significant female in your life? If not, please try and find one. It seems to me that you have far too much free time on your hands ;) It put a smile on my face though, thanks.
I'm surprised that I'd still be in the top 50. Since may last year i've not been posting anywhere near as often as i used to, so my average will no doubt continue to fall. I'd be interested to see what info you could extrapolate, if you do the same analysis 6 months from now. Please, make sure you do it.
Did I mention that you need someone to take up your time? :)

Thank you Doctor Q for an admirable job well done. I'm quite suprised by the results, never would have thought that my rank would be that high. It's a very intersting fact to know though!

But, wdlove, it's not a fact. Note Doctor Q's statement in the beginning of the thread:
>The results are of course estimates. The computation can't be entirely accurate for the following reasons:
>1. Members change their rate of posting. [etc.]
>2. Members who are not currently among the top posters may join the top posters despite being omitted...[etc.]
>3. New members join and current members disappear.
>4. Total accuracy would spoil the fun!
It's speculation.
Well, at least I can estimate how much free time I'll have during my college years. :)

Did I mention that you need someone to take up your time? Thanks for your concern, folks, but don't worry too much about me needing to get a life. I like to tease myself about being a computer/math geek, but actually I have plenty of friends, relatives and interests. This top-50-posters experiment combined three of my interests: math, computers, and MacRumors, so it suited me just fine. But I also found time today for other activities:
* I finished a book by Robert Cormier.
* I listened to music. Mostly rock 'n roll, but also the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Sousa, best known as the Monty Python theme song.
* I read user manuals to figure out how to use two new gadgets -- a new portable phone/answering machine and a new digital camera (Canon PowerShot A70) -- and took some practice shots.
* I went to a Fourth of July block party, ate, visited, and played ping-pong and foosball for at least an hour.
* I watched some fireworks and took long exposure night shots with the new camera. I got some great shots of kids making circles in the air with sparklers.
* I changed a roll of toilet paper that was running out.
Pretty good for one day, eh? When I have a day off, I like to make the most of it!

U have already made a name for yourself around here. Maybe a little over a year ago, people were more known for either having an avatar or by the amount of posts they carried under their names. Nowadays, most of us are completely unaware of who's got what.

I'd just like to caution everyone that this is just in fun and that its not reason to change your posting habits by spamming to get higher post counts. :D
Post count isn't that big a deal and you don't actually gain anything from having more or less. It quality of posts, not quantity that works for you here. ;)
And I understand the irony of this coming from me....:D

My Techniques?!? I don't have any....I just have a tendency to get involved with a few too many things....;)
And I do keep the spam to a minimum or avoid it altogether.
And you know, a long time before 1 million days from now, I'll have stopped posting as frequently as I do now - so even in a year this chart could have some significant changes (it should anyway). :D

Its one thing to obviously replace a letter for another one, its another to complain about a little umlaut that not everyone knows how (or cares how) to go out of their way and form.
Its just that she makes a big deal about it every time its misspelled and its rather anoying, I don't correct any and everybody that spells my name wrong..http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=251202

actually none of these messages here actually fall under the federal government's definition of 'spam' as:
1. each message has a way to contact the author
and
2. each message has a way to be deleted and/or have the user removed from a mailing list.
how do i know this? see my sig.
actually, none of this holds true as the federal law covers email only, not forum posts. ;)

I don't have a problem with community discussion really. It's an open place to talk about your life and technology within it. I just have a problem with threads about, "How many bananas have you slipped on in your life?" and, "What's the best kind of Ramen?". There are other forums more appropriate for that. Now if you want to discuss your home stereo or your new car or your camping trip showing off your photos you took with your digital camera that cool.
Doctor Q
Jul 8, 2003, 02:03 AM
I understand your point.
Another way to think about it: If we were all strangers meeting for the first time simply because we shared an interest in Macs, it would be kind of odd to immediately start talking about how many bowls of Ramen we've slipped on or the best brand of banana soup. On the other hand, if we were already online friends who had been talking about Macs with each other for a while, and therefore we felt we knew each other, then expanding into non-Mac topics makes more sense. So if a newbie posted about where he/she is in school, it might seem a little out of place, but a thread about how ibookin' is doing in school (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29440) would be perfectly fine because we are already familiar with ibookin' from other threads.
Of course, the degree to which each member is known by other members varies across the spectrum, so there's no way to measure or regulate this. I don't think we'd want to anyway as long as non-Mac discussions don't interfere with the "more important" threads. I trust the judgment of the moderators to weed out useless threads -- even those I've contributed to!

You have a point but usually even a thread with a familiar member about there life the topic usually has some part of it that is about Macs or computers or just technology in general. In the case of the rediculous Banana Ramen Slipping thread that just doesn't exist and has no context to tie it with a Mac/Technology site.

It's true. And i'll mention all of my plans for world domination, however, taht will be made easier by the fact that we're the last two standing. We'll take over and bio-engineer the perfect woman (the Sensual Woman--herbaliser track!)

Hmmm... I wonder. When post counts start getting into the trillions, will vBulletin display them with comma (or period) separators, in scientific notation, or as big ugly hard-to-read integers? This is certainly a serious problem, perhaps as serious as the problem of how all those still-in-use 1960s COBOL programs will cope with Y10K. ;)

When I come across news items or web sites that I think would be of interest to others like me who are interested in a variety of traditionally geeky topics (as opposed to a single subject like astronomy), I would post about them if there was a suitable ongoing thread for such things, but I wouldn't want to annoy everyone by starting new threads for each such item. So we should lay low until everyone forgets about the geek thread, and then we can start a News for Geeks thread. (Gee, I sure hope nobody is listening right now.)

In 6 months, I'll be able to make another 6-month prediction using post rates measured over the 6-month period from July 2003 to January 2004, at least for those members in the current top 75. This should be more accurate than these first-round predictions, which had to be based on the post rates from the full time of membership.

for the sake of long term accuracy, at least for the long term posters at infinity (or long term over several years), only include posters here at least a year and/or posters with over 500 posts or 1000 posts
the longer you require the poster to be here and the larger the posts you allow as a minimum, the more accurate your predictions will be and the likelihood of the curve fitting a normal distribution
because if some newbie comes here and posts 100 posts in his first day or two, he will be a statistical outlier and not a valid part of the sample population
well, you know what i am getting at anyway...i like your list very much and it is very interesting...keep up the good work

I captured only 75 member's worth of data because I could only get the post rates from the profiles, one member at a time, and I wasn't willing to do that 19,186 times! But now that I think of it, if I base the data on deltas (the difference in post count from one measurement to the next) from now on, I can capture all that from the top poster list in one "swell foop", so I will be able to automate the whole process.

For some reason I am more accepting of the political forums even though I avoid them because they are swimming with 6feet of ************. In any case though they are usually spam free and not burdened with a bunch of newbies posting one word one liners. I think a thread should have a thoughtless one-liner % limit. If it increases above 20% off all the posts then the thread is immediately deleted.

2. as such, it does not draw on for more than a day or so
3. it includes more than 2-4 people.

I disagree. I think a conversation within a thread is appropriate if a single rule is met:
1. The posts are of use or interest to other members.
If that's true, then jelloshotsrule's rules (say that three times fast!) need not apply.
Example: Suppose that, for some reason, Steve Jobs and arn wanted to publicly discuss the conditions under which MacRumors would post leaked Apple info (like the mistakenly-posted G5 specs). I'd be happy to follow that thread, even if nobody else posted and it went on for a while. Want a more realiistic example? Um, er, I can't think of one.

ok..... then if you don't like the threads that don't 'interest' other people then just don't look at them.
btw im not pushing for a chit-chat forum, I am just stating my opinion, not suggesting anything. I don't want anyone to think that I am still hooked on getting a chit-chat forum.

It's a question of volume scem0. It becomes an issue when it is all a member posts.

Exactly. There is little difference between a spam thread filled with people thowing one liners back and forth and people just posting to see if they can get the first post. Both are annoying and neither are value added filler to the site.
I don't think you need more then one person to post to a thread as long as it is a complex and interesting series of posts. Not just about what they are wearing or eating at the moment.

Well, this is in community discussion so it's moderated a bit more lightly.
I think some spam can get through but if it's more obvious it will be shut down.
I think the only place that's less moderated would be the Private Forum or most probably the mod forum ;)

That is correct. There is some how was your weekend stuff in the private forum but when your talking about 20 or so active contributors in the private forum it really doesn't get to be a problem. it's only a problem when there is a bunch of it happening in the public forums and then a bunch of newbies join up and see these forums so they think that it's okay to do that. It sets a standard that we don't want. That's the whole thing before you start a new thread you have to think how it will affect the whole site because there is a constant influx of new members and if everyone of them sees the spam threads and thinks it's okay then there is a flood of it in all the forums and even in established threads. I think that's why the private forums are a good thing. By the time a member becomes a contributor normally they already no the boundaries and etiquette of these forums.

I wish there where a program that can detect what topic is currently being discussed all through out a thread.
And then place it on a time-line.

I corrected the "End of time" column to omit Shrek, who was banned. MacAztec and AmbitiousLemon and Durandal7 and sparkleytone move up and member cb911 joins the Top 50.

wow, is he a marine biologist?
where i live, there are three major west coast marine biology schools/institutes (MBARI, CSUMB, and Hopkins Marine of Stanford) and often the first assignment they are given is field work in hawaii
...specifically work with the turtles in the northern islands of the hawaiian chain

you do great work, doctorq
i know i will fall out of the top ten since i don't post the way i used to any more, but i will probably be number 7 or 8 on the list next month
at one point in the past, i expected miss vniow to be the number one poster and surpass eyelikeart and mr anderson...i think the way things are going, eyelikeart will become the number one poster, but he and mr anderson will stay head and shoulders above any other posters for a long time to come
i do think that after a time though, wdlove or macbandit will be in the top three posters
i suspect two years from now, eyelikeart and mr. anderson will both be in the top three with wdlove, macbandit, macmaniac, or even miss vniow....but jelloshotsrule, durandel7, and king cobra are always possible to be in the top three in the future
i know i may be leaving several other possibilities out for top three posters way down the line since there are some fast movers in the top 50 or top 100 that have not been in the top 10 but are certainly on pace to reach the top 10 very soon:D

well. I'm about 6 months late.
I was on dialup 6 months ago so I wasn't posting so much...and now I'm busy all the time working on my thesis film....so my rate has been doing a nosedive.
I must say I'm impressed that you put this much time and effort into this.
