Hello, i'm looking for an external hard drive for use with time machine and to keep large files on. i think i'd rather do firewire bc you are able to boot off the drive in case of emergencies.

i'd like to get one of these fairly soon. i'm looking to spend around $100, but you never know what happens when great deals are offered. i'd really only want to buy a brandnew unit, but like i said, if something is a good deal, i'll def think about it.

Check out Buy.com - they have great deals all the time on hard drives.

Right now they have a bunch of 500 GB USB 2 hard drives for sale here (http://www.buy.com/cat/usb_hard_drives/16076.html) all for around $120 with free shipping.

yea i'm always watching buy.com, but i have a USB2.0 enclosure. i could buy a hard drive and pop it in, but i think i'm gonna be using this for movies, time machine, and a os x install partition for the "justincase" scenario. firewire is a must. i'm gonna be time machining a 160GB disk. i'd like to have 10 gigs aside for the os x boot partition. the rest for storage.

so 500GB and Firewire are both very important. plus i've read horrible things about lacie porche drives which are some of the inexpensive drives on the list. *nice link tho* :D

Just about bought one of these the other day at Frys. 500gb, fw and usb, $119.99. The tag in the store said price good through the 14th (today) so it may be back at regular price tomorrow ($159.99 I believe it was) edit - didnt see it before, website says through the 15th. Im still quite sure instore said the 14th though. Go figure. I may order one of these after all. Didnt really consider the timemachine partition until I read your post.

Ive got 2 Acomdata drives, one usb and one fw. Had no problems with them at all.
