Hello,

I am interested in selling my imac on ebay and am wondering what a good "buy it now" price to list it for. These are the specs:

IMAC 24"
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
NVIDIA GEFORCE 7600 GT w/256
500GB Serial ATA Drive
SuperDrive 8X (DVDR-DL/CD-RW)
WL kybd, Mse & Mac OS X

Apple care till September 2009

I guess I can try and watch some of the other auctions on ebay but few have the same configuration as mine. Any educated guesses are welcome!

If anyone is interested in making an offer (I'm located in Louisiana) just let me know..btw my ebay name is Sonarghost, just like my forum name.

Thats a tough one. This thing really is maxed out. I can't find any auctions that really help at all although I am sure you already know that.

A few things, Applecare usually doesn't add its value to an auction. A computer with Applecare doesn't sell for much more than one without especially when it is still under the original warranty. Second, you won't get what you paid for to upgrade the CPU. Most people aren't going to be terribly concerned with whether their new iMac has the 2.16 or 2.33 CPU. Also the bluetooth keyboard and mouse aren't going to add much. All told, I think you should set the buy it now for $2499 with free shipping.

What I might do in this case is start the auction on a Friday as a buy it now only and set the price at $2599 with $30 shipping. If it doesn't sell Friday, drop the $30 shipping fee. If it doesn't sell Saturday at $2599 with free shipping, drop it to $2499 with free shipping for Sunday. I would then let it ride until the auction expires and if it still hasn't sold, start an auction at $2000 and have people bid it up to its actual value.

Finally, since there is nothing exactly like this on eBay, I would go with the featured auction. You really need to set it apart or else it may appear to your average buyer as a regular iMac priced far to high. I generally don't use this option but in this case I think the $30 fee would more than pay for itself.

i used to use this technique. it seems like a good idea, but whenever you change your listing, it takes your auction out of their database for a while, so no one can find it when they search for it.

the resale value of the imac not that great. i recently sold a 20" C2D imac that was only a few months old for roughly $400 off of apple store price. and it had Apple OEM 2gb ram, not cheap generic 2gb ram.

I'd say BUY IT NOW at $2000 with $50 shipping. Start the auction low though... 9.99 or something. My auctions always end higher when I start the auction low. It's cause dumb people come along and bid small amounts. Before you know it, you've got a bunch of bids, and people like bidding on auctions with more bids. Somewhat of a auction credibility.

Also, make sure your auction page is nice. That's makes a big difference too.

Here's my math:

$2000 for the iMac
$50 for the upgrade to 2GB (or less now!)
$100 for the upgrade to 500GB (costs about $130 online, but you can sell the original drive)
$149 for applecare...

minus some depreciation... and people don't like factoring tax cause online retailers don't charge tax...

Hopefully, the price is just right for some guy to think, oh, well why pay $2000 when I can get an upgraded one for the same price.

yea.. I agree... didn't I just itemize it for you? Oh well... waste the insertion fee.

This is like the machines I see on craigslist.... you know... "PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz for only $2899, Won't last!"

Have you looked at eBay lately? Here's a brief rundown of 24" iMacs and what they SOLD for (not just listed).
Base 24" iMac with ext hard drive, printer, wireless: $1980
Sealed base 24" iMac: $1800
24" w/ wireless, 2GB, 500GB HD, 7600 GT: $2499 (the closest I have seen to the OP's and this was bought just this morning!)
Sealed base 24": $1695
Base 24" w/ exception of 3GB RAM: $2199

And to the person who said that the resale value of the iMac is not that great, that is simply not true. My MO is to buy an iMac when it is first introduced, use it for nine months, sell it on eBay when the new ones come out and then buy a new model. It has never cost me more than $100 to do so except for the last time when I sold my base 20" with 2GB of RAM and went to a 24" with the 7600. iMacs have amazing resale value and this is made perfectly clear by looking at eBay auctions.

I get the feeling that the OP wants to save money for the upcoming iMac revision.

Apple refurbs go for $1699, and often come with upgrades not listed, like more RAM, or bigger HD, or even faster processors.

I wouldn't pay any more than the refurb price, but that's me.

People routinely pay above refurb price on eBay. I haven't figured out whether it's just ignorance or the auction mentality.

I sold a really nice 15" G4 1.67MHz PowerBook earlier this year on eBay for more than what a refurb was going for.

Go figure.
