View Full Version : The villain thread

Movies, TV shows, video games, books, whatever....flash cartoons maybe?
Who's your favorite (most hated) villain in any medium?
Off the top of my head...
1) Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII...most anyone who's played that game through knows what I'm talking about. I would have killed hime with my own hands... He was a bad, bad man. Of course, that was one of the main factors that made FF VII so great, a true hatred of the antagonist...when you're playing an eighty hour game it's good to actually want to get to the end and take out your foe...
2) The Emperor in Return of the Jedi...also a bad, bad man...I cannot think of an actor ever more convincingly portray evil without just seeming insane, or just evilly disturbed (like Kevin Spacey in Seven, also excellent).
3) Celesta from the Coldfire trilogy. Probably mostly from the fact that the Coldfire trilogy (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, and The Crown of Shadows) is just so damn well written. But for those who aren't hip, Celesta is an immortal demon-god born of the human emotion of Sadism. He belongs to a race called the Iezu who are all immortal and born of human emotions and all of whom have a symbiotic relationship with humans. They also have an incredible power of illusion. The way Friedman (author) writes with Celesta is ingenious. So is the whole trilogy, IMO, and the protagonists are amazingly compelling too...go read it!
Hope this thread takes off, I know we all like a good villain...
What are yer'all's faves?
One of my long-time faves is the villain in Patriot Games. I can't remember his name, but that boat chase was killer :)

Kahn, in the film Star Trek, The Wrath of Kahn. What a display of intelligence, swarthy self-assuredness and power, with great vocal delivery.

Dr. Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog. No matter how many Sonic games you'd play .. he'd always just run away and find a bigger, badder machine to try to take out the world. I've finished countless Sonic games in the hopes that the final end animation would involve someone (ie Sonic himself) wiping Robotnik's dead body off the screen.

Darth Vader. No question. Dr. Evil is a good runner-up. I don't know anything about the comic books, but Lex Luthor as played by Gene Hackman was a pleasure to watch.

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) in The Shining. No other villain (or good guy for that matter) has creeped me out like this guy ever. Maybe the ghost in the original Japanese version of The Ring.... but that's about it.

Jack Nicholson in The Shining -- good call! Very, very creepy. Love Kahn, havn't seen that movie in so long.
But what about Vader? I'm actually kinda surprised to see Vader listed so much, probably because due to his soft pink underside I just can't hate him. He is a protagonist in a "man vs. himself" subplot of the Star Wars saga -- to me, the Emperor is the real villain, and a total classic. Talk about embodying malignant, sadistic, malicious and vile. Such a fine performance.
How about Kurt Warner? Man, that guy gives me the creeps...

Darth Maul? Hmm! From what I remember of the Phantom Menace, all he did that was remotely evil was try and kill the two Jedis! He didn't actually say anything, and he didn't even have a menacing look - just that stupid grin! The only difference between him and the stromtroopers was that he was a Sith and didn't wear a white suit! The Nazgul were scarey because there was a sense of dread about them when they arrived, whereas with Darth Maul, you just got the feeling that he was some random mercenary, just like any character who shoots at the goodie in a western!
I think the thing that makes the Joker, Hannibal Lector and Darth Vader so evil is that it they seem to have a grudge against their respective foes! They all mock their enemies, toy with them until they are on the point of a breakdown, but then fall at the last hurdle!
Btw; today the Wicked Witch of the East (West?) and Nurse Ratched (from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) were voted as the scariest villainesses, according to a recent British pol. Discuss!

I'm still surprised so many people pick Darth Vader over the Emperor...I mean, the emperor was way more evil than Darth...I wouldn't even call Darth evil, the Emperor was the malignant force behind it all....but anyway.....
Going back to Sephiroth, after getting mad at the stupid Kingdom Hearts game too many times (I wouldn't have bought it if not for the kids) and forgetting where I was in FFX because I put it down for like six months, I am now playing through FFVII again, and being reminded of all the ways in which it was a masterpiece, including, of course, the villain, Sephiroth. Sephiroth is so awesomely hatable. Talk about toying with your foe, he was real bad.
If you play only one Final Fantasy game in your life, make it worthwile -- make it VII.

Billy Bob Thornton. Period.
Not really a villain, but for most ******** up cast, I'd choose everyone from Clockwork Orange. What a messed up movie...

I'm putting my vote in for the Joker as the best villian ever.
Here's a guy who doesn't commit crimes because he wants money or fame. He does it for the laughs.
And taunting Batman with his own helplessness is the most fun for Joker. (think death of Robin)
He loves having a nemisis to poke and prod at. It's like some giant twisted game of psychological chess. He's a very intelligent, very sadistic psychopath.

A little bit of thinking about this led me to remember two characters that affected me when I watched them. Of course, both are from when I was fairly young
1. Evil - Time Bandits
2. General Woundwart - Watership Down
Want a scary damn cartoon. Watership Down is it.

My all time favorite for any medium has to be Dracula. He's so evil but so cool at the same time.
