okay i just got a MBP and i have used windows all my life and i know downloading music is somewhat stupid and dangerous. which of the three options would be the safest other than three
1. Downloading music on limewire on windows, then sending the mp3 files over a closed network onto my laptop
2. using Frostwire on my mbp
3. not downloading music at all
some say it is very safe downloading music on mac's but others say not to do it

there aren't any risks to your system by downloading music etc., but it's still deeply uncool to download music. iTunes provides music at awesome bit rates (256kb/s AAC in iTunes Plus) for pocket change. It's pretty poor to download stuff when there is such an awesome and inexpensive resource so close to you.

Even if they don't have the artist in the iTunes library, what's wrong with going out to buy the CD? Some shops sell CDs dirt cheap; sometimes cheaper than iTunes.

EDIT: do you seriously have 20,000 songs you need to own? I barely find the time to really listen to 3600 songs.

EDIT2: I s'pose if I make an argument, I had better back it up. Let's assume that I am in my mid-20s, and I'm in an up and coming band.

I bought a Fender Jazz Bass for $1700. I'm thinking of buying an Ampeg Bass Amp for $2500, and a speaker cab to go with it for $1000. A good lead sets me back about $50, and I'll need at least 4 of them. I need a whammy pedal for the songs that I play, so that's another $450. I'll need a notebook to record some songs on, so that's another $1600. This setup so far has already set me back more than $7500.

I am signed up with a record company, and we've sold a few thousand albums. The band gets about $5 per album sold (i don't know this figure for sure, just taking a pot guess. I have a feeling I'm being very generous). Lets say we've sold 4000 albums. 4000*5 is 20,000. 20,000/4 (bassist, guitarist, singer, drummer) leaves $5000 each. Then we have to pay for advertising, hiring out places, the cost of touring, the cost of keeping our instruments in good nic, as well as smaller things such as paying rent, buying food, paying bills, maybe supporting a family. How can this guy afford to pay for his equipment, let along living?

For a band which hasn't broken into the mainstream public view, it's a damn tough life. If people don't buy music, they get even less money. So many bands fail because they can't afford to continue.

Okay...You can download music the crappy way or use iTunes. If you think about it after you transfer all you old music and you favorite CDs to the mac and buy ONLY A COUPLE on iTunes you will have a lot of songs. Walmart!?
