Well I got my new car and I am so excited about i decided why not show the one site I'm on the most all day. It's an Acura TL Type S. White Diamond Pearl. If anyone is looking for a good luxury car, 4 door, and speed this is it. Acura and Honda make one hell of a product. Now I gotta say goodbye to the Legend.

Congrats! That's a great looking car. How's the drive?

The legend was great, but was getting old and starting to have some problems. The legend only had 2 disc brakes, an older bose stereo and jumped more when shifting gears. The TLS has a much smoother ride, nice bose stereo, basically better everything all around. And with its 260 HP and VTECH engine it goes about 0-60 in 6 flat, which i plan to work on :). I want to keep the exterior looking luxurious. im not gonna turn this into some rice burning civic, this is an acura. I am just going to put some better parts under the hood like a chipe and a better air intake, maybe some sway bars later on. But for the most part I love it. It also has the Tiptronic sports shift, so i can shift on the fly without a clutch, its fun to do sometimes.

I could never drive one because it lacks one thing--a manual. I just don't see how a company can make a "sports" car and then cripple it with an auto. But it is a good car and should last practically forever since it's a Honda.

since i dont race or anything i never felt the need for a manual. but this sports shift thing is real cool, wont shift up until i do it, same with down, it just doesnt have the clutch. i still love it though.

To each his own! But seriously, you have a really nice car. The TL is known to be of high quality and the type-S models are always impressive. Right now I am still driving my 1989 Ford Probe GT and will drive it until the day she can no longer be kept on the road. There's nothing like shifting your own gears to the sound of a turbo at full spool to get your heart racing.

Man, I have gotten 3 tickets...not fun. Personally, I'd go for either the RSX or the CL type-S since you can get a 6 speed in either and I am more for the coupe styling.

Damn, great car. Congratulations. :)
What I never understood is why cars like the Acura are never really included in sports sedan comparisons. The popular one is obviously the BMW 3 and 5 series, as well as the Nissan 350Z/Infiniti G35, the Cadillac CTS or whatever, and several others, but never the Acura, or Volvo for that matter. Its screwy.
Anyway, I'm relatively young when compared to some of you old geezers ;), and can't imagine being able to afford a car like that right now, but since my parents had a "thing" for Honda when I was young, I have also always had an affinity to the brand. I can't explain the brand loyalty since we haven't owned a Honda since 1994 (when I was 14), and that was an old piece of shyte rusty Civic. The same can be said for Volvo, yet I'll defend the brand to my deathbed. Great cars, IMO; better than magazines rate it. We have never had a single major problem with either of our Volvo's. Never. That's priceless to my parents, who simply don't want the hassle. They're sorta like our "Apple". ;)
That manu-matic thing always sounded cool to me. How exactly does it work? Its an automatic car, and yet it won't shift up unless you tell it to? What if I only wanted to use the straight-up automatic without ever shifting? Can I shift with my foot on/off the gas and brake?
GO ACURA!!!
Powerbook G5
Aug 12, 2003, 06:43 PM
If you notice, all those in the comparisons have manuals whereas the Volvos and Acuras generally don't even give you the option, and the people they target those comparisons for are die-hard drivers who would die in they had to be forced to drive an automatic.

as for the sport shifter, if you look at my center console you can see it. right were D5 is you can move it left into sports shift. Then push up or down accordingly. its really fun. I dont like the CL because its a 2 door and I dont like the RSX because it is cramped small, coupe, and didnt have much power. The RL is real nice, but is much more towards town car so its much more top heavy. I believe the TL Type S is their fastest far other then getting into the NSX. Dont worry macman, now rice for me. I am just going to put performance parts under the hood, nothing on the outside besides Acura's OEM body kit. I have to go get the windows tinted, need to get 20/20 on the windows. nodody will be seeing inside my car.

You must have worked pretty hard for your tickets. Here, in the Orlando area, almost no one ever gets stopped. As far as tinting goes, the Seminole County Sheriff's Department cars' tint is too dark according to the FHP. :D

Gotta love the good 'ol FHP...poster-children of law that they are! Well, in Palm Beach, they have been cracking down hard on everything. I got a $80 ticket for driving through a yellow light...got ticketed $200 something on July 4 in a speed trap where the speed limit jumps from 55 to 40 instantly...and another for $150 a couple of months back for speeding up to pass someone to get into the turn lane. What really stinks is that I got two tickets only weeks after giving a donation to the local police as part of their fund raiser!

Didn't you know? Americans have to have automatics so they can talk on the phone and get things from the back seat while they're driving. They wouldn't want to be interrupted with gear changes. :D

while we're on the topic of 'new' cars, i bought (with the help of my parents) my first car.
it's a 1987 Mecerdes 190E with a 2.3 liter engine. i paid for half (it was used but only had 54,000 miles!), insurance, and gas.
i love it. i plan on taking it to college and using through my first jobs.

we think the owner had several cars and the merc was just a run-about, thus the low number of miles.

As for manual vs. auto...it's all preference. My Matrix XRS is a 6speed manual, but I actually wanted it in auto at first. I'd driven 2 Camrys that were both auto, and got used to the convenience of not having to shift.
It only took me driving it from the dealership to fall back into my love for sport appeal... :D

iJon, it will shift from first to second automatically if you do not shift. (unless they changed it from 02) From 2nd up, if you do not shift it will not. Trust me, my sis has one and my brother in law and I had it out the other day.:D

The first car that I drove was a manual shift. It reminds me of my grandfather teaching me to drive. He owned a 1961 Comet. The lessons were done in his barnyard because it was before I got my permit. It was a fun experience driving in his field. For some reason he wanted me to learn to back, so he had me back around the barn. Somehow I got the transmission stuck in 2nd. My Dad had to assist my grandfather take the car for service. Needless to say he was angry!

The BMW would spank the Acura, though. :) I second the Valentine 1, too. It's a great detector, only, it's around $500...but I suppose if you can afford a BMW, then that shouldn't be hard to come by! I'm still plenty happy with my Ford Probe, though. It's my first car and I cannot get over how much fun a turbo + a 5 speed can be. its because the garage has the TL and the Z3 in it. if we could they would all be in there. One thing i shouldnt have done when i got my new car was this. I joined Acura-TL.com, a nice little fan site. being the nerd I am, i hit the search button and find the mac vs pc thread and posted and now they are tearing me up like crazy. I think im gonna stop posting and just read the car threads like i should. One guy had my back but he slowly disappeared. Everyone on there things mac are a joke for audio and video, who are they kidding. but lots of them are nailing me with the audio stuff, but my coworker who is a computer sound expert said he could nail them back even harder so i dont feel dumb anymore.

i played with it a whole lot today becuase i kept driving back and forth through town and getting quotes for window tinting. man its hard to find someone with enough balls to do illegal tinting, but anyways. it was real fun, but im still trying to get the timing right with the rpm and shifting. my friend who races cares a on a pro track can help me with this.

oh i know it isnt the same, but its as close as i want to get. i was gonna get an rsx, but had to settle for the 5 speed automatic, because the trany was stick. i really wanted the s because of the bose stereo and the 40 extra horses, but mainly because i didnt want to go price out a stereo for my needs. the TL worked much better for me. I wanted to add a CAI to improve performace and give it a throatier voice, but my dad said that is stupid and i have a luxury car and shouldnt do it, so i probably wont.

Don't screw with the exhaust it's the quickest way to screw up the way a closed loop engine management system runs.

No a cold air intake will not affect it at all. In reality an exhaust system if made correctly will not affect it at all either but there are a lot of bad ones out there and it's hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. The reason the exhaust will mess with it is due to multiple reasons. First and foremost if you have a freer flowing exhaust then stock you probably have a cooler exhaust then stock. O2 sensors in the exhaust have to achieve a certain temperature before they begin operating correctly. Anything below that temp and they tell the car that it's still running cold and to run on a different timing and fuel mixture map. The second problem is with a well designed exhaust like you would have with the Acura you can not gain overall power you can merely change the HP curve. By relieving back pressure you will reduce the peak torque and may in turn gain HP but at a higher rpm where it is usually less usable.
hp = (rpm*torque)/5252
So therefore if you reduce the peak torque you will increase the RPM at which the HP peak is attained.

what about the CAI, i dont plan on an exhaust becuase it really doesnt do anything for the tl and i dont want that look anyways. I think ive read with the tl, a CAI will give me a few more horsepower, possibly better gas mileage, and a throatier voice when the engine revs, am i thinking of something else. only thing i would have to worry about it hydrolocking the engine from the CAI, but thats why i would get a bypass valve.

The cold air intake shouldn't hurt a thing and could very likely give you as much as 5hp. It's not due to cold air though. It has to do more with smooth flow of intake air. The more turbulence you have in the intake the less air that can make it into the engine when the valves open.

Just be careful with a cold air intake...in Florida it's not a good thing because getting water into your engine from one of those is a really bad thing.

That's a Ram air intake. A cold air intake usually doesn't or shouldn't be positioned in such a way that air is forced into it. Don't put one on that is positioned close to the road and if it is a forced air intake make sure it has water drains.

We have a garage, would not want to be without one. It keeps the car out of the weather. It's nice in the winter, not to have to scrape.
Currently lease a 2004 Volvo AWD S 60. Nicest car we've had. Got the car by a winning bid at our local PBS auction, WGBH. My wife really enjoys the car since she is a visiting nurse, so it is her office. Not as tired because of the orthopedic seats!

wait wait wait, I thought the CAI is what can lock up your engine, i thought the SRI is what doesnt hydrolock because its so high up in the engine. oh well, i still have much to learn, im just remembering all this form reading the forum until 4 in the morning.

A CAI is typically and aluminum tube with a small bend with a clamp on air filter on the end of it. A RAI is a intake that typically runs to the front of the engine compartment and then down and has the intake opening forward right where a running light might be. This is to get the maximum pressurized airflow. The air pressure is much greater low and in front of the car due to aerodynamics forcing the air down and around the car creating a high pressure pocket.
I would definitely just recommend the CAI if you had to have one of them. Be sure to get one specifically made for your car. Your car could have intake temp sensors in the air box which would need to be moved if you put on a different intake. There are other things it could have also. My '85 MR2 had a Variable Intake System. What this did was change the size the airbox volume at a certain RPM. By having a smaller airbox at lower rpm it created a semi-vacuum that increased low rpm torque. This is because 16v motors actually breath too well at low rpm and can create poor combustion dynamics at low rpms.
I new 7 years of working on BMW motorcycles and lots of schools along with working with a guy that had 20 years in import car repair would come in handy some day.

I new 7 years of working on BMW motorcycles and lots of schools along with working with a guy that had 20 years in import car repair would come in handy some day.
i i priced one out, an Injen for about 200 dollars. that will probably be theo nly mod i do to my car for now, besides replacing the fogs and hi beams with HID's to match to the low beams.
