I just wanted to start a thread so all Australian's waiting on an iPod touch can discuss shipment status, whether you know of any shops that have some in stock or if anyone has received their iPod touch.

As we all know, Australia always seems to be far behind the US when it comes to certain things (even though the iPod is most probably shipping from China, so really we're closer than they are!).

So please, discuss away..

I live in New Zealand and I'm not gonna bother ordering from Apple. Harvey Normans is advertising 10% off (And Dick Smith 15%) so it works out cheaper from them.

Really? I'm amazed anyone can offer any discount. Maybe the tariff system is different over in NZ?

In Australia, the biggest discount we can get is about $5 off so it's hardly worth it.

As i have said on other threads, I don't think it will ship next week. Apple guy seemed VERY certain about this, something to do with tweaking that needs to be done on Aust/International ipod touches related to wifi, and maybe removal of starbucks feature (?).

So i think they will produce enough USA ones to satisfy initial demand, then move on to international ones - Look at it this way, USA is beta-testing for us! (Hope the concerns about the screen colours are fixed by the time they manufacture ours!!)

My guess is shipping on 24th-25th. I hope its not later than that, my birthday is on the 30th and I'm going to be doing about 7hrs travelling that weekend!

Will post here as soon as my order status changes, or more info becomes avail.

Totally! I actually think there is a good chance that will be the case.

With all the discussion online about the issues, apple will most certainly be upping the ante on quality control. Been a bit sloppy so far, IMO (Diagostic versions being shipped, 8gb model packaged as 16gb model, Lack of continuity with screen & sound quality from one ipod touch to the next)

I'm in full agreement and would prefer the delay if it means they fix the screen issue. Or at least add a contrast control. The default contrast level seems to be set at maximum.

They can take as long as they need as far as I'm concerned - I ordered mine with engraving, so I won't be able to swap it for another if the fix comes in later.

If the screen issue isn't resolved within the next week (or can be fixed by those who already have one), I'm strongly leaning towards cancelling my order before it's too late and re-order when it's fixed.

Yep, me too. March 10 is October 3 (10/3 = 3/10 in the US)

Click on the apple icon on the widget and it takes you to the order status page, that's the best way to know what your staus is

About the wifi and school..I have the same problem. Down here in Melbourne I go to uni, but my uni is all tightas* about the internet connection so I need cisco vpn client and thus can't connect to the wifi. Providing you guys don't have that stuff at school, I'm assuming it should work as long as you have the proxy settings to put in.

Don't hold your breath... who knows when we will get the iPhone. That's the reason why I am getting the touch, I want an iPhone but I don't want to have to unlock it only to have to keep re-hacking it every time theres an update which disables the unlock hack. I don't want to end up with a bricked iPhone, although it is tempting to just get an iphone and give it a go, at worst use it like a touch.

i dont think apple focus only on america, my dad got his nano on the next day after they were released worldwide, quicker than many americans did, also the iphone needs to be certified by different ppl in different countries and networks need to be sorted out. but still apple screwed up on the touch big time. i want mine

We're still waiting for our first proper delivery of the new iPods (whole town, not just our store) - all we got last week were 1 box each of 4GB and 8GB (blue, black and silver) nanos and 1 box of silver 80GB classics (1 box is 5 ipods).

There is no Apple admin office in NZ - Apple Australia handles NZ issues. All orders from Apple stores in NZ are ordered from Apple Australia, rather than being shipped directly to stores from the factory or SE Asia HQ (Singapore).

That's very true. My NZ Apple Store orders (of which there have been many!) always ship from Sydney. Less than 24 hours shipping to get here too! :)

And all I'm saying is - yeah, they may ship from somewhere next week, but it could take Apple a week to receive them because they have to clear customs first. Secondly, they will also have to do all the admin stuff - like put them in inventory databases and allocate them - that could take a week in itself. I just know Apple too well to take a ship date at face value - especially when Apple don't even know how many units they will receive until they get the notice of shipment from the warehouse/factory (and it isn't unusual to get short changed for the first few months)!!

In short - don't get too excited or count all your chickens...or put all your eggs into one basket...etc.

Well, I have fairly good info that NO retailers will have them in Australia until mid-late october......

.....I will be so F*%$*^$ Sh*%^#$ if i walk past dick smiths while i'm waiting for my pre-order to arrive, and there they are on-sale.

I have nothing to support this, but i am sooooooooooo pinning my hopes on them shipping before next monday/tuesday. I want it for the weekend of the 29th/30th.

Yep if you buy from a dealership, it's most likely they got their stock through Renaissance. If you buy from the Apple online store, it comes directly from Apple Australia.

So if you want to support the NZ economy, I'd recommend buying from your local dealer rather than the Apple online store.

It's possible that JB Hi-fi is disliked because of their blitzkreig approach to retailing. Yeh, I've called a ton of stores already... I was trying to decide whether to order it from Apple online, or the retailers, and ended up going the online route. Says it will arrive by the 3rd, so that could be interesting... If the retailers have them on the 28th, I'll most likely cancel with apple and go out and buy one. I'm not really worried if they recognise my voice, although I haven't called the same store twice on the one day, so chances are slim. Oh well... I just want my iTouch.

I very much doubt it. Even the new Nanos and Classics are in short supply in stores until early October (despite being readily available from the Online NZ Apple store). I would expect the iPod Touch to be more scarce again.

It was at the Mt Wellington Harvey Norman in Auckland, Im not sure if it is the only store doing the 15% off, Anyway I called up to see how much the iPod touches were going to be and if they had any specials etc and the guy said they had 15% off if you pre-ordered, so when I went instore to preorder I got 15% off with no problems, I belive this deal is still on, I was told it was valid until the iPods came into stock. Prices are roughly $400 for the 8gb and $500 for the 16gb.

8gb works out to be $409 ish, so that is extremely good. I didn't think there was much markup on Apple products? I know there isn't with (some?) Microsoft products, once I knew someone that worked at Harveys and the best staff discount they could get on a year of XBL was $3 off the $110 price.

I've been thinking about it, but I can't make my mind up. The prototypes from Griffin look good, might consider picking one of them up when they make their way down here. They're not even out in the US yet, so it might be a while. I had a case similar to <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elanconvertibletouch/">this one</a> for my iPod Video 30GB, and it worked very well. The front cover also went back and formed a stand as well, which came in handy a couple of times on the plane. I'm in two minds about whether I really want/need to protect the screen on the iTouch or not... if it's got a glass coating, maybe <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elanformtouch/">this one</a> might be better.

Thank god we're back on track and talking about Australia. For a while there it was all about New Zealand and their 15% discounts. I wonder how they get that? Maybe if you trade in two sheep or something (only kidding, you're alright you New Zealanders).

I ordered mine off the online store, I think it's the easiest and most painless. Annoying thing is, I'm going away on Friday and I have no iPod for the travel. Wish my touch would arrive before then! (don't see it happening for some reason)

The key will be getting the TNT shipping information when it ships.

My recent experience with a week+ delay in getting my Apple Wireless Keyboard is that Apple Australia

a) failed to advise me of the TNT shipping information - yet they got it right for 4 products this year previously. If I had got that email all of the following problems would have been compressed to a 1 day delay - not a 9 day delay.

b) seem to have no idea what was going on when I rang Monday - 2 business days after the KB was due - when I was trying to confirm shipping details

c) said on Monday that they would ring me back and let me know what was going on, but failed to call me. I chased them today (Thursday) and was told that the delivery had been attempted by TNT but failed because I didn't list my business name (we are the only business in the building at the address given AND I have had at least 3 successful deliveries (iLife 08, Airport Expresses) by TNT this year from Apple and no delivery details have been changed.) They say that TNT International is the problem because they need the business name whereas TNT Australia dont... of course ;)

d) whilst polite there was no apology, and the excuse for the delay getting back to me was the Monday person was busy with other wireless keyboard delivery issues - so they still hadn't got back to me after 3 full working days because other peoples orders had been stuffed up?

e) meant to arrive tomorrow (Friday) now that TNT has my business name on the order (not just my full name and telephone extension)

So, if you have ordered a iPod touch you may want to check your delivery details to make sure you dont encounter the same "problem"

Reordered a 16gig tonight hoping that apple would sort the screen issues before they ship units over here.

Well I was bored and curious at the same time, so I called the nice Apple people. It was that or more vacuuming :)

They stuck to the 28 September date, weren't sure whether NZ iPod Touches would ship to customers from Shanghai or Sydney.

It sounded like an iPod might have been "assigned" to my order, but not prepared for shipping - so maybe some Aus / NZ iPods are on the manufacturing line now?

I called apple too and got exactly the same response. :( I'm going away for the long weekend (leaving friday arvo, getting back late monday night) and they told me that if it gets dispatched on the Friday, there's no chance it will be delivered same day. Also, they don't deliver on weekends or public holidays, so the earliest it will be delivered is Tuesday. If it does happen to be dispatched earlier than friday, it may be delivered earlier, but at the moment, the lady said it's the 28th. Week and a half to go! :)

Im Pretty sure they do, i got a custom Mac book Pro (Extra Gig's) and it was shipped directly from Shanghai to my House, (Melbourne) Didn't stop in Sydney

The Apple Lady I spoke to today indicated that they'd be shipping from Sydney. You never know though. I don't really care where it comes from, but it would make sense that they'd get here a couple of days before the 28th, so they can be shipped out ASAP on the day. Then again, maybe they're coming from Singapore on the 28th, then shipping out the following week. Who knows?

Yeah, my widget does the same thing, except sometimes it like to tell me it will ship on March 10 (gets confused by US date format)

Basically i just use it to click on the apple to check my order.

I would more likely say that the unengraved, might already be on there way to Sydney Dispatch, then you will get prepared for shipment then shipped and receive the next day, cause its from sydney.

I would say that the engraved will be shipped directed from OS like all CTO Apple products. So, who know we might all get them at the same time, or the unengraved first OR the engraved first....

You bought it and they said they'd ship it on the 28th and it'd be at your door by the 3rd, so you can't exactly ring up and complain that it hasn't arrived 1 and a half weeks early!

Here you go. Unfortunately the tracking does not come up with anything at this particular time, but I'm guessing that it will be coming from China based on previous experiences with purchasing stuff from Apple online store. I ordered and 8GB, I don't know if the 16GB takes longer to ship.

Actually, in NZ a separate company (Renaissance) handles distribution to resellers. In NZ there is pretty much always a delay in seeing new stock in a lot of stores.

There was a delay of more than a month in seeing any stock of the new iMacs, for example, and I got my 3g nano off the Apple Store a few weeks before any stock was expected in stores. I woulda got my new MBP several weeks to a month ahead of the same deal through somewhere like Harvey Norman ... so there can be quite a difference here.

Besides, isn't this the Australian impatient-people-thread? :D

PA623ZP/A - unlike what I am reading on the net for the US & UK models, I dont know how to interpret this model code to know what week it is. If you have serial number you can read what week it was - and hope its a week 38 or later.

I guess your TNT tracking should specify country movements. Be sure to use the TNT International link on their webpage (front page down the bottom), not just the domestic one, to get real info on its location.
