View Full Version : All of you...a big thank you for being the "Guinea pigs"

I'm a Sprint Treo 700wx owner who wanted, so badly, to purchase the $600+ Apple iPhone. However, i decided to wait for the first wave of guinea pigs (cue all you guys/gals) to purchase the iPhone for me and get the frustrations out of the way.
I really am glad I didn't spend the cancellation fee to leave Sprint for the cr@ppy service of ATT. Along those lines, I'm really happy to read/hear that my Treo 700wx far supercedes the abilities of an iPhone.
Please give yourselves all a pat on the back because you need it. After forking over $600+taxes, $ATT phone/data plan, all the "dead zones, all the dead pixels, having to up up with "EDGE" and not 3G or EVDO, not being able to edit office docs, not being able to record video, not being able to add thousands upon thousands of custom apps, etc, etc.
Myself (and others) apprecaite you all for blowing your $$ on a phone that seriously needs an overhaul....software and hardware wise.
I'll see you all on the flip-side...that is, if your ATT service doesn't drop your call/connection as you go throught the millions of "dead zones".

I know I'm not supposed to feed, but...
Most of the items you mention were known in January or well before the release of the device. AT&T, EDGE, no editing documents, no 3rd party apps, etc.
You are running a Treo with Windows, right? Good choice there. Enjoy that.

i love when people come on to MACRUMORS.COM and post stuff like this and think that they are being funny. only about 4 percent of the people on this forum agree with you, and those are only the trolls. keep it real man, and i will be going to purchase my iphone as soon as the at&t store across the street gets some 8G in stock

He makes half a good point ... the early adopters of iPhone are, in effect, a massive paid beta test pool and focus group. But what's great about the iPhone is that just about every change imaginable can be implemented via software update. So, yes, maybe the first wavers are currently using an 80 percent there product, but they will be able to upgrade along with everyone else. The only areas where they will be left behind is in RAM size and 3G ... if you can live with that, it was worth the early buy.

That can be said of any product, tech or otherwise.
He makes no point other then to sauve his insecurities that he's on side that is dwindling in relevance each and every day and who are still peeved that Palm absolutely let him down with their total lack of innovation for the last 5 years.

hmmm, my iphone works wonderfully, way better than anything I have had in the past. I find it funny the my previous treo 680 had way more problems than my iphone and how many iterations of the treo have we seen so far. I guess the treo is still being beta tested. I won't even comment about all my previous window mobile devices, those things were a pain in the as$.

Enjoy your windows mobile device.
If there was a crime for posting taunting threads in this forum, the punishment would be to force you to use Sprint with a windows mobile device..
Go post on treocentral and post in the "how long till palm dies thread"... it will make you feel better.

Not quite ... in the case of the iPhone, it was never subjected to the kind of mass beta test you'd expect of a completely new interface. This is a far more revolutionary product than Leopard, for example, but the number of people who got to try it out and give feedback was substantially smaller. That's the bad news. The good news is that the hardware in this case is far more extendable than even personal computers. Just about all the nagging complaints that some iPhone users have can be addressed in a free update ... and I bet that update arrives by the time Leopard is out.

What "80% there" product? I just don't get this notion at all. My iPhone does everything it was supposed to do when I bought it. It's streets ahead of any other wireless device I've owned (admittedly, I never would buy or use one of those absurd Treo things).
Don't feel sorry for me, bub.

He meant 80% of the iPhone's potential. There's still a lot more it is capable of doing.

Hmmmmmm.... thats really funny... I switched to my iPhone from a Sprint Treo 700wx and ya know what, my iPhone is far superior other than 3G and 3rd party apps, which I knew about waaaaaaaay before I bought it. And ya know what, my iPhone works so much better and is actually far more useful to me. As far as the cell phone carrier, AT&T is no worse than Sprint is here where I live so that argument is pointless. And comparing the devices, well, the iPhone is more pleasant to use and since Im a media fanatic, it works better than my treo. I had to always reset my treo almost daily because something would stop working correctly.

First of all, I'm not the guy with the Treo, so don't lump me in with him. If you are 100 percent content with iPhone, terrific, Apple got it all right for you. But there's obviously a large pool of people who want more.
Here's the full list from TUAW ... I'm just reporting, I have no personal stake in this one way or another. But I find it bizarre that some people take personal offense when anyone says anything remotely negative about iPhone. It's not your child, please relax. And even if you love it now, it will probably get even better.
From TUAW:
Why isn't iPhone Safari learning to auto-fill my user names?
Why can't I start a search in YouTube, pop over to check the weather, come back and find the results of my search? Instead, the search terminates and the search field clears.
Why isn't there a front-page address book app?
Why can't I get consistent EDGE reception? I live in a major metropolitan area, damn it.
Why can't I just get disk access without having to resort to extreme hackery?
Why can't I SMS more than one person at a time?
Why can't I receive a call while surfing the web like the Sidekick does?
Why can't I just edit an outgoing e-mail address without having to go back and type it all in again?
Why can't I maintain individual calendars instead of having them all lumped together?
Sure, we can meebo, but why is there no built-in iChat?
I hate paying thirty bucks a month for a voice plan that I don't use. I wish I could cancel the voice plan and keep the data plan but AT&T says I can't.
Where's Flash?
When my screen gets all smudgy, why can't I just clean it on my shirt? I hate carrying around the iPhone wipie-cloth all the time. (Chartier claims his T-shirt works just fine). Chris U gets the best results from t-shirts made of hemp. You can also use shield lens care cloths from Hilco and other photography-quality lens-cleaning cloths.
Why does AT&T keep sending me balance updates for my prepaid plan every few minutes, even when I haven't used the phone for anything? When I make a call or text? Fine. Send me an updated balance. But when the iPhone is just sitting there? Puh-lease!
Why can't I delete the last-taken photo immediately from the camera interface without having to go to the photos section? That snapshot button is so super-sensitive, I keep taking pictures I didn't mean to.
I hate having to navigate over to settings all the time. Why can't I just access the settings for a program (e.g. e-mail) from inside the program itself like I can with Weather and Stocks?
The email account UI is positively dreadful. Tap 2/3 times to get into one inbox, then 2/3 times back out, then 2/3 times back into another one is for the birds. I hate the email UI and would love the chance to kick a responsible party in the pants for it.

There are two kinds of iPhone customers or potential customers:
1) Those who are looking for reasons to justify their decision to keep their existing phone/carrier
2) Those who are looking for reasons to justify their decision to buy an iPhone with AT&T service.
But there is something else afoot, and I'm not sure what it is...the need to trash an iPhone and those who love it in the course of making your decision.
It's not enough that the iPhone isn't something you wish to buy, but rather everyone who does is an idiot for disagreeing with you and must be taught some sort of a lesson for our collective insolence.
So the iPhone doesn't do what you want it to do...wonderful.
Don't buy it.
Do you frequent Charmin message boards and tell them all the reasons you prefer Scott bathroom tissue or is this apparent disorder of yours limited to mobile phones?

very good points (even though you missed some)....and those points were all made possible by the beta-testers, no?!
so, back to the OP, I'm just saying "thank you" to everyone who spent over $600 to beta-text the product for me so i can buy version 3 when all the issues are fixed....rather than buy version 1 and version 2...only to complain about all the problems.

But there is something else afoot, and I'm not sure what it is...the need to trash an iPhone and those who love it in the course of making your decision.
That's what happens when the hype for a consumer product becomes overwhelming. Everyone is forced to have an opinion on the iPhone, you can't escape the carpet bombing advertising, the extensive free media coverage and endless viral discussions. Everyone has a conformity/independence instinct that kicks in when faced with a massive public phenomenon. I choose not to watch American Idol, but I feel obliged to say it sucks too. It's human nature. And in America today, it's all opinion all the time so it's asking too much to expect those who say no to iPhone to stay quiet about it.
BTW, social scientists believe that those who speak most loudly against a phenomenon are those most likely to be on the other side in short order ... it's easier to win over a vocal foe than to get someone who has been paying no attention to suddenly have interest.

I haven't hit any dead zones, I have no dead pixels, there is no 3G in my area so that is a non-issue to me, and I came from a BlackBerry 7250 on US Cellular (who only get phones after they've been out for over a year) so I couldn't edit office docs on that thing (I actually don't even use Office) and it didn't even have a camera! Sure it had custom apps, but even the useful apps I found didn't work very well half the time. And did I mention the awful (non-existent) Mac support? I had to use third-party apps on my Mac to sync it.

It's not surprising that a Windows Mobile apologist should have a serious inadequacy problem when faced with a device like the iPhone. Apple has done with the first generation iPhone what Microsoft and Palm have failed to do with their enormous head start. Which is, no doubt, why WM users are fleeing that platform in droves in favor of the iPhone to the tune of over 1/2 million devices sold over opening weekend and counting. Those 1/2 million early adopters weren't upgrading from StarTac's- They were upgrading from other smartphones, mostly Treo's judging from the lines, that didn't have the features that made the iPhone so appealing.
Instead of taking out this frustration on Apple or iPhone users it might make better sense to take it out on the companies that have failed so miserably at making a decent smartphone that does what users expect of it rather than making users do what the smartphone expects of them. At least that way there might be some chance that devices like the Treo might actually make it out of the WM dark ages they have forced their users to endure.
In any case, it's a fair bet that a substantial majority would prefer to be a "guinea pig" for the iPhone then to be encumbered by a Treo running an OS that has barely changed, much less improved, since 2001. In fact, it is arguably the case that it's been Treo users who have been the guinea pigs to a costly experiment run by the misfits at MS that has for the most part failed, a failure whose mistakes Apple has once again succeeded in correcting.
