widescreen in Quake3?

hi, i have a 1GHz powerbook with 1280x854 resolution. i have scoured the internet search for a way to change Q3 to use that resolution, but i can't find a thing! in the game if i set it to 1152x768 it resets the resolution to 640x480! please tell me that someone knows how to do this!!!

a. Open the game console by pushing the tilde '~' key.
b. Enter the following at the console prompt:
set r_customwidth 1280
set r_customheight 854
set r_mode -1
vid_restart
c. Press the Enter key.
d. Push the tilde '~' key again to close the console.
