View Full Version : FS/T: UNOPENED Original 5GB iPod for iMac / PB G4 or $$$

TRADED!
Yes, a shrinkwrapped 5GB iPod!
This is the original model , not the second revision that says 5GB to distinguish it from 10GB+ models. Super rare and collectible.
Will trade for an iMac / PB G4 or CASH.

ebay seems to be the best place for this sort of thing. They bring good money (few hundred $$)

That's silly to do that. You will regret it!

Cant ebay it, my bank is giving crap and dosn't me pay ebay fees.
As for why I'm selling it, its more for financial reasons. I was planning to replace my 10GB iPod which JUST died, and came across this:D
Might hold onto it...its a feeler!

I would strongly recommend holding onto it.
This is a bona fide collectors item and will be worth lots of money in the future.
How many UNopened First Gen iPods still exist?

I assume less than 10 exist, but I might let it go for the right amount, but impulse says keep it, I'm torn

The only thing that would really bother me is that I wouldn't be the original owner and I would constantly wonder..."Is the iPod really in there?"

This isn't as unlikely as it might sound... shrink-wrapping is easy to obtain. Is there any way to "prove" an iPod is actually in there?

I guess you can tell by the lines on the shrinkwrap, which seem original, and the weigh/rattles.
ANYWAYS, PICS!!!!:

I was thinking the same thing when I had my 1st generation...it wasn't the original, but the second revision of it. There must be an official weight down to 1/10th of a gram of an unopened sealed original iPod. But where do you find such a weight? I no longer have my iPod so I'm not worried about it...would be good to know though. Get it x-rayed??

I suppose someone could X-ray it, but seeing as how it may be difficult to find someone to do that...a good old-fashioned box-shaking may be in order.

What do you hear for? Upon shaking, I heard something like a cable, CD/papers, and I can feel the heaviness of an iPod, but in any box you cant hear the iPod itself if it's snugly in the foam, so it MUST be in there.

I got it for like $150. Owners didnt know what to ask for it. But nah, what I really need is a new computer. I have a iMac G3 now.
Do batterys die after 6 years even after charging? Anyways, I guess you would worry about that if you intend to use it rather than display it.

I compared the box to other pics of unopened newer models, and it is indeed a unopened package (the sealing lines are arranged in an I shape on one side).

I don't know about that. Those shrink wrap seams are a little suspect. I have done quite a bit of shrink wrapping in my life, and those look like how I did them when I was just learning.:) Is the wrap yellowed and hard feeling? I have notice some old product that I have the shrink wrap is kind of deteriorating. But some wrap film is better then others though.
You should go to a court house with a x-ray machine. I am at the court house quite a bit, and have noticed the x-ray operators have quite a sense of humor and will probably do it for you if they are not busy and you explain yourself with a smile.
By they way, you can get all of the materials needed for a shrink wrap production line for under $50. Not a large scale one, but definitely a working one. Wrap $13, heat gun $9, sealer $25. Thats it.
But, if you bought it from people you trust, I wouldn't worry. :)

Just don't open it. I'm sure it would make a difference on the value.
Get an x-ray if you are that paranoid about an iPod actually being in there.
Lock it in some kind of vault and hold onto it.

Aug 5, 2007, 08:38 PM
The people that sold it to me were local, and did not really know its value, and assumed that I would open the box there, so that should be big proof.
I am NOT going to open it, it probably will kill the resale value and excitement factor.

The wrap is kinda dirty on the lines, but not yellowed. The box looks freakin' clean, but there IS a small dent on one corner of the box.
Will prolly take it to a place where they check with XRays though lol.
Here is another one on the web:

If xrays killed HDs then we would all be out of luck everytime we send them through screening at the airport. Drives are magnetic. Xrays are high frequency light beams.

Every iPod I have ever had has been through many x-rays at airports and courthouses, I wouldn't worry about that. :)
Making the shrink wrap with the "I" seam is very easy, that is the way you make the edges shorter when you wrap large items, it is the common way, so that is really not proof that it is factory wrap.
But I am sure you are fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Congrats on your find. :)

Well... factory shrinkwrap is typically a soft plastic wrap... like your typical food wrap. Often times, non-factory shrinkwrap is done by blow dryer, and with thicker plastic.. so the ends are hard. And the plastic is harder in general. Not always, but often. Let's just put it this way, if the plastic is really hard, it's been opened.

The plastic is really thin and not the thick kind.
I'll get the UPC later, its in my car.
I'm not gonna open it, though!
[EDIT]
OK, got it, It was purchased on Dec 8, 2001 according to Apple's records.
UPC is: 7 18908 38806 8
Part No. is M8513LL/A
Not gonna say S/N for security reasons.
I am pretty sure its original because both the box and wrapper are dented in one corner, if the box was opened the new wrap would be untouched and intact.

Agh, the other post got canned, so here's my offer again:
1st Gen iMac G4, 800MHz. I gave it 512MB RAM (internally, so you can still add the 512MB SO-DIMM if you want) and a newer Superdrive (SL, 4x) a number of years back. I'll include all the original software (including 10.1) and throw in a newer OS (Jaguar or Panther) if you want. I'll have to keep the original HDD (I have too many half-finished projects on there) but I'd be more than happy to replace it with an HDD larger than the original one (60GB).
The computer runs great, I've just been using Garage Band a LOT more intensely lately and need a computer that can do that really well on a regular basis. It still works great for iTunes, surfing the web, Office 2k4, simple games, etc. Its only flaw is that it forgets about disks you leave in the tray if you don't use it for a while. I've never wiped the system totally clean, so starting fresh might fix that, I don't know.
I'd also be willing to negotiate a cash difference if you do not find this offer to be fair.
