Anybody got a really interesting name for their computer? For some reason, I've always named my machines after women. Maybe it's because they're so temperamental :D

8500/150 Powermac - Betsy
G3 Pismo Powerbook- Val
G4 Powermac Server - Nia
G4 Ti Powerbook - Mariko

I used to change mine whenever I was in the mood, but it's been "Superego" for several years now. For those who don't know it's a psychology thing. At the time I had just renamed it from "id".

Right now it's just Supercube

But right now it seems to be attracting a lot of bugs, mostly at night...that could be my LCD monitor, though.

Then I step in.

Perhaps I should call mine the Bugzapper.

when i first saw the icebook ibooks, i thought of calling them the "FUJITSU" lifebook ibooks

that's exactly what they look like to the untrained eye

and the 12 inch powerbook looks like the "ibook plus" to me....or "g4 ibook";)

Usually my Macs just have been "Macintosh HD".
A few exceptions:

Blinky - iMac 333
Nemo - 400 Pismo (it was called that way before "Finding Nemo" BTW)
Spanky - DP 1.25 Ghz PM G4

The Mothership
Network connection setting? You guessed it... The Mothership Connection!

I've always had more fun naming the various drives... Big Booty, Satan's Little Helper, two partitions named Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Heavy Lifter, Back That Ass Up (backup drive of course). I once had a whole slew of syquest cartridges with biblical names beginning with M. It started with Moses since it traveled, then it got tough after a while, Mordechai, Methusila, and a dozen others.

My brother's iMac - superman

My father's old 7200 (with a 7500 mobo and a ZIF G3/400Mhz upgrade) - spiderman

My father's geological workstation - the_hulk

Can anyone detect a certain trend? ;)

Those names are also the network names of the computers. All of them are connected via Airport or the x86 equivalent.

PB G4 550 - G4 PowerBook
PB G3 233 - Old Powerbook

Win2000, 2500XP, Radeon8500 - Marks PC
Win2000, 1700XP, Geforce 3Ti - Doms PC
Win2000, 1500XP, AllinWonder Radeon - Video PC
Win2000, 1200AMD, Radeon - Doms PC 2

I don't believe in calling my computers names since you are making them your friend, while they are just tools. When people start to call their tools names, they are spending too much time with them, this actually causes psycological problems when people reach old age. This is similar to what young children (and some adults) do when they create imaginary friends. I am not trying to judge anyone that does it, just making them aware of the issues.

My primary machine is an 8600/200 tower which I got to take home as a "lovely parting gift" when I got laid off from my last job; it was neglected and ailing when I'd first found and claimed it there, so I'd cobbled it back to health with drives, RAM, cache, and PCI cards salvaged from several other abused and deceased old Macs I'd found languishing in the company boneyard, and therefore, I dubbed it...

ƒrænk€n†ø§h™ :D

My other Mac, first one I ever had and still going strong ~8 years later, is a 7200/75 (W00t! 75MHz, baby! :D ) long dubbed since its infancy as §µßGø†h¡µ§™ (unsurprisingly), but when I finally cured the 8600's remaining post-ressurrection blues, moved all my stuff onto its volumes and started using that as my primary machine, I then wiped and renamed the 7200 to ¶rø†øGø†h¡µ§™ (since the §µßGø†h¡µ§™ drive had moved on up into the tower).

The primary boot volumes have the same names as the Macs' network names; I also have various other volumes named:

§µ¶råGø†h¡µ§™
MætåGø†h¡µ§™
¶æråGø†h¡µ§™
¶ræGø†h¡µ§™
Çrµ¢¡ß£€ (700MB partition for staging CD-R burns  )

(Note: if yr not reading this on a Mac -- and really, why wouldn't you ;) -- those names might look even more like gibberish than they already are, since they use option-key characters aplenty; I only use a regular letter for network/volume names when I can't find a similar-looking option-key character to use instead -- sorta like a Mac variant of "133+ 5p3ak"... :D )

Edit: Hm, apparently the leading curly-S (option-b) characters were the only ones that didn't make it into the post -- got replaced by "?" -- so I edited them to section symbols (option-6) for legibility (relatively speaking :) ).

hehe, most of you won't be able to understand the names since they are German, but I'll try to translate... ;)

1Ghz tiBook - "Bundeskanzleramt" (Engl.: Office of the Federal Chancellor)

loaded SE/30 Fileserver - "Kanzlerbungalow" (Engl.: Chancellor Bungalow)

I still have to make up a name for my soon-to-arrive pizzabox LC... maybe the name of the place in Italy our chancellor used to go to for vacation, mawharharhar :D

Well, I don't agree that by naming something, I am making it a friend. People also name their pets, yet they aren't friends (at least to me).

I name my computers for network purposes -- makes it easier to interact. It is a long-standing tradition for network admins to use one scheme to name all the computers in a network, so I chose the names of the characters in the German version of Sesame Street :)

G3 266: Tiffy (a bit like Big Bird in the American version)
Linux server: Ernie (small and smart :) )
Windows workstation: Bert (big and dumb :) , now out of service)
SUN SparcStation Server: Samson (no equivalent in American version; big brown bear)
exstreamer (MP3-Streamer): Elmo
Sharp Zaurus: Z (no Sesame Street name yet...)
