So I have finally invested money into a wireless AP and have been playing with kismac. Apparently you can't do much with the built-in wireless card in the intel iMac and the newest sub of kismac. Anywho, anyone have a usb wireless card that will work with kismac? Prism2 is the chipset I believe I need. :)
Thanks in advance.

p.s. I don't trust ebay, I have looked but I don't know if what I'm getting is what I can use. :apple:

I had an old D-Link DWL-122 usb adapter. Had a Prism2 chipset on it. Loved it to death - literally. The USB connector fell off the circuit board. I hope you find one!

iHerzeleid appears to want to sell me one. But if anyone else has one they want to sell me, please pm me or post in here a good place to buy them. I fear if I go into best buy's and ask what their usb adapter wireless cards chipsets consists of, I'll only get blank stares :p

No offense to the smart best buy employees (past or present)

where did you buy it? I want to know if the ones on ebay are the right versions/revisions that will work.

Mine says:

Model No: DWL-122 <B>
H/W Ver:A1

Hope that helps, it worked great with my 12" IBook

Prism2 chipsets are difficult to come by in normal outlets these days because they're way outdated (802.11b and WEP only), so no chance best buy or even newegg would have them, so ebay is your best bet.

The Ashton Digital models were easy to find on there, you can actually just search for kismet or kismac and get them, and they're listed on kismac's hardware compatibility list. wrub 2011i is the model number, also labeled 'air dash'. I got mine from this guy on ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/BC-Dealer_W0QQssPageNameZl2QQtZkm

Cost me $11.xx with shipping, it's brand new, and after mounting it in a good spot I can see networks from all over (way better than istumbler on my airport card or even my WRT54GL with DD-WRT in survey). I don't need injection capability, but I just could NOT get my airport to play nice with kismac.

So is it possible to find a card with kismac injection capabilities + wpa compatibility?
Or would I just use my built-in wireless card on my iMac for wpa access, and use the usb card I am looking for to play on kismac (and still do things to wpa configurations)?

Edit: I really hate to make this sound more like a thread that belongs in the peripherals category, just want to make sure that I know what it is I'm trying to buy. :)

As I understand it, ONLY Prism2 chipsets can inject in kismac. Supposedly some linux livecd distros like back|track2 have support for injection with some airport cards (broadcoms I believe), but for kismac it's Prism2 or nothing.

I'm not even sure there's a driver that works for Prism2 in OS X, but it doesn't matter, it's for fooling around with kismac only. You can use your airport card simultaneously if you want, the two cards won't conflict in the OS. The Prism2 can pick up WPA signals, it just doesn't have the ability to join them and use the encryption. You'll definitely want to use your airport for all regular networking tasks.

The kismac interest wore off after a few weeks of looking at ssids and wondering who names their unprotected network with their home address. Even worse is one named "sexxxysadie"...also unprotected, and the usual "FBI" and "youbeenhacked!!!" and "getyourown" type ones. Did pick up some interesting ad-hoc names from companies miles away (perhaps employees on their work computers at home, who knows). There was one named 'poopypants' for a day or 2, and 'jesusheartspr0n' or something similar was probably the best.

Nonetheless it was worth my $12.

D-Link's DWL-122 OS X driver works with most PRISM devices.

Thank you for the responses and comments. I am very excited about my new endeavour and hope to hear back from iHerzeleid soon.

Still waiting for iHerzeleid to respond to my PM. If anyone has one they want to sell me in the meanwhile, just let me know :p

Hi,

does anyone know if the D-Link DWL-122 supports higher than OS X 10.2x i.e. Leopard v.10.5.2?

Thanks.

Actually, you could just use an average Orinoco (Lucent, etc.) Gold or Silver card with kismac as that works great.

Str8edgepunker and iHerzeleid:

I would like to test my network which is WEP encrypted only as yet, but it 802.11g. Will either of these chipsets be useful for my purposes or would I have to connect using 802.11b?

Thanks.
