Friend has an older Apple Cinema Display with the ADC connector.

He wants to use it with a VGA computer (pc of course)

Anyone have one of these horrible things lying around?

the adapter you are looking for is $300+ (made by only a few companies). ie VGA->ADC

the cheap adapter is ADC (on the Mac) to VGA, common, $10 item.

So basically you cant use the ADC on a PC, unless its a DVI output, and then buying the $100 Apple DVI-ADC converter, or equivalent one made by Geffen (I believe).

You need a VGA to ADC converter. There's a big difference... just make sure you don't order the wrong thing. An ADC to VGA converter is cheap, a VGA to ADC is not.

EDIT: beaten by someone who can type faster, which is strange since this thread is an hour old...

Ah the backwards way is far expensive.

Thats what I thought.

So basically, a VGA pc isnt meant to use an ADC monitor?

The naming is [computer port] to [monitor port], so you do need the VGA to ADC-

The cheap ADC to VGA adapter is for Macs with an ADC port, to hook up with a VGA monitor.

If you are using an apple cinema display with a pc you need a very expensive adapter. No matter what.

Trash it or sell it and buy a new 21" Viewsonic for 250 bucks. Less than the adaptor.

I'm an interior designer and for my artistic ridiculous value I must have a very elegant looking WHITE monitor. I figured I'd be good with the apple until I realized an ADC to DVi converter is not what i needed. Is there some sort of PCI slot card with the ADC connection I can install on my dell. It's the 530s I'm excited, BUT I HAVE NO MONITOR AND IT HAS TO BE WHITE.

All you need is a DVI connector on the Dell. If its a Dell tower, then it should be no problem (many many PC cards would fit).

Once you have a DVI, you can purchase the DVI-to ADC converter box (~100 MSRP, not sure what it sells for now, check Ebay, or Geffen)

IS there such thing as...an ADC pci card, either way I screwed up and have the ADC to DVI, if i were to the DVi card whatever, I would still need the DVI to adc adapater.

Congrats! That should give you significantly better results than going VGA (analog) to ADC (digital) anyway.
